Incidence of major injuries, severe colic, and acute laminitis at American Horse Shows Association A- and B-rated shows.
Abstract: A questionnaire was designed to determine the incidence of major injuries, severe colic, and acute laminitis in horses at American Horse Shows Association (AHSA) A- and B-rated shows, ie, those shows requiring a veterinarian in attendance. The questionnaire was sent to the show stewards and filled out by the attending veterinarians of the AHSA A- and B-rated shows held from January 1982 to October 1984. Of 2,952 questionnaires sent out, 799 (27%) were completed and returned by veterinarians; 99 of them were discarded because of incomplete or misleading information. The study revealed a low incidence of major injuries, severe colic, and acute laminitis in horses at AHSA A- and B-rated shows. In 700 horse shows surveyed, there was a total of 231 major injuries, severe colic, or acute laminitis. Considering that the shows surveyed had a median number of 193 horses and a median duration of 3 days, the 231 injuries represent a relatively small number, compared with the general population at risk.

This research article focuses on the prevalence of major injuries, severe colic, and acute laminitis in horses participating in the American Horse Shows Association’s A and B shows, which necessitate an attending veterinarian, through surveys sent to the show stewards.
Research Methodology
- A questionnaire was designed specifically for this study. It was meant to be filled out by veterinarians present at AHSA A- and B-rated shows.
- These shows took place between January 1982 and October 1984.
- Out of the 2,952 questionnaires that were distributed, 799 (27%) were properly filled out and returned by the attending veterinarians.
- However, 99 of the returned questionnaires had to be discarded due to incomplete or misleading information.
Research Findings
- The survey findings indicated a low prevalence of major injuries, severe colic, and acute laminitis in horses that participated in the AHSA A- and B-rated shows.
- The 700 horse shows that were surveyed reported a total of 231 instances (either major injuries, severe colic, or acute laminitis).
- Considering that the median number of horses per show was 193, with a median duration of 3 days, the 231 reported injuries represent a relatively small fraction of the at-risk population.
Importance of the Research
- This research is significant as it delivers insights into the health and safety conditions of horses that participate in AHSA A- and B-rated shows.
- The findings could help improve preventive measures, health care practices, and show regulations for horses at risk of getting major injuries, severe colic, or acute laminitis during shows.
