Gossett KA, French DD.Anion gap [AG = (Na + K) - (Cl + HCO3)] was determined in Quarter Horses: 10 clinically normal foals 0.5 to 3 days, 2 to 3 weeks, and 5 to 7 weeks of age; 10 yearlings; and ten 2-year-olds. Mean AG (+/- 1 SD) were 12.8 +/- 3.3, 15.2 +/- 2.9, 14.0 +/- 1.6, 12.3 +/- 1.8, and 10.4 +/- 1.2 mEq/L, respectively. Insulin tolerance in laminitic ponies. Coffman JR, Colles CM.Sensitivity to insulin was assessed in ponies episodically affected with chronic laminitis by measurement of blood glucose and arterial blood pressure during insulin tolerance tests. In terms of blood glucose values, laminitic ponies were significantly less sensitive to insulin than controls. Conversely, a post-insulin decline in diastolic, systolic and mean blood pressure values was significantly greater in laminitic ponies than in controls.

The results indicated that substantially lower oral glucose tolerance test curves are observed in horses fed a stable diet comprised of oat hay, a commercially prepared complete feed, and oat and alfalfa chaff, when compared with the curves for horses grazing clover and kikuyu pasture. It was concluded that, in utilizing the oral glucose tolerance test to assess small intestinal function in the horse, it may be necessary to consider the dietary history.
