Multidirectional in vivo strain analysis of the equine radius and tibia during dynamic loading with and without a cast. Rosette strain gauges were applied to the equine radius and tibia. Three sites were examined on each bone on separate occasions (proximal metaphysis, middiaphysis, and distal metaphysis). At each site, 4 rosette gauges were applied around the bone (ie, cranial, caudal, medial, and lateral). Strain recordings were made while walking the horse with and without a full-limb plaster cast. Chronic eosinophilic gastroenteritis in the horse. Four cases of chronic eosinophilic gastroenteritis in horses are described. The disease was manifested clinically by weight loss, malabsorption and diarrhea of soft, formless feces. A chronic inflammatory reaction, with diffuse and focal eosinophilic infiltrates, was present in the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine, and mesenteric lymph nodes. The cause of the lesion was not determined but was thought to the due to an ingested allergen, as the lesion is indicative of an on-going, immediate hypersensitivity reaction. Twinning in mares: A survey of veterinarians and analyses of theriogenology records. Responses of 22 veterinarians to a questionnaire and the records of three brood-mare farms were examined to obtain information on twinning. The incidence rates of multiple ovulations on the three farms were 9%, 11%, and 22%. The multiple ovulation rate was reduced 42-67% in foaling mares compared to barren and maiden mares. Multiple ovulations were significantly more frequent in Thoroughbreds (19%) than in Quarter Horses (9%) and Appaloosas (8%). Use of a bone plate for repair of proximal physeal fractures of the tibia in two foals. Salter-Harris type II proximal tibial fractures were repaired in two 1-month-old foals, using a dynamic compression plate. The plate was placed on the medial aspect of the tibia, and a single cancellous bone screw was used to reduce the proximal fragment displacement. The plate provided fixation during healing and functioned as a transphyseal bridge, which induced a disparity in growth and corrected a slight lateral angulation of the limb. Radiographic changes in the lungs of horses with exercise-induced epistaxis. This paper describes the distinctive radiographic changes detected in the dorso-caudal lungfields of four racing thoroughbreds recently affected by exercise-induced epistaxis. A diffuse but localized increase in density was seen in all four cases, which demonstrated a variation from a predominantly alveolar density to an interstitial pattern and finally to increased bronchial markings. Limb deformities in foals associated with ingestion of locoweed by mares. Five of 26 pregnant mares observed ingesting locoweed (Astragalus mollisimus) subsequently aborted and another 10 produced foals with various limb deformities. Seven of the foals had deformities of a flexion-extension type and 3 had angular deformities. Four foals were normal. The limb deformities either resolved spontaneously (5 cases) or were treated successfully (in 4 of the other 5 cases). Ethmoid hematoma of the equine. Two cases of ethmoid hematoma of the equine are reported. Clinically both horses had intermittent unilateral epistaxis unassociated with exercise. In one horse, diagnosis was based on the use of an endoscope for visualization and for biopsy of a mass associated with the ethmoid turbinates. In the other horse, exploratory trephination of the posterior maxillary sinus was necessary to obtain a diagnostic biopsy specimen. Radiography was helpful in the diagnosis of one case. Equine ocular onchocerciasis: histopathologic study. Equine eyes (368) were examined clinically and histologically for abnormalities associated with the presence of ocular microfilariae of naturally occurring Onchocerca sp infection. Forty of the eyes had microfilariae in the conjunctiva, but distinguishing clinical abnormalities were not associated with their presence. Pulmonary haemorrhage in standardbred horses after racing. Endoscopic examinations of the upper respiratory tract were done on 92 of 314 Standardbred horses that raced one or more times at 4 consecutive, weekly race meetings. Although participation was voluntary, the characteristics of the population of horses examined were not statistically different from those of all horses that raced. No horse showed epistaxis, but 34 (32.4%) examinations of the trachea revealed blood that ranged from a trace in the tracheal mucus to large amounts scattered over the tracheal walls.
