Genetics in horses encompasses the study of hereditary traits and the genetic makeup that influences various characteristics and health conditions in equine populations. This field involves the analysis of genes and their functions, inheritance patterns, and the impact of genetic variations on traits such as coat color, performance ability, and susceptibility to diseases. Research in equine genetics employs techniques such as genome mapping, sequencing, and genetic testing to identify specific genes and mutations associated with these traits. This page gathers peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the genetic basis of equine traits, the methodologies used in genetic research, and the implications for breeding, health management, and conservation of horse breeds.
Swierstra EE, Gebauer MR, Pickett BW.The cycle of the seminiferous epithelium of the stallion was
divided into eight stages, using as criteria the presence of meiotic divi-
sions, shape of the spermatid nuclei and location of spermatids with
elongated nuclei in the tubule. The mean frequencies ofstages 1 to 8 were
16\m=.\9, 14\m=.\9, 3\m=.\2, 15\m=.\8, 7\m=.\4, 13\m=.\5, 12\m=.\6 and 15\m=.\7%, respectively. The
duration of one cycle of the seminiferous epithelium was 12\m=.\2 days
(S.E.\m=+-\0\m=.\1) as determined by injecting a single dose of 700 \g=m\Ciof
[3H]thymidine into each spermatic artery of six stallions and rem...
Margalit R, Schejter A.The specific binding of cations to horse heart ferrocytochrome c has been studied, using the gel
filtration method. The cations investigated were: Mg2+, Co2+, cinchonine and proflavine. The stability
constants are in the range of 5-8 mM-1, and the number of binding sites per protein molecule are
1 to 2. The temperature dependence of the stability constant for the Mg2+-ferrocytochrome system
was measured. The thermodynamic parameters were found to be: dH&s = 4-12 kcal/mol, dG;,,
(25 "C) = -5.6 kcal/mol and AS&, = +57 calxmol-lx K-I.
Li GP, Seidel GE, Squires EL.Five experiments were designed to study the fertilizability and development of bovine oocytes fertilized by intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) with stallion spermatozoa. Experiment 1 determined the time required for pronuclear formation after ICSI. Equine sperm head decondensation began 3 h after ICSI; 42% were decondensed 6 h after ICSI. Male pronuclei (MPN) began to form 12 h after ICSI. Female pronuclei (FPN), however, formed as early as 6 h after ICSI. In Experiment 2, ionomycin, ionomycin plus 6-dimethylaminopurine (DMAP), and thimerosal were used to activate ICSI ova. None of the IC...
May SA, Hooke RE, Lees P.Equine interleukin-1 has been produced from peripheral blood monocytes by stimulation with E. coli lipopolysaccharide. Sephacryl S200 gel filtration revealed a molecular weight of 17-18 kD. Chromatofocusing of the 17-18 kD peak identified four active fractions. Two major peaks were detected at pH 6.7 and pH 7, with smaller peaks at pH 6.3 and pH 5.9. The pI 7 molecule is probably the equine form of IL-1 beta.
van der Mey GJ, Bos H.The study of the literature on a preliminary performance test for saddle horses (stallions) is concerned with European countries. Interest is found to be increasing in the various countries. Performance of the test in the Netherlands (since 1966) is described and the various criteria of evaluation are discussed in detail. The intensity of selection based on this test is referred to. In 1974, it was 78 per cent in the Netherlands. Part of studies on the relationship between some results of testing are reviewed. The traction test shows a very low coefficient of correlation with the other parts o...
Douglas RH, Del Campo MR, Ginther OJ.On the day of ovulation (Day 0), 20 pony mares were randomly assigned to one of five groups (4 mares/group) which were given intracarotid arterial (ICA) and intraovarian arterial (IOA) injections on Day 7 as follows: 1) vehicle ICA, vehicle IOA (control); 2) .125 mg PGF2α ICA, vehicle IOA; 3) vehicle ICA, .125 mg PGF2α IOA; 4) .250 mg PGF2α ICA, vehicle IOA; or 5) vehicle ICA, .250 mg PGF2α IOA. Peripheral plasma progesterone and LH concentrations were determined for 0 (pretreatment) and .1, .25, .50, .75, 1, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h posttreatment. The intervals (days) from treatment to ...
Espino-Solis GP, Osuna-Quintero J, Possani LD.This work reports the cloning and sequence determination of the horse alpha subunit of the integrin CD11c/CD18, a marker of dendritic cells. A cDNA clone of 4582 base pairs was obtained. It encodes a protein segment of 1086 amino acid residues of the extracellular domain with 10 potential sites of glycosylation, a transmembrane domain of 32 residues and a C-terminal cytoplasmic tail of 24 residues. A phylogenetic analysis of this integrin shows close similarity (83%) with that of Canis familiaris.
Eizema K, van der Wal DE, van den Burg MM, Dingboom EG, Everts ME.An optimal developed musculoskeletal system is vital for the performance of the horse. Previously, we showed that in the m. gluteus medius from adult untrained horses, identical mRNA and protein expression patterns were found in the majority of fibres. However, co-expression of IIa and IId/x myosin heavy chain (MyHC) was substantially more common at the protein than at the mRNA level, suggesting a transcriptionally controlled fine-tuning of these 2 genes. Objective: To analyse the MyHC transcripts and proteins (including the cardiac alpha isoform) in the same muscle during post natal developme...
Graves KT, Eberth JE, Bailey E.Homozygous and compound heterozygous Miniature horses for ACAN alleles D1, D2, D3* and D4 exhibit chondrodysplastic dwarfism (OMIA 001271-9796). In a previous study, the carrier rate for these four alleles, combined, was 26.2%. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether carriers of these dwarfism-causing alleles had a shorter withers height than non-carriers. A total of 245 Miniature horses were tested for these four ACAN alleles and also were measured for withers height. Of these horses, 98 were carriers and 147 were non-carriers. A statistically significant difference of 1.43 inche...
