Effect of diet on the oral glucose tolerance test in the horse. The effect of altering the diet during the week preceding the administration of an oral glucose tolerance test was studied in 7 horses. The results indicated that substantially lower oral glucose tolerance test curves are observed in horses fed a stable diet comprised of oat hay, a commercially prepared complete feed, and oat and alfalfa chaff, when compared with the curves for horses grazing clover and kikuyu pasture. It was concluded that, in utilizing the oral glucose tolerance test to assess small intestinal function in the horse, it may be necessary to consider the dietary history.

Bilirubin excretion following feeding or the infusion of glucose in ponies. Bile flow, during feeding and fasting, was studied in three ponies in which catheters, maintained in the bile duct over 1-2 months, drained all bile continuously. During experiments bile was returned to the small intestine, via a second catheter, by means of a small pump which also measured bile flow rates. Acid-base and electrolyte alterations in horses with exertional rhabdomyolysis. In examination of the acid-base and electrolyte status of 7 horses with acute exertional rhabdomyolysis, the most consistent abnormality was hypochloremia. Metabolic acidosis was not evident in any of the horses. Therefore, the use of sodium bicarbonate in treatment of such disorders may not be indicated in all cases.

The metabolism in the erythrocytes of thoroughbred horses in a sequential study from umbilical cord to the 1st month was investigated. 2. Emphasis was put on hemolytic period at which: (a). PFK, GSH-Px and GSH play a significant role. (b). There is a lower glucose consumption determined by a decreased activity in several enzymatic steps. (c). Response of the adrenal cortex to tetracosactrin (ACTH1-24) in the premature and full-term foal. The changes in plasma cortisol concentration in the immediate postnatal period were examined in 3 groups of newborn foals and the response of the adrenal cortex to exogenous ACTH1-24 (tetracosactrin) was tested in 2 of these groups. Uterine prostaglandin F metabolite production in relation to glucose availability in late pregnancy and a possible influence of diet on time of delivery in the mare. The production of uterine PGFM during different dietary states has been investigated in pregnant mares in late gestation. Arterial and uterine venous plasma concentrations of PGFM rose when food was withdrawn for 12-30 h and the V-A difference widened significantly. Effect of excessive exposure to sodium fluoride on composition and crystallinity of equine bone tumors. Sodium fluoride (5 mg/kg of body weight) was fed for 20 months to horses with hereditary multiple exostoses (HME), a skeletal disorder that primarily affects endochondral bones during skeletal development. Muscle fibre composition and glycogen depletion in horses competing in an endurance ride. An investigation into fibre composition and glycogen depletion pattern within the middle gluteal of 16 horses participating in an 80 km endurance ride was carried out. Cardiorespiratory and metabolic responses to treadmill exercise in the horse. The purpose of this study was to measure cardiovascular, respiratory, and metabolic responses to graded treadmill exercise in the horse. A five-stage treadmill test up to 90% of predicted maximal heart rate was administered to five sedentary horses. The highest measured level of exercise produced a sixfold increase in cardiac output and a 41% elevation of stroke volume over standing values. Metabolic abnormalities associated with rupture of the urinary bladder in neonatal foals. Rupture of the urinary bladder was diagnosed in 4 neonatal male foals. Marked hyponatremia, hypochloremia, and hyperkalemia developed in all 4 cases, and the electrolyte abnormalities were considered to be of potential diagnostic value. Blood urea nitrogen concentration was normal or only slightly higher than normal in 3 of 4 cases and therefore was not a reliable diagnostic test.
