Horse erythrocyte gangliosides: preparation of the major hematoside NeuNG1-Lac-Cer. A simple method for the isolation of hematoside NeuNG1-Lac-Cer from horse erythrocytes is described. An aliquot of the crude ganglioside fraction was labeled by tritiated sodium borohydride after mild periodate oxidation. The compounds obtained were used as radioactive tracers in column chromatography. Gangliosides were applied onto a silicic acid column and eluted stepwise by solvents of steadily increasing polarity. The major ganglioside, NeuNG1-Lac-Cer, was eluted in a high yield by the solvent mixture chloroform/methanol/water (60:35:8, v/v/v).

Equestrian cold panniculitis in women. We describe four patients with panniculitis attributable to a combination of cold exposure and equestrian activities. All were young, healthy women who rode horses for at least two consecutive hours per day throughout the winter. Initially, several small, erythematosus, pruritic papules appeared on the superior-lateral portions of one or both thighs. The lungs of two half-bred geldings were fixed in situ by instillation of a glutaraldehyde solution into the airways during deep anaesthesia. Response of plasma LH and FSH to gonadotropin-releasing hormone in pony foals and ovariectomized pony mares. Plasma FSH and LH response to a synthetic GnRH analog was measured in adult ovariectomized pony mares (OVX) and in pony foals (<70 days of age) during late spring (May-June). Comparison of muscle fiber types from 2-year-old fillies of the Belgian, Standardbred, Thoroughbred, Quarter horse and Welsh breeds. The percentages of three muscle fiber types in the biceps femoris and triceps brachii were determined in five breeds of horses: Belgians, Standardbreds, Thoroughbreds, Quarter Horses and Welsh ponies. Influence of exercise on serum selenium and peroxide reduction system of racing Standardbreds. Blood samples were obtained from 45 racing Standardbred horses immediately before and immediately after a training jog at a commercial race track to establish reference values for serum selenium and related values of the peroxide reduction system of racing horses. Effects of furosemide on cardiovascular function and performance when given prior to simulated races: a double-blind study. Collection of semen from stallions at stud. Semen was collected from 222 stallions of 13 breed or colour types in southern Queensland and northern New South Wales. Limitations in equine fetal electrocardiography. Technical and interpretive limitations of equine fetal electrocardiography were evaluated in recordings obtained from 45 pregnant mares. Alterations in plasma corticosteroids, insulin and selected metabolites in horses used in endurance rides. The effects of prolonged exercise on plasma concentrations of corticosteroids, insulin, glucose, lactate and beta-hydroxybutrate were studied in a group of horses competing in a 160 km endurance ride. [The effect of the age of stallions and mares on their fertility]. The study was based on the documentation of the Napajedla Stud Farm of the English Thoroughbred horse for 1888-1972. Electromagnetic measurements of metacarpal blood flow in nonanesthetized horses. Electrocardiography and haematology of horses competing in a three-day event. The electrocardiograms of 22 horses competing in a 3-day event were recorded before and after the event. Uptake of nucleotides and catecholamines by chromaffin granules from pig and horse adrenal medulla. The uptake of nucleotides and catecholamines into chromaffin granules from adrenals of pigs and horses is similar to that previously seen in bovine chromaffin granules.
