Prevalence and epizootiology of equine salmonellosis. Feces from 1,451 horses entering a veterinary hospital over a 13-month period were cultured for salmonella. A total of 46 horses (3.2%) yielded 1 or more salmonella-positive fecal cultures. Twenty horses were found to be excreting salmonella in the feces on admission, and 5 of these later had severe diarrhea associated with enteric salmonellosis. Clinically important structures of the equine hock. A study method has been devised to review clinically important structures of the equine hock joint on a fresh specimen. The review can be done alone; dissection takes about 2 hours; special tools or materials are not required.
Chronic enteritis associated with the malabsorption and protein-losing enteropathy in the horse. Chronic granulomatous enteritis associated with weight loss and hypoproteinemia was identified in 2 horses. Both horses continued to have normally formed feces. Malabsorption of carbohydrate and lipid, with concomitant gastrointestinal protein loss was demonstrated in 1 case. One horse was treated symptomatically and gained 108 kg. In both cases, principal gastrointestinal lesions were partial to total villus atrophy and transmural mononuclear leukocytosis, with lymphocytes and histiocytes predominating. The cause of the condition was not identified in either case.
Navicular disease in the hindlimbs of the horse. Of 124 horses determined to have navicular disease during a 5-year period, 6 had clinical and radiographic signs of the disease in both hindlimbs. These 6 were all castrated males, ranging in age from 3 to 12 years, and were used for work of similar nature: roping, cutting, and pleasure. Treatment consisted of posterior digital neurectomy and corrective shoeing in 2 cases, posterior digital neurectomy alone in 2 cases, and corrective shoeing alone in 2 cases. Following treatment, lameness subsided, and all 6 horses were returned to full use.
Measurement of neonatal equine immunoglobulins for assessment of colostral immunoglobulin transfer: comparison of single radial immunodiffusion with the zinc sulfate turbidity test, serum electrophoresis, refractometry for total serum protein, and the sodium sulfite precipitation test. Four procedures for assessment of adequacy of colostral immunoglobulin (Ig) transfer in foals were evaluated. Results of zinc sulfate turbidity test, serum electrophoresis, total serum protein refractometry, and sodium sulfite precipitation test were compared with immunoglobulin G content determined by single radial immunodiffusion. The zinc sulfate turbidity test gave acceptable results for IgG, except that hemolyzed serum samples gave higher than expected values. A correction factor for hemolyzed serum was found to be useful. Immunoglobulins and secretory component in the external secretions of foals with combined immunodeficiency. Nasal washings and tears were collected from seven Arabian foals with combined immunodeficiency and nine normal foals. The major immunoglobulin in the external secretions of normal foals over 2 months of age was secretory immunoglobulin A, whereas foals with combined immunodeficiency lacked this immunoglobulin. The external secretions of both normal and immunodeficient foals contained free secretory component at birth.
Evaluation of inferior check ligament desmotomy for treatment of acquired flexor tendon contracture in the horse. The usefulness of inferior check ligament desmotomy as a treatment for acquired tendon contracture in horses was evaluated in 13 cases of deep digital flexor (DDF) contracture and in 3 cases of combined superficial digital flexor (SDF) and DDF contracture. In 8 of 9 cases of DDF contracture in which the dorsal surface of the hoof had not passed beyond being vertical to the ground, the surgical procedure was successful in returning the limb to a normal position and function. Interruption of aortic arch in two foals. Two foals with a history of normalcy at birth developed a lack of exercise tolerance and weakness in the first few days of life. Weakness, inability to rise, and reluctance to suckle were common complaints. Physical examination of both foals revealed a cardiovascular abnormality, with a loud systolic murmur audible over both thoracic walls. Additional diagnostic techniques were blood gas analysis, radiography, cardiovascular catheterization, and necropsy. Mixed lymphocyte culture responses in combined immunodeficiency of horses. Combined immunodeficiency in horses is a genetic disorder in which there is a defect in the production of committed B and T lymphocytes. In this study, peripheral blood mononuclear leukocytes from foals with combined immunodeficiency were examined for their capacity to stimulate and respond in one-way mixed lymphocyte cultures. Equine myositis and septicemia caused by Acinetobacter calcoaceticus infection. Myositis and septicemia caused by Acinetobacter calcoaceticus were diagnosed in a mare. The infection was characterized clinically by ventral swelling and edema, diarrhea, listlessness, and rectal temperature of 39.4 C. The mare was treated symptomatically for 2 days but died on the 3rd day. Conditions seen at necropsy were myositis, enteritis, typhlitis, colitis, and hepatitis. Repair of physeal fractures of the tuber olecranon in the horse, using a tension band method. Physeal fractures of the tuber olecranon of 4 horses were treated, using the tension band method of compression fracture repair. A cortical bone screw and Steinmann pin were placed through the proximal fragment into the distal parent bone parallel to the palmar border of the olecranon. The tension band was placed dorsal to the Steinmann pin and anchored in a hole through the shaft of the ulna 10 cm distal to the tuber olecranon. Of the 4 foals, 2 became pasture sound, 1 is now being worked under saddle, and the 4th showed no signs of lameness 5 months after surgery.
Immunocytochemical demonstration of calcitonin-containing C-cells in the thyroid glands of different mammals. In the thyroid glands of the horse, pig, deer, mole, and rat, C-cells could be demonstrated by means of the immunocytochemical PAP-technique using rabbit antisera against human calcitonin. Only in ruminants, the cross-reaction between the intracellularly stored antigen and the antibodies used appeared to be incomplete.
Stability of horse muscle acylphosphatase to heat and to urea. The thermal stability of horse muscle acylphosphatase was investigated by measuring the inactivation constants at various pH and temperature values, and by differential spectra technique. This enzyme has high thermal stability in an acidic environment but is inactivated in an alkaline medium. It was found that the enzyme can be protected against such inactivation at pH 8.0 by increasing its concentration and the ionic strength of the solution. Synthetic antigens. Horse “natural” antibodies against interpolymer of styrene and maleic acid (PSM). Properties of horse natural anti-PSM antibodies are described. The antibodies were of IgG class. Electrostatic forces were mainly involved in reaction of PSM with horse antibodies. The reaction was inhibited by low molecular compounds resembling structural unit of PSM. Studies of difference spectra and ORD and CD spectra showed no major conformational changes in horse antibodies after reaction with PSM.
Stability and kinetic behavior of carboxymethylated horse muscle acylphosphatase. Horse muscle acylphosphatase consists of a main chain S-S bound to glutathione. It was found that removal of the glutathione by reduction and successive carboxymethylation of the only cysteine of the main chain affects the stability of the enzyme, mainly with respect to thermal inactivation. On the other hand, the kinetic properties of the enzyme are affected very little.
Current status of semen preservation in the ram, boar and stallion. From the studies cited it was concluded that short and long term preservation of stallion semen has encountered major obstacles. Fertilizing capacity of extended or extended and cooled spermatozoa has been impaired. With the hydrogen ion extenders, the fertility was depressed either with or without glycerol when the semen was inseminated immediately after extension.
