Immunity to Streptococcus equi. Using the long chain test, and in some cases the bactericidal test, to measure antibody, the development of the immune response in horses to Str. equi has been followed. Long chain indices in excess of 5.0, accompanied by strong bactericidal capacity, were recorded in serums after the full 3-dose immunisation course with a commercial vaccine. Calf blood extract in treatment of equine foot lesions. A deproteinized calf blood extract (Solcoseryl: Solco Basle, Ltd, Switzerland) enhanced healing of induced and naturally-occurring lesions in the feet of 30 horses and donkeys.
Effects of acetylpromazine on ventilatory variables in the horse. The influence of breathing various concentrations of carbon dioxide and oxygen upon minute volume, tidal volume, and respiratory rate were examined in acetylpromazine-tranquilized horses. Responses in the horses before (control period) and after tranquilization were qualitatively similar to increases in carbon dioxide and to alterations in oxygen. The quantitative responses to these changes were less in tranquilized horses than in the same horses studied in the untranquilized state. Tranquilization had its most prominent effect upon respiratory rate in horses breathing room air.
Babesiosis in the newborn foal. A short account is given of babesiosis (equine biliary fever) caused by the tick-borne protozoan Babesia equi and B. caballi, endemic in the Cape Province of South Africa. The clinical picture, diagnosis and treatment are described. In the absence of any prophylactic measures, prognosis is poor; control of the parasites in the tick-infested areas is essential.
[Production of antirickettsial sera by immunizing horses. II. Obtaining and testing an immune serum to D. sibericus]. The authors present the results of immunization of horses-producers with a commercial antigen and the yolk culture of the living R. sibericus (strain K1) for the purpose of obtaining specific immune sera for many purposes. Some serological reactions to “brucella” antigen in the horse. Seventy-three samples of serum, from 69 horses and one zebra, were subjected to the Rose Bengal Plate, serum tube agglutination, complement fixation, and anti-equine globulin (Coombs') tests for brucellosis. Fifty-one of the samples, from 48 horses, were submitted by practising veterinary surgeons; of these, 22 samples were associated with clinical conditions which might have been due to brucellosis.
