Systemic/topical therapy. Hopefully, the practitioner has obtained a basic broader knowledge of the options available for topical and systemic equine dermatologic therapy. There are many topical and systemic agents that can aid in the treatment of specific skin disease and there are safer alternatives to glucocorticoid therapy. Because equine dermatology is still in its infancy, there is still much to be learned. The practitioner is encouraged to pay close attention to this specialty because it will continue to evolve rapidly.

Laparoscopic anatomy of the equine abdomen. Laparoscopy was performed on 6 horses (2 mares, 2 geldings, 2 stallions) to determine the normal laparoscopic anatomy of the equine abdomen. After withholding feed for 36 hours, horses were examined from the left and right paralumbar fossae, and the visceral anatomic structures were recorded by videotape and photography. Treatment of olecranon bursitis in horses: 10 cases (1986-1993). Medical records of 10 horses with olecranon bursitis were reviewed to examine treatments, evaluate a technique for en bloc resection of the bursa in standing horses, and determine outcome of the horses after treatment. Before admission, 6 horses had been treated by needle aspiration of fluid from the mass, followed by injection of corticosteroids. Pheochromocytoma in two horses. A 12-year-old Standard-bred mare and a 21-year-old Quarter Horse gelding were treated for signs of abdominal pain and sweating. The mare also had muscle fasciculations, azotemia, and ataxia, and was euthanatized after signs of pain became refractory to analgesics. Arthroscopic surgery for subchondral cystic lesions of the medial femoral condyle in horses: 41 cases (1988-1991). Clinical signs, radiographic and arthroscopic findings, and outcome for 41 horses with subchondral cystic lesions of the medial femoral condyle treated by arthroscopic surgery were reviewed. Surgical treatment of fractures of the tibial tuberosity in 6 adult horses. This paper describes the clinical and radiological features, surgical techniques used and results obtained in 6 horses with fractures of the tibial tuberosity. The horses were presented between 24 h and 8 weeks following injury. In all 6 cases, the fragments were displaced proximocranially and in 2 of these, there was comminution. Endoscopy of the upper respiratory tract during treadmill exercise: a clinical study of 100 horses. Endoscopy of the upper respiratory tract was performed in 100 horses during high speed treadmill exercise. Reasons for endoscopy were a history of an abnormal noise during exercise in 75 horses, poor performance in 17 horses and to evaluate the results of upper respiratory tract surgery in 8 horses. Ovariohysterectomy in six mares. Six mares had ovariohysterectomy performed for chronic pyometra associated with cervical abnormalities, uterine neoplasia, or removal of a macerated fetus. Tenotomy of the tibial insertion of the semitendinosus muscle of two horses with fibrotic myopathy. Two horses with fibrotic myopathy of the semitendinosus muscle are described. The report deals with the aetiology, clinical signs and diagnosis of the condition, and discusses the different surgical techniques described in the literature. Tenotomies were performed on both horses. Excellent results were obtained in the horse in which only the semitendinosus muscle was affected, but in the horse in which the semimembranosus and gracilis muscles were also involved the results were less satisfactory.
Mercury toxicosis caused by ingestion of a blistering compound in a horse. Mercury toxicosis by ingestion was diagnosed in a 3-year-old Quarter Horse mare with a history of anorexia and signs of abdominal discomfort. Ten and 9 days prior to admission, an inorganic mercuric blistering agent has been applied for topical treatment of dorsal metacarpal disease. Laparoscopic repair of a bladder rupture in a foal. Ruptured bladder was diagnosed in a 90-day-old Thoroughbred colt that had suffered a open, comminuted tibial fracture 2 days earlier. The bladder rupture was identified by laparoscopic examination of the abdomen and was repaired using a laparoscopic stapling instrument. Skin lesions in dogs, horses and calves caused by the stable fly Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae). Specific skin lesions caused by Stomoxys calcitrans on the feeding sites of different species are described. Skin lesions appeared on dogs, horses and calves following bites of stable flies. Necrotic dermatitis was observed in 32 dogs of various breeds at the tip of the ears. Exudative dermatitis appeared on the legs of 45 adult horses and dermatitis was diagnosed in the "hair whirlpools" on the backs of 18 white calves.
Activity of praziquantel (0.5 mg kg-1) against Anoplocephala perfoliata (Cestoda) in equids. Praziquantel injectable formulation was administered at 0.5 mg k-1 per os to 24 equids naturally infected with 1-183 (average 40) Anoplocephala perfoliata. Drug activity was evaluated by a modified critical test method with necropsy 24 h after treatment.
