Developments in equine nutrition: comparing the beginning and end of this century. In the first part of this century, there was little advancement in horse nutrition and little research was undertaken. However, in the last few years, there has been a great increase in interest in this whole area. This review surveys some of the more recent developments and how they have influenced feeding practices and also compares these with those feeding practices found at the start of this century. The review concentrates on the nutrition of the adult horse in work, exploring in particular what they are fed and how the nutrient value of these feeds is evaluated.

Observations on African horse sickness in Saudi Arabia. The present epidemiological status of African horse sickness in Saudi Arabia, as shown by seroconversion, virus isolation and clinical observation of sentinel horses is described. No African horse sickness virus activity was detected throughout the duration of the study (from November 1992 to March 1995). These findings support previous reports that African horse sickness is not endemic in Saudi Arabia.

Macroscopic ‘degeneration’ of equine superficial digital flexor tendon is accompanied by a change in extracellular matrix composition. Computed tomography of cholesterinic granulomas in the choroid plexus of horses. Cholesterinic granulomas are tumor-like masses in the choroid plexuses of horses. The effect of foot imbalance on point of force application in the horse. Foot imbalance is believed to be a common cause of musculoskeletal injury in the horse; its biomechanical effects are, however, poorly understood. Flat, hurdle and steeple racing: risk factors for musculoskeletal injury. A retrospective case-control study was conducted to identify and quantify risk factors for serious musculoskeletal injury sustained at 4 Australian metropolitan racetracks. During the period of study (August 1988-July 1995) there were 196 cases from flat racing, 52 cases from hurdle racing and 53 cases from steeplechases. Effect of moderate exercise on the severity of clinical signs associated with influenza virus infection in horses. The purpose of this experiment was to determine if exercising horses, infected with influenza virus, exacerbates the severity of clinical disease. Eight horses were trained on a treadmill for 42 days and then challenged with aerosolised influenza A/equine/Kentucky/91 (H3N8). Measurement of serum and synovial fluid keratan sulphate and antibody to collagen type II in equine osteoarthritis. Keratan sulphate (KS) concentration and anticollagen type II antibody levels were measured in the serum and synovial fluid (SF) of clinically normal horses and horses with osteoarthritis (OA). Serologic and molecular characterization of an abortigenic strain of equine arteritis virus isolated from infective frozen semen and an aborted equine fetus. A virus isolated from an aborted equine fetus was determined to be antigenically distinct from several other strains of equine arteritis virus (EAV) by use of a neutralization assay with a large panel of neutralizing monoclonal antibodies.
