Topic:Neutrophils

Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell that play a significant role in the immune system of horses. They are involved in the body's defense mechanisms against infections and are typically one of the first responders to microbial invasion or tissue damage. Neutrophils function by engulfing and destroying pathogens through processes such as phagocytosis and the release of antimicrobial substances. In horses, the number and activity of neutrophils can be indicative of immune status and are often assessed in the context of infectious diseases, inflammation, and other health conditions. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the function, regulation, and clinical implications of neutrophils in equine health.

Döhle bodies in neutrophils of a horse.
Acta veterinaria Scandinavica    January 1, 1967   Volume 8, Issue 3 211-216 doi: 10.1186/BF03547827
Friis NF, Bech J.Döhle bodies were observed in a horse suffering from a chronic pleurisy. The bodies were demonstrated in about 80 % of the neutro-phils in blood smears prepared during an acute flare-up of the disease. One to 4 bodies were found in each cell, situated in the periphery of the cytoplasm. The size of the bodies was 1–3 μ and the shape rodlike or oval. They stained blue with M-G-G. Blood smears were examined from 50 horses suffering from various diseases, but Döhle bodies could not be demonstrated in any of these cases. Döhle-Körperchen wurden bei einem Pferd mit chronischer Pleuritis beoba...

The Japanese journal of veterinary research    June 1, 1966   Volume 14, Issue 1 71-78
Sonoda M, Kobayashi K.Recently, in the field of the human hematology, electron microscopic methods have been becoming more and more important as one of the most useful methods for differentiating the blood cells in the states of health and various diseases, and several research publications have been pres en ted. On the other hand, in the field of veterinary hematology, some reports on the blood cells of several domestic animals using electron microscopy have been presented, but in these publications 1,3.5,7,9,13.17,19), only a few of the blood cells were described and there is no systematic observation usin...
