Resection of a cervical tracheal bronchus in a foal. A 3-day-old Thoroughbred foal developed a large, air-distended, midcervical swelling that was diagnosed as a congenital tracheal bronchus with associated ectopic lung tissue. Clinical signs consisted of a compressible air-filled sac that enveloped the trachea. The nature and extent of the defect were evaluated endoscopically and radiographically. Surgical resection of the bronchus and associated air-filled sac resulted in a functionally and cosmetically acceptable outcome.
Components of electrogenic transport in unstimulated equine tracheal epithelium. Basic components of unstimulated electrolyte transport across equine tracheal mucosa were characterized. Upper respiratory obstruction in foals, weanlings, and yearlings. Upper airway obstruction may result from nasal, pharyngeal, or tracheal diseases. In the young horse, a relatively severe obstruction usually is present before clinical signs are evident. This article reviews the clinical manifestations, diagnostic features, treatment, and outcome of commonly encountered conditions of the nasal passages, pharynx, larynx, and trachea in young horses.

Modulation of equine tracheal smooth muscle contractility by epithelial-derived and cyclooxygenase metabolites. The role of epithelium in the modulation of contractile responses to electrical field stimulation (EFS), acetylcholine (ACh), and KCl were studied in vitro in strips of equine tracheal smooth muscle (TSM). EFS with 0.5 ms pulses of voltage (70 V) resulted in frequency dependent contractions of equine TSM that were sensitive to tetrodotoxin (TTX) and atropine. Use of a protected catheter brush for culture of the lower respiratory tract in horses with small airway disease. A protected catheter brush introduced by fiberoptic bronchoscopy was used to sample the tracheai and bronchial mucosa in 28 horses with small airway disease. Tracheal and bronchial brushings were examined for the presence of fungi, aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, and a cytoiogical evaluation was also done on fluid collected by the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) technique. In vitro responses of airway smooth muscle from horses with recurrent airway obstruction. The in vitro contractile and relaxant responses of tracheal smooth muscle strips (TSM) and third-generation bronchi (3B) of control horses and horses with recurrent obstructive disease (heaves) were compared. Mechanisms of sodium and chloride transport across equine tracheal epithelium. Equine tracheal epithelium, stripped of serosal muscle, mounted in Ussing chambers, and bathed in plasmalike Ringer solution generates a serosa-positive transepithelial potential of 10-22 mV and a short-circuit current (Isc) of 70-200 microA/cm2. Mucosal amiloride (10 microM) causes a 40-60% decrease in Isc and inhibits the net transepithelial Na flux by 95%. Substitution of Cl with gluconate resulted in a 30% decrease in basal Isc. A tracheoscopic technique for obtaining uncontaminated lower airway secretions for bacterial culture in the horse. Transtracheal aspirate (TTA) aerobic microbiology culture results from 30 ponies were compared to protected catheter brush (PCB) culture results obtained from the same ponies. Influence of head posture on the respiratory tract of healthy horses. Twenty four normal, confined mares were unable to lower their heads for 24 or 48 h. In 21 mares this resulted in increases in the proportion of neutrophils and/or numbers of bacteria in transtracheal aspirates. Surgical repair of ruptured trachea in a horse. An Arabian mare was referred with traumatically induced complete transection of the trachea. A temporary airway was established through the open wound at the site of the rupture. Resection of devitalized tissue including 3 tracheal ring segments, and anastomosis of the tracheal ends was subsequently performed under general anesthesia. Wound healing was complicated by a peritracheal abscess, which responded successfully to drainage and antibiotic administration.
Tracheobronchial perfusion during exercise in ponies. Tracheobronchial circulation during exercise has previously not been examined. Comparative anatomy, physiology, and function of the upper respiratory tract. The anatomical characteristics of the upper respiratory tract of various experimental animals and man are described. There are a number of differences and similarities macroscopically and microscopically between the species. Perhaps one of the most obvious examples of anatomical differences is in the structure of the turbinates. Some of the differences could affect deposition and clearance of particles in the nasal cavities. Effects of compounds in the nasal cavity, larynx, and trachea can differ depending on the cellular composition of the mucosa.
Tracheal obstructions in two horses and a donkey. The clinical signs associated with intramural tracheal obstructions in two horses and a donkey were respiratory distress and coughing, which were aggravated by exercise and excitement. The obstructions were at the level of the thoracic inlet and consisted either of flattening of the cartilage rings in the dorsoventral plane or of cartilage rings having a scroll-like conformation. They appeared to be developmental in origin and to have been present for a considerable time before the onset of clinical signs. Endoscopy and radiography were helpful in the diagnosis of the condition.
Tracheal mucus transport rate in healthy horses. Tracheal mucus transport rates were measured over a 10-minute period in 20 healthy horses twice in 24 hours. The mean rate was 1.93 +/- 0.55 cm/min on day 1 and 1.99 +/- 0.49 cm/min 24 hours later. The mean difference between day 1 and day 2 (0.06 +/- 0.42 cm/min) was not significant (P = 0.55). The range on day 1 was 1.12 to 2.9 cm/min and 1.11 to 2.89 cm/min on day 2.
Wounds of the esophagus and trachea. Wounds of the esophagus and trachea are uncommon, but closed wounds can be difficult to diagnose and treat. Esophageal wounds are the more serious and can be life-threatening; however, appropriate surgical and medical treatment applied without delay can be successful in some cases, especially in full-thickness longitudinal wounds. Tracheal wounds are usually less severe, but the high risk of iatrogenic injuries to the trachea should be recognized. Also, tracheal injuries can limit the athletic potential of a horse.

Comparison of bacteria isolated from specimens obtained by use of endoscopic guarded tracheal swabbing and percutaneous tracheal aspiration in horses. Results of bacteriologic culture of specimens obtained from 14 horses with pneumonia and from 15 horses that were clinically healthy (nonpneumonia group) were compared. Effect of water vapor-saturated air therapy on bronchoalveolar lavage and tracheal mucus transport rate in clinically normal horses. Comparison of transtracheal aspirate and bronchoalveolar lavage cytology in 50 horses with chronic lung disease. Comparisons were made between transtracheal aspirate (TTA) and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cytology obtained from 50 horses with chronic lung disease and from 10 control horses. There was no significant correlation between the TTA cytology and the BAL cytology, suggesting that the cell population in the trachea is not representative of the cell population in the lower airways. Treatment of respiratory distress in a prematurely born foal. A foal born 3 weeks prematurely was treated for respiratory distress, using a combination of oxygen therapy and mechanical ventilatory assistance. Clinical response and arterial blood gas tensions were monitored regularly. Continuous positive-airway pressure and intermittent positive-pressure ventilation administered via a nasotracheal tube were effective in improving arterial oxygenation and ventilatory function.
The distribution of mucosal lymphoid nodules in the equine respiratory tract. Mucosal lymphoid nodules were identified within the equine respiratory tract by an acetic acid fixation technique. Nodules were identified in foetuses from nine months gestational age, and estimates of total and regional nodule populations were made in foetal, neonatal and adult horses. Nodules occurred at specific sites within the tract, which probably relate to areas where inhaled antigens accumulate.
