The effect of ivermectin treatment against inhibited early third stage, late third stage and fourth stage larvae and adult stages of the cyathostomes in Shetland ponies and spontaneous expulsion of these helminths. A controlled and critical test on the efficacy of ivermectin against larval and adult stages of the cyathostomes was carried out in six yearling castrated male Shetland ponies. The ponies grazed together as one group from 3 May to 4 October 1990, after which they were housed. Three ponies were treated with ivermectin on 29 October while the others served as controls. Detection of equine immunoglobulin-secreting cells by a plaque assay. A protein A-hemolytic plaque assay was applied to detect immunoglobulin (Ig)-producing cells in horse peripheral blood, using pokeweed mitogen as a B lymphocyte activator. A maximum number of Ig-secreting cells was obtained when horse peripheral blood lymphocytes were cultured in a medium containing horse serum. The effect of tension on perfusion of axial and random pattern flaps in foals. Caudally based axial pattern and random pattern skin flaps, 5 cm x 10 cm, were raised on the abdomens of seven foals. Blood flow was measured 7.5 cm from the flap bases during incremental increases in applied tension. At tensions less than 1400 g, cutaneous blood flow was more than four times higher in axial pattern flaps than in random pattern flaps. Determination of total protein concentration and viscosity of synovial fluid from the tibiotarsal joints of horses. Viscosity of synovial fluid (SF) from 29 clinically normal horses was determined by use of a rotational cone and plate microviscosimeter. Manually assisted ejaculation in a stallion with erectile dysfunction subsequent to paraphimosis. A Thoroughbred stallion with erectile dysfunction following paraphimosis was managed to allow consistent ejaculation. Ejaculation was elicited in this stallion by applying manual stimulation to the base of the penis. This technique allowed consistent ejaculation, and the stallion was able to return to natural service. Historically, stallions with this degree of penile dysfunction have been considered incapable of ejaculation and unable to continue as breeding animals.
[The characteristics of the helminth community in the Turkmen kulan (Equus hemionus)]. The helminth fauna of 24 kulans from Askaniya-Nova and Badkhyz was studied. 42 species of helminths were found, 34 of which belong to strongylids. The helminth species composition of kulan is similar to that of other species of horses. This is a result of an intensive parasite exchange in the historical past when numerous populations of different Equidae species made long seasonal migrations over steppe inter-river lands of Asia and grazed for some time on common pastures.

Inflammatory effects of platelet activating factor (PAF) in equine skin. Intradermal administration of PAF (0.001-1 micrograms/site), but not lyso-PAF (10 micrograms/site), in the horse caused an increase in cutaneous vascular permeability which was maximal by 32 min.
