Correction of patellar luxation by recession sulcoplasty in three foals. Lateral luxation of the patella in four femoropatellar joints of three foals was repaired by recession sulcoplasty and medial imbrication of the joint. One foal was euthanatized because of septic arthritis caused by incisional dehiscence, and the other two foals were normal 2 years after surgery. Recession sulcoplasty combined with medial imbrication of the joint capsule resulted in a functional femoropatellar joint and should be considered in foals affected with lateral patellar luxation.
Characterisation of osseous bodies of the distal phalanx of foals. The distal phalanx and metacarpal physis of both forelimbs of 32 Thoroughbred foals 3-32 weeks of age were radiographed to identify those limbs with osseous bodies at a palmar process (PP) of the distal phalanx. ELISA screening with GC-MS confirmation of the tranquilizer chlorprothixene administered in subtherapeutic doses to horses. A commercially available generic promazine ELISA kit is available which shows cross-reactivity for the tranquilizer chlorprothixene (CPT). The ELISA test readily detects the presence of CPT or its metabolites in equine urine for up to 24 h after the i.v. and i.m. administration of sub-therapeutic doses (4.5 mg) to three horses. Uterine transport of prostaglandin E(2)-releasing simulated embryonic vesicles in mares. Paravertebral thoracolumbar anaesthesia in 10 horses. The caudal border of the last rib was used as a reliable point of orientation while performing paravertebral thoracolumbar anaesthesia (PTLA) on 10 horses undergoing standing flank laparotomy. Equine fetal kinetics: Presentation and location. The extent and nature of fetal mobility (presentation and location changes) were studied in 10 pony mares by ultrasonic examinations each week during the fetal stage (Day 40 to term). Keratan sulfate as a marker of articular cartilage catabolism and joint treatment in ponies. Surgical treatment of cervical stenotic myelopathy in horses: 73 cases (1983-1992). Seventy-three horses with cervical stenotic myelopathy underwent cervical vertebral interbody fusion (n = 63) or dorsal laminectomy (n = 10). Neurologic function improved in 77% of horses, and 46% of horses achieved athletic function (racing, race training, or pleasure riding) after cervical vertebral interbody fusion for static and dynamic spinal cord compressive lesions. Polycystic hepatic disease, thoracic granular cell tumor and secondary hypertrophic osteopathy in a horse. A 13-year-old American Saddlebred mare was presented with a 4-day history of anorexia. Physical examination revealed increased inspiratory effort and bony enlargement of the distal limbs. Radiographs indicated a thoracic mass and periosteal proliferations on the distal limbs consistent with hypertrophic osteopathy. Palmar digital neurectomy in horses. 57 cases (1984-1990). The medical records of 57 horses that had palmar digital neurectomy performed between 1984 and 1990 were reviewed. Neurectomies were performed either by transection and electrocoagulation (47 horses) or by the guillotine technique (10 horses). Middle-aged geldings, Quarter Horses, and Thoroughbreds were significantly over-represented when compared with the hospital population. Lateral patellar luxation in miniature horses. Bilateral luxation of the patella in four Miniature Horses was corrected by a lateral release incision and medial imbrication of the parapatellar fascia to the tendon of the sartorius muscle. Before surgery, the four horses had a grade 3 to 4 lateral patellar luxation bilaterally and had difficulty walking. Trochlear ridge hypoplasia was evident on radiographs in each horse. Follow-up information varied from 11 months to 4 years after surgery. Three horses had no patellar luxation or lameness. The other horse had a normal right stifle, but patellar luxation (grade 3) had recurred on the left.
Effect of temperature, duration of storage and sampling procedure on ammonia concentration in equine blood plasma. The effect of storage duration at different storage temperatures on the plasma ammonia concentration of equine EDTA whole blood, EDTA plasma and heparin plasma samples was investigated. Further, the effect of jugular vein compression before and during blood sampling on the plasma ammonia values was evaluated. Besnoitiosis in a horse. Besnoitiosis was confirmed in a pony which presented with inspiratory dyspnoea, scleroderma and ventral oedema. Numerous cysts were visible in the sclerae. Histological examination of the skin confirmed the presence of numerous cysts. The parasite could not be transmitted by subcutaneous injection of homogenised skin from the infected horse to rabbits and a horse. Ultrastructural morphology of the crescent-shaped bradyzoites was not compatable with Besnoitia besnoiti or B. jellisoni and it is proposed that the infection was caused by B. bennetti.
Surgical correction of an equine deviated anterior maxilla. The surgical correction of midfacial deformities of the horse have rarely been undertaken. This article describes the successful management of a submucous cleft of the maxilla in a young colt. Details of the operative and perioperative medical and surgical management are described. [A horse with grass sickness]. A three year old warm-blood gelding with severe colic was referred to a veterinary clinic. The effectiveness of detomidine with or without atropine sulfate premedication in producing sedation and analgesia for arthrocentesis was studied in 12 horses. Assessment and treatment of equine humeral fractures: retrospective study of 54 cases (1972-1990). Fractures of the humerus were diagnosed in horses at The Ohio State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Focal exocytosis by eosinophils–compound exocytosis and cumulative fusion. We have investigated the granule fusion events during exocytosis in horse eosinophils by time-resolved patch-clamp capacitance measurements. Stimulation with intracellular GTP gamma S leads to a stepwise capacitance increase by 4.0 +/- 0.9 pF. At GTP gamma S concentrations < 20 microM the step size distribution is in agreement with the granule size distribution in resting cells. Immunoaffinity chromatography combined with gas chromatography-negative ion chemical ionisation mass spectrometry for the confirmation of flumethasone abuse in the equine. Immunoaffinity chromatography using a synthesised immunosorbent was used to extract tritiated dexamethasone (with dexamethasone carrier) from equine urine at a recovery of 81.7 +/- 8.4% (mean +/- S.D.). A method utilising this procedure coupled to cool on-column injection gas chromatography-negative ion chemical ionisation mass spectrometry is also described for the confirmation of low levels of flumethasone in equine urine samples.
Rhabdomyosarcoma of the tongue in a horse. A 5-year-old Quarter Horse mare was examined because of a 6-month history of quidding and nasal discharge that contained feed material. Physical examination revealed weight loss and dorsal displacement of the soft palate, caused by a soft tissue mass located at the dorsal aspect of the base of the tongue. Surgical resection of the mass was successfully performed through an oral approach. The histopathologic diagnosis was rhabdomyosarcoma.
Focal gingival hyperplasia in a horse. A diagnosis of gingival hyperplasia in a 22-year-old Quarter Horse gelding was confirmed by histologic examination. Clinical signs included difficulty eating hay, and a large, intraoral soft tissue mass measuring 13 x 8 x 4.5 cm. The mass was located in the mucosa on the lingual aspect of the caudal left portion of the mandible, ventral to the base of the tongue, and covered the second and third lower molars, extending rostrally along the buccal mucosa to the premolars. Radiographic examination of the equine head. Radiographic examinations of the equine head can be performed with portable x-ray machines. The views comprising the examination depend on the area of the head being examined. With a knowledge of radiographic anatomy and radiographic signs of disease, valuable diagnostic information can be obtained from the radiographic examination. In addition, the radiographic information can also be used to develop a prognosis and determine the most appropriate therapy.
