Sexual behavior in horses encompasses a range of physiological and behavioral actions associated with reproduction and mating. This behavior is influenced by hormonal changes, environmental factors, and social interactions within equine groups. Key aspects include courtship, mating rituals, and the roles of both stallions and mares during the breeding process. Understanding sexual behavior in horses is essential for effective breeding management and welfare practices. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the mechanisms, influences, and implications of sexual behavior in equine species.
Melo MI, Sereno JR, Henry M, Cassali GD.Pantaneiro horses are a breed native to flood plains of Brazil, where they thrive with little human interference. The aims of this study were to characterize age-associated changes in testicular size, serum testosterone and sexual behavior and to determine age at puberty as well as to evaluate daily sperm production in the Pantaneiro stallion. After weaning the males were kept in bachelor groups away from the females, in a separated area in the natural environment of flood plains. Infantile period ended at approximately 14.4 m.o. of age. Sexual interest and breeding capability first appeared b...

Braun J, Muto Y, Sato K, Schallenberger E.Semen from three stallions was collected weekly for six months (December through May) to determine semen parameters and hormones (testosterone and estradiol-17 beta) in seminal plasma. Once a month three ejaculates were collected at intervals of one hour and examined accordingly. Testosterone and estradiol-17 beta were also determined in peripheral blood plasma (V. jugularis) collected twice a week. Semen parameters (volume, gel-free volume and sperm concentration) were clearly influenced by season. The testosterone concentration in peripheral blood plasma was lowest during December whereas in...
Thomson CH, Thompson DL, Kincaid LA, Nadal MR.To test the hypothesis that prolactin mediates the increase in seminal volumes induced by sexual stimulation in stallions, semen was collected from six stallions every other day for 26 d. The last eight collection days were treatment days. For each stallion, four treatments were randomly assigned to the first four of the eight treatment collection days, and then repeated in reverse order on the last four collection days; 1) CONTROL: semen collected per normal procedures; 2) Sexually stimulated: stallions were presented to mares in a chute for 10 min before collection; 3) Bromocriptine (dopamin...
Pearson RA, Ouassat M.The age, sex, liveweight and body measurements (heart girth, umbilical girth, height, length from elbow to tuber ischii and circumference of the foreleg cannon bone) of 516 donkeys used to transport goods in Morocco were recorded. There were few donkeys over 12 years of age. For adult donkeys weighing from 74 to 252 kg, the best equation with only one variable for predicting liveweight was: liveweight (kg) = heart girth (cm)2.65/2188. The inclusion of two variables improved the prediction marginally, but the addition of further variables gave little further improvement. The best prediction equ...
McDonnell SM, Odian MJ.This study is a part of our ongoing work toward developing pharmacological methods for enhancing and inducing ejaculation in stallions with ejaculatory dysfunction. We evaluated a combination treatment of imipramine hydrochloride followed 10 minutes later by xylazine hydrochloride for the induction of ex copula ejaculation. Eight pony stallions each underwent 6 treatment trials conducted at 4-day intervals. The trials were conducted in the animals' stalls, where they were observed for 90 minutes following treatment. To evaluate the effect of pretreatment sexual stimulation on the rate of ejacu...

Thompson DL, Rahmanian MS, DePew CL, Burleigh DW, DeSouza CJ, Colborn DR.Short-term patterns of growth hormone (GH) secretion and factors affecting it were studied in mares and stallions. In Exp. 1, hourly blood samples were collected from three mares and three stallions in summer and winter. Although GH concentrations varied in a pulsatile manner in all horses, there was no effect of sex or season (P greater than .1) on plasma GH concentrations and no indication of a diurnal pattern of GH secretion. In Exp. 2, 10-min blood samples were drawn for 8 h from 12 mares; after 6 h, porcine GH-releasing hormone (GHRH) was administered i.v. at 0, 45, 90, or 180 micrograms/...
McDonnell SM.This article includes a brief description of the reproductive patterns and specific behaviors comprising courtship and copulation in equids. The author then focuses on breeding behavior of the domestic stallion. Descriptions of normal breeding behavior under a variety of domestic management systems, comments on sexual behavior of donkeys and exotic equids, and the most common types and treatments of sexual behavior dysfunction are included.
McDonnell SM, Love CC, Martin BB, Reef VB, Kenney RM.Two mature breeding stallions were evaluated because of specific ejaculatory dysfunction, and each was found to have aortic-iliac thrombosis occluding 60 to 70% of the aortic lumen. In each case, the stallion had strong libido, normal mounting, and vigorous initial thrusting. With continued exertion, thrusting became weak and dismount was awkward. Treatment aimed at maximizing sexual arousal before mounting and reducing hind limb pain and exertion during breeding allowed these stallions to continue breeding. A program of gradually increasing daily exercise also was associated with improved bre...
Colborn DR, Thompson DL, Roth TL, Capehart JS, White KL.Sexual stimulation induces rapid secretion of cortisol and prolactin (PRL) in stallions. Experiment 1 was designated to determine whether stallions associated location and(or) procedure with previous sexual stimulation in that location. After a control period on d 1, four stallions were exposed to an estrous mare for 5 min on d 2. On d 3, 4, 5, and 6, the same procedure was followed with no mare present. Concentrations of PRL and cortisol increased (P less than .05) after mare exposure on d 2 but did not vary (P greater than .05) on d 1, 3, 4, 5, or 6. In Exp. 2, six stallions were used to det...
Irvine CH, Alexander SL.In an experiment conducted late in the physiological breeding season, 5 stallions were fitted with indwelling pituitary venous cannulae that permitted unobtrusive collection of blood coming from the pituitary and the hypothalamo-hypophyseal portal vessels. The next day, blood samples were collected at 5 min intervals for several hours while the stallions were resting. Pulses of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) occurred approximately once per hour. After this, an oestrous mare was brought into contact with each stallion for ...
Henry M, McDonnell SM, Lodi LD, Gastal EL.The mating behaviour of 2 jacks, each with 21 non-pregnant jennies, was studied when the jennies were in natural oestrus and simultaneously induced oestrus. The main observations were: efficient pasture breeding at natural and induced oestrus, a territorial sociosexual structure, prolonged pre-copulatory interaction, gradual increase of mating activity up to 2 days before ovulation, a copulatory sequence similar to that of horses, vocalization of the jack as a conspicuous behaviour initiating pre-copulatory interaction, frequent heterotypical behaviour of jennies and active involvement of jenn...
Weber JA, Geary RT, Woods GL.Ultrasonographic images of the accessory sex glands of 8 stallions were recorded immediately prior to sexual preparation, immediately after sexual preparation, and immediately after ejaculation. Relative size changes, determined by measurements of ultrasonograms of accessory sex gland, were contrasted. Length and width of the bulbourethral glands increased significantly (P less than 0.05) after sexual preparation and decreased significantly (P less than 0.05) after ejaculation. The increase in bulbourethral gland volume following sexual preparation was correlated significantly (P less than 0.0...
Rabb MH, Thompson DL, Barry BE, Colborn DR, Garza F, Hehnke KE.Six lighthorse stallions with previous sexual experience were used to determine the short-term effects of sexual stimulation (SS; 5 min exposure to an estrous mare), SS plus ejaculation (SSE), and no stimulation (control) on serum concentrations of LH, FSH, testosterone, cortisol and prolactin. Stallions received one treatment per day on d 1, 4 and 7. Treatments were assigned such that each stallion 1) received each treatment once and 2) experienced a unique sequence of treatments. Neither SS nor SSE had any consistent effects on LH or FSH concentrations. Testosterone concentrations during con...
McDonnell SM, Diehl NK, Garcia MC, Kenney RM.Twelve pony geldings with (n = 6) and without (n = 6) testosterone replacement (200 micrograms/kg testosterone propionate in oil, SC every 48 hours) received either gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH; 25 micrograms SC every 3 hours) or control treatment. Sexual behavior was recorded during 4-minute exposure to an estrous mare, 3 times weekly for 2 weeks before treatment, 3 weeks during treatment, and 3 weeks after treatment had been discontinued. The group receiving testosterone and GnRH (n = 3) exhibited significantly greater flehmen response frequency and attention duration and significant...
Clay CM, Squires EL, Amann RP, Pickett BW.To investigate the influence of daylength on the seasonal reproductive cycle of stallions, 21 stallions were assigned to one of three treatments: control, ambient (natural) photoperiod; S-L, 8 h light and 16 h dark (8:16) for 20 wk beginning July 16, 1982 then 16:8 from December 2, 1982 until March 5, 1984; S-S, 8:16 from July 16, 1982 until March 1984. Temperature was not controlled and was similar for all groups. Total scrotal width (TSW) was measured every 4 wk throughout the experiment. During 10 periods, semen was collected and evaluated every other day for 3 wk and sexual behavior was as...
McDonnell SM, Garcia MC, Kenney RM.Series of experiments and clinical trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of psychoneurotropic agents on sexual behaviour of stallions. The benzodiazepine derivative, diazepam (Valium), effectively reversed experimentally suppressed precopulatory arousal and response. Diazepam treatment also blocked the negative effect of novel environment on sexual response. The dibenzazepines imipramine and clomipramine induced erection, masturbation, and ejaculation in the absence of a sexual stimulus.
Magistrini M, Chanteloube P, Palmer E.In an attempt to define optimal season and ejaculation frequency for frozen semen, semen was collected from 6 stallions (3 horses and 3 ponies) 3 times per week or every day, alternating every week, for 1 year. The semen was evaluated and frozen. All the samples were thawed at the end of the experiment. At collection, fresh semen evaluations showed that winter (as opposed to spring and summer) was associated with low sexual behaviour, small volumes of spermatozoa and gel, high sperm concentration and lower motility. The high ejaculation frequency yielded a decreased volume, concentration of sp...
Asa CS.Behavior during the estrous phase of the ovulatory cycle of the mare is analogous in most ways to that of estrous females of other species. Proceptive behaviors bring the mare into the proximity of the male and attract his attention. Positioning facilitates mounting, intromission, and ejaculation. Estrous signs appear to be more intense in the few days prior to ovulation than during the transition periods that separate the recurring estrous and diestrous phases. Sexual behavior is absent during diestrus. Detection of estrus in mares is problematic in that it requires the presence (or at least ...
Dinger JE, Noiles EE.Eight sexually inexperienced, 2-yr-old Morgan stallions were used in a consecutive two-phase design with two groups of four stallions each. Each phase lasted 16 wk, with semen collections every 14 d. Libido scores were assigned to stallions during each semen collection. Scores ranged from zero to four, with zero indicating minimum and four representing maximum libido. In Phase 1, four stallions received daily forced exercise for 16 wk, and the remaining four stallions were confined to box stalls. In Phase 2, the previously exercised stallions were confined to box stalls, and the non-exercised ...
McDonnell SM, Kenney RM, Meckley PE, Garcia MC.Pony stallions were given sexual behavior trials in experimental "home" and "novel" environments, similar in all major features except location. In the novel environment, erection latency was increased and erection time decreased. Treatment with an anxiolytic benzodiazepine derivative (diazepam) appeared to block these effects.
McDonnell SM, Kenney RM, Meckley PE, Garcia MC.Sexual behavior dysfunction unaccompanied by detectable physical or endocrine abnormality is an important cause of reproductive failure among domestic stallions. Several authors have suggested that such dysfunction may be psychogenic, related to negative experience associated with intense handling and training. An experimental model of experience-related dysfunction was developed by exposing pony stallions to erection-contingent aversive conditioning. This resulted in rapid, specific suppression of sexual arousal and response similar to spontaneously occurring dysfunction. Subsequently, treatm...
Line SW, Hart BL, Sanders L.Males horses castrated prepubertally occasionally display stallion-like sexual and aggressive behavior as adults. A retrospective survey of 140 horse owners was undertaken to compare the effectiveness of prepubertal versus postpubertal castration on objectionable sexual and aggressive behavior. Of 94 geldings that had been castrated prepubertally (before 2 years of age), 20% to 30% displayed stallion-like sexual behavior and aggression toward horses, and 5% were aggressive toward people in a stallion-like manner. This occurrence of problem behavior was not significantly different from the occu...
Withrow JM, Sargent GF, Scheffrahn NS, Kesler DJ.Two pony mares were administered 150 mg of testosterone propionate every other day for 20 days (ten injections) and every ten days there-after. An additional two mares and one stallion were not treated and served as controls. Testosterone propionate was dissolved in absolute ethanol and administered subcutaneously. Sex behavior tests were conducted 26 and 40 days after the first injection. Control mares exhibited very little male sex behavior. Both testosterone propionatetreated mares, however, exhibited mounting, sniffing, flehmen, biting and vocalization behavior in the presence of an estrou...
Nicoletti PL, Mahler JR, Scarratt WK.Horses at a veterinary teaching hospital and a slaughterhouse were surveyed for antibodies to Brucella abortus, B canis and Actinobacillus equuli. Four of the 141 hospitalised horses and none of the 73 slaughtered horses had titres of 1:100 or greater to B abortus. Six horses of both populations reacted to the card test. One was culture positive. A card test using B canis antigen was positive in 38 per cent of the sera from hospitalised horses and all of the slaughtered horses. Twenty (27.4 per cent) of the latter group had high tires in a tube agglutination test. High titres could not be redu...
Tischner M.In the first experiment the response of 93 adult stallions to stimulated and natural sexual stimuli was observed just before and 2 weeks after the breeding season (December and July respectively). About 72% of the stallions reacted the same before and after the breeding season (P less than 0.01) while 9% behaved similarly and 19% differently. Also, 72% of the stallions reacted with sexual arousal (mounting) to one of 3 successive simulated sexual stimuli; 25% to a dummy, an additional 44% to a gentle stallion and another 3% to a dummy smeared with mucus and urine from a mare in oestrus. In ano...
Turner JW, Kirkpatrick JF.This field study of feral stallions in Montana and Idaho examines and correlates the seasonal pattern of plasma androgens and specific sociosexual behaviour and reports the effect of a long-acting androgenic steroid on this behaviour and on fertility. Plasma testosterone was measured by competitive protein binding assay in samples obtained by jugular venepuncture from captured animals. In samples taken from 34 sexually mature stallions in 6 different months during the year, a definite seasonal pattern in testosterone was present, with a peak in May (3.04 +/- 0.63 ng/ml) and a nadir in December...
Burns PJ, Kumaresan P, Douglas RH.An experiment was conducted to measure plasma oxytocin concentrations at 4 different stages of the estrous cycle in 11 pony mares. Plasma oxytocin concentrations (muU/ml +/- SE) were found to be higher (P<.01) on day 2 of estrous (39.8 +/- 12.5) and day 5 post-ovulation (33.1 +/- 12.0) than on day 10 (2.3 +/- 1.6) and day 15 post-ovulation (6.8 +/- 4.1). A second experiment was conducted to measure jugular plasma oxytocin concentrations before and after sexual arousal in six pony stallions. Oxytocin concentrations (muU/ml +/- SE) were higher (P<0.06) after sexual arousal (50.5 +/- 8.9) than be...
Amann RP, Thompson DL, Squires EL, Pickett BW.Extragonadal reserves totalled 89 X 10(9) spermatozoa for 5--16-year-old sexually rested stallions and 60 X 10(9) for 2--4-year-olds. Regardless of age, the cauda epididymidis contained 62% of the total reserves and the vas deferens, including the ampulla, contained 7% of the total reserves of spermatozoa. The caput plus corpus epididymidis from 5--16-year-old stallions (N = 41) contained 14.9 X 10(9) spermatozoa per side as compared (P less than 0.01) to 8.5 X 10(9) for 2--4-year olds (N = 30). Frequency of ejaculation did not influence the number of spermatozoa found in caput plus corpus epi...

Thompson DL, Pickett BW, Berndtson WE, Voss JL, Mett TM.Stallions were subjected to a gradually increasing photoperiod beginning on October 15, 1973. The maximum artificial daylength (16 hr) was imposed on February 8, 1974, and maintained until October 6, 1974. Two ejaculates were collected from each of five treated and four control stallions weekly, with an interval of 24 hr between die paired ejaculates on the first and alternate weeks, and an interval of 1 hr on the second and alternate weeks. During summer, stallions subjected to the artificial photoperiod produced less (P<.05) gel-free semen and gel per ejaculate and had more (P<.05) spermatoz...

McDonnell SM, Hinze AL.Periodic spontaneous erection and penile movements known as masturbation (SEAM) occur normally at approximately 90 min intervals in awake equids. SEAM in horses has traditionally been misunderstood by many horsemen as aberrant behavior that should be eliminated. Accordingly, it is not uncommon for trainers of performance stallions or managers of breeding stallions to punish SEAM in an attempt to eliminate the behavior. Previous clinical observations and preliminary unsystematic trials had suggested that attempts to stop stallion SEAM may lead to an increase rather than a decrease in SEAM, and ...
Nagy P, Huszenicza G, Juhász J, Kulcsár M, Solti L, Reiczigel J, Abaváry K.Management of the postpartum period is one of the most important factors of stud farm medicine. In horses, owing to the long gestation period, the time from parturition to repeat conception needs be short to maintain an optimal yearly foaling interval. For this reason the features of postpartum ovarian activity and sexual behavior were studied under farm conditions. During 2 consecutive breeding seasons, 107 mares on 5 commercial horse farms were monitored after parturition by regular teasing, transrectal ultrasonography and blood sampling for progesterone. Foalings took place from January 1 t...

Sieme H, Troedsson MH, Weinrich S, Klug E.Twelve fertile stallions were divided into two groups, either receiving gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) (n = 6) or Placebo (n = 6). Based on the history of frozen/thawed semen characteristics three stallions within each group were assigned as being "good freezers" [GnRH (+); Placebo (+)] and three stallions were assigned as being "poor freezers" [GnRH (-); Placebo (-)]. The study was performed as a "blinded" investigation and stallions were treated twice daily by an intramuscular injection of 1 ml GnRH (Buserelin), 50 microg) or Placebo. The experiment was divided into three time periods...
Argo CM, Turnbull EB.Spherical (35 mm diameter) glass intra-uterine devices (IUDs) are commonly understood to modify sexual behaviour in performance mares. The effect of IUDs on the endocrinology (luteinising hormone, oestradiol, progesterone, testosterone), ovarian and uterine function, sexual and social behaviours associated with the ovarian cycle were evaluated during the natural breeding season in nine, nuliparous pony mares (4.6±0.5 years old, 230±12 kg bodyweight). Age and weight-matched groups were allocated to sham-treatment (n=5) or IUD-implantation (n=4) groups. Fifty complete ovarian cycles were evalu...
Villani M, Cairoli F, Kindahl H, Galeati G, Faustini M, Carluccio A, Veronesi MC.Very little information is available regarding the physiological mechanisms involved in the normal sexual activity in the stallion and, in particular, the endocrine control of reproduction is still not clearly understood. This experiment was designed to determine the short-term effect of sexual stimulation on plasma concentrations of testosterone, cortisol, oestrone sulphate and 15-ketodihydro-PGF(2alpha) in stallions. Semen samples were collected from 10 lighthorse stallions of proven fertility using a Missouri model artificial vagina. At the same time, blood samples were collected from the j...

The treated group received trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and pyrimethamine for 90 days during summer and fall; the control group was not treated. Semen characteristics, sexual behavior, testicular volume, and sperm produc...
Magalhaes HB, Canisso IF.This study aimed to establish normal ranges and determine variables affecting the duration of gestation, placental and fetal eyeball measurements in donkeys. Jennies (n = 121) were submitted to transrectal ultrasonography at 15-day-intervals from 120 days of gestation until parturition. During each examination, variables assessed included: the combined thickness of uterus and placenta (CTUP), fetal eyeball diameter, amniotic membrane thickness, allantoic and amniotic fluids echogenicity, and chorioallantois edema. Parametric data were analyzed with t-test, linear regression, mixed models, AN...
Grillaert K.Erection and masturbation in horses are considered unwanted behaviors in training contexts, despite recognition that these are naturally occurring behaviors that are integral to the welfare of male horses. Equestrians, especially those who use positive reinforcement in their training, expressed concern that the presence of such behaviors might be associated with aggressive or sexual behaviors aimed at humans participating in horse-human interactions. The implications of such attitudes could negatively affect male horses by excluding them from welfare-friendly training systems. In this study, f...
