Bioavailability of oral penicillins in the horse: a comparison of pivampicillin and amoxicillin. The pharmacokinetics of ampicillin and amoxicillin following intravenous administration at a dose rate of 15 and 10 mg/kg respectively were studied in four healthy adult horses. Increase in plasma progestagen concentrations in the mare after foetal injection with CRH, ACTH or betamethasone in late gestation. Kinetics of healing of grafted and nongrafted wounds on the distal portion of the forelimbs of horses. Full-thickness, circular, cutaneous wounds (5 cm in diameter) were created on the distal portion of the forelimbs of 6 horses. Identification of equine herpesvirus 4 glycoprotein G: a type-specific, secreted glycoprotein. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: Usefulness of clinical signs, bronchoalveolar lavage, and lung biopsy as diagnostic and prognostic aids. We examined 18 horses with clinical signs of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) using physical examination, cytological and bacteriological evaluation of bronchoalveolar fluid, and percutaneous lung biopsy. [A lectin histochemical study of the epidermis off the skin and the hoof of horses]. Carbohydrate moieties of cell membranes in the epidermis of equine skin and hoof were investigated using lectin-histochemistry. The loss of desmosomes during keratinization leads to a reduced lectin affinity. Lectin binding capacity of the intercellular matrix in the stratum corneum of the epidermis is weak compared to that of the intercellular kitt of the hoof. Qualitative differences in lectin binding of the intercellular kitt of different hoof segments correlate with the quality of the horn in the respective areas.

Idiopathic muscular hypertrophy of the equine small intestine: 11 cases (1980-1991). The medical records of 11 horses with idiopathic muscular hypertrophy (MH) of the small intestine were reviewed to determine the clinical and pathological features of the disease. The median age of affected horses was 10.0 years (range 5-18 years). No breed or sex predisposition was apparent. The effects of the intravenous (i.v.) administration of 1.1 mg/kg of flunixin meglumine on thromboxane B2 (TxB2) concentrations were studied in sedentary and 2-year-old horses in training. Arachidonate metabolites in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from horses with and without COPD. Arachidonate metabolites were measured in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) from horses with (N = 4) and without (N = 7) chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Prostaglandin (PG) D2, leukotriene (LT) B4 and LTC4 were present in highest concentrations in BALF from clinically normal horses. Concentrations of PGE2 and PGF were significantly higher in BALF from horses with COPD than in BALF from normal horses, but no differences were detected in thromboxane B2, 6-keto-PGF1 alpha, PGD2, LTB4 or LTC4.
Use of end-tidal CO2 tension to predict arterial CO2 values in isoflurane-anesthetized equine neonates. Freshly harvested equine skin incised with an electrosurgical unit, a radiosurgical device, or a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser was examined by light microscopy to determine the extent of thermal injury caused by each instrument.
