Changes in plasma cortisol concentrations during the ovulatory cycle of the mare. Daily blood samples from four mares were assayed for cortisol through a total of eight ovulatory cycles. Mean cortisol concentrations on days -14, -13, -10, -9 and -8 before ovulation (dioestrus) were greater than on days -5 to -1 (oestrus). The highest mean (+/- S.E.M) value of cortisol occurred on day -10 (260 +/-28 nmol/l) and the lowest on day -2 (142 +/- 14 nmol/l). Evidence that changes in LH pulse frequency may regulate the seasonal modulation of LH secretion in ovariectomized mares. To determine whether tonic LH secretion in ovariectomized mares is characterized by pulsatile release, frequent blood samples (every 15 min) were collected from 5 ovariectomized horse mares in nine 8-h periods between February and May. Mean serum LH concentrations increased 9-fold and were associated with a 4-fold increase in mean LH pulse frequency. These results provide the first evidence of pulsatile LH release in ovariectomized mares and suggest that the increasing daylengths of the spring months may increase serum LH by increasing LH pulse frequency.
Effects of testosterone, dihydrotestosterone and estradiol on gonadotropin release after gonadotropin releasing hormone administration in cyclic mares. Sixteen intact cyclic mares were treated on the fourth day of estrus and then every other day for a total of six injections with 1) testosterone propionate, 2) dihydrotestosterone (DHT) benzoate, 3) estradiol (E2) benzoate or 4) safflower oil. Hormonal changes in the immature rat after administration of pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin: influence of body weight. We have shown previously that pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) induces ovulation only in rats weighing over 60 g on the day of injection. The under-60 g rats do not ovulate although they secrete a preovulatory surge of a pleiomorphic form of LH. Presumably this pleiomorph is inactive. Seasonal and circadian changes of testosterone levels in the peripheral blood plasma of stallions and their relation to semen quality. Three stallions were bled each hour for 25 h at 28-day intervals throughout 1 year. Testosterone levels were pulsatile. Pulse frequency and pulse amplitude were higher in the summer months than at other times (P less than 0.01). Synthesis and properties of equine beta-melanotropin analogs with substitution in residue position 1. Five analogs of equine β-melanotropin have been synthesized by the solid phase method. The NH2-terminal aspartic acid was substituted with amino acids (Gly, Trp, Ile, Lys and Nα-acetyl-Asp) differing widely in physicochemical properties. On the basis of their lipolytic potencies it was concluded that this position plays a negligible role in this activity.

Plasma cortisol variations induced in the stallion by mating. Plasma cortisol variations have been determined by radioimmunoassay in 5 stallions during mating and in 2 teasers during oestrous female exposure. In all the animals, cortisol plasma levels consistently increase (71.1 ng/ml vs 44.0 and 63.0 ng/ml vs 35.1, in the stallions and in the teasers, respectively) 7-30 min after female exposure; 120 min after exposure, cortisol concentrations are again low.
Effects of melatonin and thyrotropin releasing hormone on mares during the nonbreeding season. Acute laminitis-hypertension was produced by carbohydrate overloading of the gastrointestinal tract in 12 adult horses. Effect of stress on steroid hormone levels in racehorses. Cortisol and testosterone were measured by radioimmunoassay in plasma samples from race horses. None of 6 stressed male horses had low cortisol levels but testosterone levels (0.81 +/- 0.15 nmol/l) were significantly lower than in healthy horses (1.86 +/- 0.31 nmol/l). The conclusion was made that adrenocortical insufficiency is not a common association of stress in race horses. The reduction in testosterone levels is probably a nonspecific response similar to that seen in other species.
Isolation and identification of steroids from gonadal vein blood of the fetal horse. Direct connection of the artery of a fetal ovary to the carotid artery of the mare allowed collection of a large volume of blood over a 30-min period.
