Topic:Veterinary Care

Veterinary care in horses encompasses the medical and preventive measures taken to maintain and improve the health and well-being of equine patients. It includes a wide range of practices such as routine health examinations, vaccinations, dental care, parasite control, and management of injuries and diseases. Veterinary care also involves diagnostic procedures, surgical interventions, and therapeutic treatments tailored to the specific needs of horses. This page gathers peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore various aspects of equine veterinary care, including advancements in diagnostic techniques, treatment protocols, and health management strategies to support the well-being and performance of horses.

Traumatic fractures of the equine hock: a report of 13 cases.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1982   Volume 14, Issue 1 62-68 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1982.tb02338.x
Jakovljevic S, Gibbs C, Yeats JJ.The clinical features, radiographic findings, management and outcome in 13 cases of traumatic fracture of the hock joint are reported. The principal fracture sites were the distal tibial malleoli (5 cases), the fibular tarsal bone (4 cases), the tibial tarsal bone (3 cases) and the proximal end of metatarsal IV (one case). An additional small chip fracture of the central tarsal was noted in 2 cases. Three horses were destroyed immediately after diagnosis, 2 failed to recover following surgical intervention and one remained lame and was destroyed after 3 months' rest. Seven horses recovered com...
Colic in a mare caused by a colonic neurofibroma.
The Canadian veterinary journal = La revue veterinaire canadienne    January 1, 1982   Volume 23, Issue 1 24-27
Pascoe PJ.A 16 year old Thoroughbred mare was presented to the Ontario Veterinary College because of an acute episode of colic. An exploratory laparotomy was performed and a neurofibroma was identified and successfully removed from the small colon. The clinical and pathological features of this case are discussed.

Subcellular distribution of particle-associated enzymes in horse neutrophil leukocytes.
Enzyme    January 1, 1982   Volume 27, Issue 3 141-148 doi: 10.1159/000459042
Heyneman RA, Vercauteren RE.The subcellular components of purified neutrophil leukocytes from horse blood were fractionated by isopyknic equilibration in sucrose and metrizamide gradients. Five classes of particles have been identified: dense azurophil granules containing the bulk of the lysosomal acid hydrolase and peroxidase activity (A); less dense particles, containing all the lysozyme activity, but not resolved from a second population of azurophils B, and particles of low density, biochemically characterized as a plasma membrane fraction (C). Isopyknic equilibration in sucrose disclosed a minor membrane fraction (D...

Primary structure of horse erythrocyte glycophorin HA. Its amino acid sequence has a unique homology with those of human and porcine erythrocyte glycophorins.
The Journal of membrane biology    January 1, 1982   Volume 64, Issue 3 205-215 doi: 10.1007/BF01870887
Murayama JI, Tomita M, Hamada A.The complete amino acid sequence of the major sialoglycoproteins of horse erythrocyte membranes, glycophorin HA, was determined by manual sequencing methods, using tryptic, chymotryptic, and cyanogen bromide fragments. Glycophorin HA is a polypeptide chain of 120 amino acid residues and contains 10 oligosaccharide units attached to the amino-terminal side of the molecule. Its amino terminus is pyroglutamic acid. All of the oligosaccharides are linked O-glycosidically to threonine or serine residues. The amino acid sequence is consistent with the transmembrane orientation of glycophorins. There...

Variation in cellular tropism between isolates of equine herpesvirus-1 in foals.
Archives of virology    January 1, 1982   Volume 74, Issue 1 41-51 doi: 10.1007/BF01320781
Patel JR, Edington N, Mumford JA.Subtype-1 isolates of Equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) from a quadriplegic horse and from an aborted foetus were compared with each other and with a subtype-2 respiratory isolate. All 3 isolates were detected in the epithelium and macrophages of the respiratory tract. Both the paresis and foetal subtype-1 isolates replicated in the epithelium of the ileum and this correlated with the recovery of virus from faeces in vivo. The paresis subtype-1 isolate also had a predelection for vascular endothelial cells, particularly in the nasal mucosa, but also in the lungs, central nervous system, adrenal and...

Observations on the potential role of oesophageal radiography in the horse.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1982   Volume 14, Issue 1 73-79 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1982.tb02341.x
Greet TR.Radiological features of the oesophagus of 7 normal horses and 13 with oesophageal lesions are described. The use of barium sulphate as a contrast agent and the techniqes of its administration are discussed. It is suggested that chronic intermittent oesophageal impaction with food material was a predisposing factor in the development of a localised oesophageal dilation in 3 horses and that one other probably resulted from an injury. A similar dilatation was seen which resulted from oesophageal constriction by a vascular ring. Megaoesophagus was seen in 2 ponies associated with grass sickness a...
