Summary
This study investigates the effects of using one-time and repeated injections of stem cells derived from the umbilical cord of newborn horses to treat osteoarthritis-induced lameness in adult horses. The findings suggest that both treatments significantly reduce lameness, with no notable difference between single and repeated injection outcomes.
Research Overview
This is a pilot clinical study conducted on 28 horses suffering from osteoarthritis (OA) in their metacarpophalangeal joint (MPJ), causing lameness. The horses were split into two groups, MSC1 and MSC2, with the MSC1 group receiving a single injection of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) followed by a placebo injection after one month, while the MSC2 group received two MSC injections one month apart.
- The researchers performed joint injections using a blinded syringe and did clinical evaluations at the 1-month, 2-month, and 6-month marks.
- Radiographic examination of the affected joints was conducted at the start of the study and again six months later.
- The study also includes data from owner surveys to evaluate any adverse effects of the treatment.
Findings
The results pointed to a significant improvement in overall clinical scores, reflecting reduced lameness, for horses in both groups. Radiographic assessment did not suggest any significant changes in the OA score, osteophyte score, joint space width score or subchondral bone score between the start of the study and the 6-month mark.
- There was no significant difference found between the single and repeated injection groups at any point in the study.
- 18% of the horses exhibited adverse effects to the MSC injection, as reported by the owners.
- Despite the presence of osteoarthritis, lameness improved markedly over the 6-month period after treatment with umbilical cord-derived stem cells, coupled with 8 weeks of rest and rehabilitation.
Conclusion
Treatment with MSCs showed a significant improvement in lameness caused by osteoarthritis in horses, with no discernible difference in effectiveness between single and repeated injections. Thus, it suggests that there seems to be no apparent clinical advantage in administering repeated MSC injections at one-month intervals in horses with MPJ OA, compared to the effect of a single stem cell injection.
