Prolonged perfusion with a membrane oxygenator in awake ponies. Prolonged extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (PEMO) was performed in 6 adult ponies with the membrane oxygenator in vein-to-artery bypass circuit. A flow rate equal to 46 per cent of control cardiac output was diverted through the PEMO circuit of 10 to 24 hours. Three of the 6 ponies were perfused for at least 20 hours and developed no complications. Symposium on back problems in the horse. (3) Diseases of the horse’s spine-“comparative aspects”. The structural differences in the spine of the horse and man are compared. These, together with the different uses to which the spine is put, explain the different patterns of disease. Impingement of the spinous processes is discussed in detail including surgical treatment. Comments are also made on sacroiliac strain and manipulation of the spine.
Intestinal obstruction in the horse. Physical signs and blood chemistry. Physical signs and blood changes were studied in horses with artificially produced obstructions of the duodenum and the small colon and simulated volvulus of the ileum. Horses with obstruction of the duodenum had the most violent physical signs and the shortest survival time. Blood changes were an initial rise in pH followed by acidosis, hyperkalemia and a decrease in HCO3 minus, Na+ and C1 minus. Obstruction of the small colon resulted in mild physical signs. Surgical repair of cleft palate in the horse. Surgical repair of a cleft palate was carried out in three horses. Mandibular symphisotomy allowed adequate exposure of the defect. The first subject, a young foal died from inhalation pneumonia but the other two made satisfactory recoveries. The problems of closure of the lip and symphysis are discussed.
Symposium on back problems in the horse. Backs-clinical signs. Diseases of the back of horse and man are not comparable owing to the great difference in anatomy and posture. Veterinary surgeons, particularly in the United Kingdom, are often requested to account for a poor performance due to suspected "back trouble" but a complete examination of the horse's back is most difficult and care must be taken first to exclude any limb or foot lesions. Diseases of the bones, nerves and muscles are briefly discussed. Diagnosis must be improved by new radiographic and biochemical tests before the significance of back lesions can be assessed or even treated.
The technique and clinical appication of endometrial biopsy in the mare. The author describes a technique for obtaining endometrail biopsy specimens from mares. the noraml cyclincal histology of the endometrium and anarbitarry classification histology of the endometrium and an arbitarary classification of the histopathology seen in endometrial biopsy speciemens. Previous literature on the subject is cited. Results of endometrial biopsies taken by the author from 134 barren mares, with histories of subfertility are descirbed and classified. The use of the technique and the interpretationof its find ings in relation to reproductive performance is discussed.
Formation of steroids by the pregnant mare. V. Metabolism of 14C-isopentenylpyrophosphate and 3H-dehydroisoandrosterone injected into the fetus. A mixture of 1-14C-isopentenylpyrophosphate and 3H-dehydroisoandrosterone was injected into a horse fetus intramuscularly during laparotomy, after which maternal urine was collected for 4 days. Steroid conjugates in the urine were extracted with Amberlite XAD-2 resin, hydrolysed and separated into phenolic and neutral fractions. From the phenolic fraction estrone, 17alpha-estradiol, equilin and equilenin were isolated. Immunity and the level of neutralization antibodies in foals and mares vaccinated with a modified live-virus rhinopneumonitis vaccine. Foals (farms 1 and 2) and mares (farms 1 and 3) vaccinated with a commercially available rhinopneumonitis vaccine were tested for the level of antibodies and for protection against the natural infection. The serum-neutralization (SN) antibody titers against equine herpesvirus type 1 were 1:8 or less in the majority of foals and 1:16 or higher in about 10%. A description of some of the clinical features of low back pain in the horse has been given and a number of methods for assisting diagnosis considered. As well as a complete clinical examination both at rest and during exercise, a useful diagnostic aid in some chronic cases was the injection of local anaesthetic into the interspinous spaces. Cyclic changes in ionic composition of digesta in the equine intestinal tract. Effects of diet and time after feeding on osmolality and inorganic ion content of gastrointestinal digesta were studied in 24 ponies. Animals, fed either a conventional or a low-protein, high-cellulose diet, were sacrificed 2, 4, 8, or 12 h after a meal. Animals fed the conventional diet showed cyclic variations in the ionic composition and osmolality of digesta with time after feeding. Maintenance of fertility in the horse including artificial insemination. A high fertility rate depends on many different factors and is always related to inheritance and enviorment. The successful feritly control system in the German Thoroughbred breeding industry shows that fertility can be increased by good management and veterinary supervision. The insemination of horses with frozen semen is discussed. Replacement of natural service by A.I. with frozen semen is not generally accepted in horsebreeding, as the conditions are entirely different from cattle breeding. However, there are several ways in which A.I. can be assistance in stud management.
Observations on the T wave of the equine electrocardiogram. The paper describes changes observed in the T wave and T vectorcardiogram in horse after various periods of exercise. Using radiotelemetry and a bipole lead all horses showed negative T waves immediately after exercise. In some of them this was followed by a markedly positive T deflection. Possible reasons for these changes are briefly discussed.
Equine laminitis of alimentary origin: an experimental model. Acute alimentary form of laminitis was uniformly induced in 11 of 12 horses by administration of a starch and wood flour gruel and could be graded by previously established (Obel) and presently defined criteria. An examination of octanol and octanal metabolism to octanoic acid by horse liver alcohol dehydrogenase. The kinetics of the horse liver alcohol dehydrogenase (alcohol: NAD+ oxidoreductase EC 1.1.1.1) catalyzed metabolism of octanol and octanal to octanoic acid have been examined. On incubation of octanol with horse liver alcohol dehydrogenase in the presence of NAD+, NADH as well as octanal and octanoic acid were seen as the initial products. However, on continued incubation, the octanal concentration progressively decreased to where only negligible quantities were present in the incubation after 10 min. [Preliminary studies on the incidence of Filaziae in equidae in the Netherlands (author’s transl)]. Biopsies of the skin of the umbilical area were taken from ninety-nine horses and one donkey, all reared in the Netherlands. The biopsy specimens were examined for the presence of microfilariae by a recovery procedure. Microfilariae were identified in eight horses. These were microfilariae of the species Onchocerca cervicalis in each case.
Species variability in the modification of erythrocyte surface proteins by enzymatic probes. Bovine and equine erythrocytes have been studied by three different surface modification techniques to investigate the accessibility of the surface components to the external medium. Comparative analyses of members of the Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus complex. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic examination of viruses selected from the Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) complex revealed distinct strain to strain differences in profiles of the two virion envelope proteins. The core protein was identical in all viruses tested. We detected five electrophoretic patterns into which the virus strains could be classified and these were designated alpha (alpha), beta (beta), gamma (gamma), delta (delta), and episolon (episolon). Causes of colic and types requiring surgical intervention. The migration of strongyle larvae is the most common or basic underlying cause of colic in the horse. Disease conditions producing symptoms of colic occur in all sections of the intestinal tract and consist of impactions, torsions, herniations and foreign bodies. Dietary carbohydrates, which constitute a most important source of equine nutrition, are digested and absorbed by a series of complex processes principally in the small intestine, beginning with intraluminal starch hydrolysis by the action of pancreatic amylase.
