Topic:Diagnostic Technique

Diagnostic techniques in equine medicine encompass a range of procedures and tools used to identify diseases, injuries, or other health conditions in horses. These techniques include imaging methods such as radiography, ultrasonography, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), as well as laboratory tests like blood work and tissue biopsies. Each diagnostic method provides specific information that can aid in the assessment and management of equine health issues. Radiography is commonly used for evaluating bone structures, while ultrasonography is useful for soft tissue examination. MRI offers detailed images of both soft and hard tissues, though its use is limited by cost and availability. Laboratory tests can detect biochemical and hematological changes indicative of disease. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the development, application, and efficacy of various diagnostic techniques in equine veterinary practice.
Saddle pressure measuring: validity, reliability and power to discriminate between different saddle-fits.
Veterinary journal (London, England : 1997)    July 12, 2005   Volume 172, Issue 2 265-273 doi: 10.1016/j.tvjl.2005.05.009
de Cocq P, van Weeren PR, Back W.Saddle-fit is recognised as an important factor in the pathogenesis of back problems in horses and is empirically being evaluated by pressure measurements in clinical practice, although not much is known about the validity, reliability and usability of these devices in the equine field. This study was conducted to assess critically a pressure measurement system marketed for evaluating saddle fit. Validity was tested by calculating the correlation coefficient between total measured pressure and the weight of 28 different riders. Reliability and discriminative power with respect to different sad...
Equine fetal gender determination from mid- to advanced-gestation by ultrasound.
Theriogenology    July 5, 2005   Volume 64, Issue 3 568-571 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2005.05.013
Bucca S.Equine fetal gender can be easily determined by ultrasound between Days 120 and 210. A combination of transrectal and transabdominal ultrasound examinations can visualise fetal sex organs up to 8 months of gestation. Early equine fetal sexing techniques, performed between approximately Days 58 and 70, are aimed at identifying the position of the genital tubercle. A wider diagnostic window, a diagnosis based on several parameters, and the ease of identification of fully developed fetal primary sex organs make gender diagnosis in mid- to advanced-gestation a preferable technique.
Assessment of feto-placental well-being in the mare from mid-gestation to term: transrectal and transabdominal ultrasonographic features.
Theriogenology    July 5, 2005   Volume 64, Issue 3 542-557 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2005.05.011
Bucca S, Fogarty U, Collins A, Small V.Ultrasound assessment of feto-placental well-being has found its application in the equine field, as a valid diagnostic tool. Most reports on equine fetal parameters focus on advanced to late gestation. The aim of the present study was to further validate the technique of ultrasound evaluation of the equine fetal environment, by extending its application to earlier stages of pregnancy. Fetal parameters were collected (on 150 pregnancies) over a 3-year period. Data included in the study were selected according to the clinical behaviour of the mare, the neonate/fetus and fetal membranes at the t...
Anti-Trichinella antibodies detected in chronically infected horses by IFA and Western blot, but not by ELISA.
Veterinary parasitology    July 5, 2005   Volume 132, Issue 1-2 107-111 doi: 10.1016/j.vetpar.2005.05.037
Sofronic-Milosavljevic Lj, Ilic N, Djordjevic M, Savic M, Gruden-Movsesijan A, Cuperlovic K, Murrell KD.In the Balkan countries, where trichinellosis is a re-emerging zoonosis, it is of great importance to determine Trichinella infection prevalence among the major hosts, including horses. One method for monitoring prevalence is serological surveillance; however, the validity of serological methods in horses is not well understood. The dynamics of anti-Trichinella IgG production and circulating excretory/secretory (ES) antigens were investigated in three horses experimentally-infected with Trichinella spiralis. Horses were slaughtered at 32 week post infection (p.i.). Low worm burdens were found ...
Assessment of a platelet function analyser in horses: reference range and influence of a platelet aggregation inhibitor.
Veterinary journal (London, England : 1997)    July 5, 2005   Volume 170, Issue 1 108-112 doi: 10.1016/j.tvjl.2004.05.013
Segura D, Monreal L, Espada Y, Pastor J, Mayós I, Homedes J.The objective of this study was to assess whether a new human platelet function analyser (the PFA-100) could be used to evaluate platelet function in horses and detect acetylsalicylic acid (ASA)-induced platelet dysfunctions. Citrated blood samples from 40 healthy horses were processed to obtain reference values for closure time (CT) using cartridges with collagen-ADP (CT-ADP) and collagen-epinephrine (CT-EPI) as platelet agonists. In addition, CT-ADP and CT-EPI were also measured before and 24 h after oral ASA administration in another 12 healthy horses. The sensitivity and specificity of the...

Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    July 2, 2005   Volume 226, Issue 12 2035-2002 doi: 10.2460/javma.2005.226.2035
Hewes CA, Schneider RK, Baszler TV, Oaks JL.A 12-year-old American Saddlebred gelding was referred to a veterinary teaching hospital for evaluation of a chronic lameness problem in the right radiocarpal joint. The horse had been treated for osteoarthritis of the right radiocarpal joint with multiple injections of cortisone during the past 3 years. The horse was severely lame on the right forelimb at a trot. Radiography and computed tomography revealed a 3 x 2-cm lytic defect in the distal portion of the radius and periarticular bone proliferation around the right radiocarpal joint. Ultrasonography of the distal portion of the radius rev...
Recombinant NhSAG1 ELISA: a sensitive and specific assay for detecting antibodies against Neospora hughesi in equine serum.
The Journal of parasitology    July 1, 2005   Volume 91, Issue 2 446-452 doi: 10.1645/GE-395R
Hoane JS, Yeargan MR, Stamper S, Saville WJ, Morrow JK, Lindsay DS, Howe DK.Neospora hughesi is a recently identified cause of equine protozoal myeloencephalitis. However, the significance of this parasite is poorly understood. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with a recombinant form of the N. hughesi 29-kDa surface antigen (rNhSAG1) was developed for serodiagnosis of equine N. hughesi infections. Parallel ELISA analysis showed that animals immunized or infected with N. hughesi exhibited greater antibody reactivity with rNhSAG1 than with the Neospora caninum homolog, rNcSAG1. The rNhSAG1 ELISA showed 94.4% sensitivity and 95.0% specificity when compared wi...
Endometritis in the mare: a diagnostic study comparing cultures from swab and biopsy.
Theriogenology    June 28, 2005   Volume 64, Issue 3 510-518 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2005.05.034
Nielsen JM.The objective of this study was to compare results from endometrial culture swabs with results from culturing of endometrial biopsies. The culture results were related to cytological findings (polymorphonuclear; PMN-cells) and histological observations (PMN-cells). Biopsy and swab samples were smeared on the surface of a blood agar petri dish, and examined for growth of bacteria. Cytology samples were obtained from endometrial biopsies, stained and examined under microscopy for the presence of PMN-cells. Endometrial biopsies were examined for the presence of PMN-infiltration of the endometrial...
Post-breeding inflammation and endometrial cytology in mares.
Theriogenology    June 28, 2005   Volume 64, Issue 3 580-588 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2005.05.041
Card C.Endometritis has been reported to be the third most common medical condition of horses. Timely diagnosis and treatment of endometritis in mares increases the chance of pregnancy. Exfoliative endometrial cytology is often used as a clinical tool to evaluate endometrial inflammation through detection of neutrophils. There is a lack of information on the time frame for changes in endometrial cytologic parameters following breeding. The main objectives of this article are to use current information to describe systematic analysis of endometrial cytology using standardized methods for sample collec...
The effects of halothane and isoflurane on cardiovascular function in laterally recumbent horses.
British journal of anaesthesia    June 24, 2005   Volume 95, Issue 3 317-325 doi: 10.1093/bja/aei180
Raisis AL, Blissitt KJ, Henley W, Rogers K, Adams V, Young LE.Experimental studies in adult horses have shown that general anaesthesia maintained with isoflurane is associated with less depression of cardiovascular function compared with halothane anaesthesia. Adverse effects of intermittent positive-pressure ventilation (IPPV) have also been demonstrated. Nevertheless, the haemodynamic effects of these agents and the effects of differing modes of ventilation have not been assessed during clinical anaesthesia in horses undergoing surgery. Methods: The haemodynamic effects of isoflurane or halothane anaesthesia during spontaneous or IPPV were studied non-...

Claes F, Ilgekbayeva GD, Verloo D, Saidouldin TS, Geerts S, Buscher P, Goddeeris BM.In this study, we compared the complement fixation test (CFT), the horse complement fixation test (HCFT) and a card agglutination test for trypanosomosis (CATT/T. evansi) for the diagnosis of equine trypanosomosis in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Cohen's kappa test was used to evaluate the concordance between the three tests. Kappa scores for CFT versus HCFT and CATT are both 0.6165 (95% Confidence Interval CI 0.414--0.819) indicating a "substantial" agreement between CFT and HCFT or CATT, respectively. Kappa for HCFT versus CATT is 0.395 (CI 0.142--0.648) indicating a "fair" agreement between t...
Evaluation of a commercially available human serum amyloid A (SAA) turbidometric immunoassay for determination of equine SAA concentrations.
Veterinary journal (London, England : 1997)    June 13, 2005   Volume 172, Issue 2 315-319 doi: 10.1016/j.tvjl.2005.04.021
Jacobsen S, Kjelgaard-Hansen M, Hagbard Petersen H, Jensen AL.The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether equine serum amyloid A (SAA) concentrations could be measured reliably with a turbidometric immunoassay (TIA) developed for use with human serum. Intra- and inter-assay imprecision were evaluated by multiple measurements on equine serum pools. Assay inaccuracy was determined by linearity under dilution. The assay was subsequently used for measuring SAA concentrations in clinically healthy horses, horses with inflammatory diseases, horses with non-inflammatory diseases, and in horses before and after castration. In pools with low, intermediat...
High prevalence of chlamydial (Chlamydophila psittaci) infection in fetal membranes of aborted equine fetuses.
Veterinary research communications    June 10, 2005   Volume 29 Suppl 1 37-49 doi: 10.1007/s11259-005-0835-1
Szeredi L, Hotzel H, Sachse K.Seventy-seven cases of equine abortion from 49 Hungarian farms that occurred between 1998 and 2000 were investigated for the presence of chlamydiae by immunohistochemistry, PCR and/or MZN staining. Evidence of the presence of these bacteria was obtained in 64 cases (83.1%) from 41 (83.7%) different farms. Partial ompA gene sequencing of PCR products revealed that the agent was Chlamydophila psittaci. Based on the findings of microbial diagnosis, pathology and case history, chlamydial infection was considered to be the most likely cause of abortion in at least 11 (14.3%) cases. In the remaining...
Several recombinant capsid proteins of equine rhinitis a virus show potential as diagnostic antigens.
Clinical and diagnostic laboratory immunology    June 9, 2005   Volume 12, Issue 6 778-785 doi: 10.1128/CDLI.12.6.778-785.2005
Li F, Stevenson RA, Crabb BS, Studdert MJ, Hartley CA.Equine rhinitis A virus (ERAV) is a significant pathogen of horses and is also closely related to Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV). Despite these facts, knowledge of the prevalence and importance of ERAV infections remains limited, largely due to the absence of a simple, robust diagnostic assay. In this study, we compared the antigenicities of recombinant full-length and fragmented ERAV capsid proteins expressed in Escherichia coli by using sera from experimentally infected and naturally exposed horses. We found that, from the range of antigens tested, recombinant proteins encompassing the ...
