Purification and characterization of insulin and the C-peptide of proinsulin from Przewalski’s horse, zebra, rhino, and tapir (Perissodactyla).
General and comparative endocrinology    February 1, 1993   Volume 89, Issue 2 299-308 doi: 10.1006/gcen.1993.1036
Henry JS, Lance VA, Conlon JM.Within the order Perissodactyla, the primary structure of insulin has been strongly conserved. Insulin from Przewalski's horse and the mountain zebra (suborder Hippomorpha) is the same as that from the domestic horse and differs from insulin from the white rhinoceros and mountain tapir (suborder Ceratomorpha) by a single substitution (Gly-->Ser) at position 9 in the A-chain. A second molecular form of Przewalski's horse insulin isolated in this study was shown to represent the gamma-ethyl ester of the Glu17 residue of the A-chain. This component was probably formed during the extraction of ...

Comparative biochemistry and physiology. Comparative physiology    February 1, 1993   Volume 104, Issue 2 361-363 doi: 10.1016/0300-9629(93)90330-7
Moser LR, Lawrence LM, Novakofski J, Powell DM.1. Clearance of infused lipid was observed in six mature resting horses, 2 to 6 hr after receiving a meal of alfalfa hay. 2. Intralipid, a 10% triglyceride emulsion, was infused at a rate of 0.2 ml/kg into the jugular vein. 3. Blood samples were obtained for 80 min post-infusion and assayed for plasma triglyceride concentration. 4. Clearance rate of the infused lipid was very slow (mean t1/2 = 269 min). 5. The clearance rate of the infused lipid in these horses was much slower than has been observed in other species. 6. The slow clearance of infused triglyceride in horses may suggest an inabil...
Ultrastructure of epididymal epithelium in Equus caballus.
Annals of anatomy = Anatomischer Anzeiger : official organ of the Anatomische Gesellschaft    February 1, 1993   Volume 175, Issue 1 1-9 doi: 10.1016/s0940-9602(11)80229-3
Arrighi S, Romanello MG, Domeneghini C.The ultrastructure of the epithelial lining of the ductuli efferents and the ductus epididymis in the horse (Equus caballus) is described. Several types of cells can be distinguished: ciliated and non-ciliated cells make up the epithelium of the ductuli efferents, whereas principal, apical and basal cells are found in the ductus epididymis. The observations are compared with those made in other species, in particular in the donkey (Equus asinus), and the possible functional roles of the different cell types are discussed.

Comparison of the ability to bind lipids of beta-lactoglobulin and serum albumin of milk from ruminant and non-ruminant species.
The Journal of dairy research    February 1, 1993   Volume 60, Issue 1 55-63 doi: 10.1017/s0022029900027345
Pérez MD, Puyol P, Ena JM, Calvo M.The interaction of sheep, horse, pig, human and guinea-pig whey proteins with fatty acids has been studied. Using gel filtration and autoradiography, it was found that sheep beta-lactoglobulin and serum albumin from all species had the ability to bind fatty acids in vitro. Sheep beta-lactoglobulin, isolated from milk, had approximately 0.5 mol fatty acids bound per mol monomer protein, and albumin from sheep, horse and pig contained approximately 4.5, 2.9 and 4.7 mol fatty acids/mol protein respectively. However, beta-lactoglobulin from horse and pig milk had neither fatty acids physiologicall...
Oligonucleotide probes for DNA fingerprinting in horses.
Journal of animal breeding and genetics = Zeitschrift fur Tierzuchtung und Zuchtungsbiologie    January 12, 1993   Volume 110, Issue 1-6 301-304 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0388.1993.tb00741.x
Wilke K, Weimann M, Jung M, Geldermann H.10 different oligonucleotide probes were evaluated for DNA fingerprinting in horses. Five probes were able to detect polymorphic bands. The probes (GT)(8) , (GTG)(5) and (GGAT)(4) are most informative for individual identification and were used to analyze a population of Hannoveranian horses. The probability that two individuals have the same DNA fingerprint pattern is 1.2 × 10(-8) , 5.2 × 10(-10) and 1.5 × 10(-7) respectively. Using a combination of the three probes, paternity tests were performed with exclusion probabilities between 0.08% and 4%. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Oligonukleotide-Sonden fÃ...

Acta anatomica    January 1, 1993   Volume 146, Issue 2-3 200-204 doi: 10.1159/000147447
Ratzlaff MH, Wilson PD, Hyde ML, Balch OK, Grant BD.Three methods were used simultaneously to determine the relationships between the vertical forces exerted on the hooves and the positions of the limbs and hooves at the times of peak vertical forces from 2 horses galloping on a track straightaway. Vertical forces were recorded from an instrumented shoe, fetlock joint motion was measured with an electrogoniometer and the angles of the carpus, fetlock and hoof were determined from slow-motion films. At hoof contact, the mean angles of the carpus and fetlock were 181-182 degrees and 199-206 degrees, respectively. Peak vertical forces on the heel ...

Shortening of the forelimb in the horse during the stance phase.
Acta anatomica    January 1, 1993   Volume 146, Issue 2-3 193-195 doi: 10.1159/000147445
Hjertén G, Drevemo S.Compressions in the forelimb of a horse trotting at 3.7 m/s were studied using high-speed cinematography. From a diagram of shortenings it has been concluded that successive loadings in the longitudinal direction from below signify longer impact time and smaller impact forces compared to a theoretically stiff limb. It is proposed that the limb takes up the impact force passively until the onset of loading at the elbow joint, i.e. 30 ms following first contact.
A method for loading equine platelets with the fluorescent calcium indicator Fura-2: ADP induces a rise in the cytosolic free calcium ion concentration.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1993   Volume 25, Issue 1 45-48 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1993.tb02900.x
Poole AW, Heath MF, Sage SO, Evans RJ.Equine platelets in platelet-rich plasma were incubated with the fluorescent indicator dye, Fura-2-AM (Fura-2-acetoxymethyl ester) and the degree of loading of the cells with the dye and the extent of hydrolysis of the ester was assessed by quantitative fluorimetry and by thin-layer chromatography respectively. Under these conditions the cells loaded poorly with Fura-2 to a concentration of 4 microM. The technique was validated by demonstrating adequate loading of human platelets with Fura-2, to a concentration of 250-300 microM, using the same method. The removal of plasma from the extracellu...

The extended canter: a comparison of some kinematic variables in horses trained for dressage and for racing.
Acta anatomica    January 1, 1993   Volume 146, Issue 2-3 183-187 doi: 10.1159/000147443
Clayton HM.This study was designed to test the hypothesis that there is no significant difference in selected temporal and linear stride variables of the extended canter in horses bred and trained for dressage or racing. Nine advanced-level dressage horses and 7 Thoroughbred racehorses were filmed at a frame rate of 200 Hz at an extended canter on a sand track. Two strides were recorded per trial, and each horse performed 6 or 7 trials. Temporal and linear data were determined from the films, and descriptive statistics (mean, SD) were calculated. Strides were selected for analysis on the basis of having ...
Study on the energy and protein metabolism in horses.
Archiv fur Tierernahrung    January 1, 1993   Volume 45, Issue 2 173-185 doi: 10.1080/17450399309386098
Burlacu GH, Voicu D, Voicu I, Nicolae M, Petrache E, Georgescu GH, Balan S.The present study focused on energy and protein metabolism in pregnant and lactating mares, including the suckling and weaned growing horses, in order to determine feed availability, as also the energy and protein requirements. The authors found that the feeding diets, consisting of alfalfa hay, oats and compounds, had different availability values in terms of energy and protein, according to animal physiological conditions and age. Thus, the pregnant mares utilized the metabolizable energy (ME) and digestible crude protein (DCP) intake in average proportions of 64.5 +/- 3.2%, 54.6 +/- 3.0%, r...
Pulmonary artery wedge pressure increases with high-intensity exercise in horses.
American journal of veterinary research    January 1, 1993   Volume 54, Issue 1 142-146
Manohar M.Using catheter mounted microtip manometers, right atrial, pulmonary artery, and pulmonary artery wedge pressures were studied in 8 horses while they were standing quietly (rest), and during galloping at treadmill speeds of 8, 10, and 13 m/s. At rest, mean (+/- SEM) heart rate, mean right atrial pressure, mean pulmonary artery pressure, and mean pulmonary artery wedge pressure were 37 (+/- 2) beats/min, 8 (+/- 2) mm of Hg, 31 (+/- 2) mm of Hg, and 18 (+/- 2) mm of Hg, respectively. Exercise at treadmill belt speed of 8 m/s resulted in significant (P < 0.05) increments in heart rate, right at...
Haemagglutination-inhibiting antibodies against African horse sickness virus in domestic animals in Nigeria.
Veterinary research    January 1, 1993   Volume 24, Issue 6 483-487
Baba SS, Olaleye OD, Ayanbadejo OA.A sero-epidemiological survey of African horse sickness (AHS) virus in 261 animals which included 96 camels, 81 horses, 80 dogs and 4 donkeys was carried out in Nigeria. The animals had no history of vaccination against AHS. Sera were tested by the haemagglutination-inhibition (HI) test for the presence of antibody against AHS virus. Of these, 77 (95.1%) horse, 4 (100%) donkey, 10 (10.4%) camel and 28 (35%) dog sera samples tested were recorded as positive. The prevalence of antibody in samples taken from horses in different regions was similar. The prevalence of antibody to AHS virus detected...
Naturally occurring selenosis in Wyoming. Raisbeck MF, Dahl ER, Sanchez DA, Belden EL, O'Toole D.A review of Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory records for 1947-1987 revealed no substantiated cases of naturally occurring selenosis. However, older reports attributed thousands of animal deaths to selenium each year in this area. Beginning in August 1988, cases of suspected selenosis and selenium deficiency were solicited from veterinarians and producers by announcements in various statewide livestock publications. As of August 1991, 4 cases (all horses) of naturally occurring selenosis have been confirmed. Clinical signs were most often referable to epithelial damage, e.g., hoof lesions an...
A preliminary study of transitions between the walk and trot in dressage horses.
Acta anatomica    January 1, 1993   Volume 146, Issue 2-3 179-182 doi: 10.1159/000147442
Argue CK, Clayton HM.The object of this study was to determine the limb support sequence during the transitions from walk to trot and from trot to walk in dressage horses under saddle and to test the null hypothesis that the limb support sequence during the transitions is not related to the level of training. Sixteen dressage horses training at novice to FEI Grand Prix level were videotaped performing an average of 9 transitions each from walk to trot and from trot to walk. The 30-Hz videotapes were viewed in slow motion, and based on the limb support sequence the transitions were categorized into two types. In ty...
