Neurotropic T-cell-rich B-cell lymphoma in a 14-year-old Morgan gelding.
Abstract: A 14-year-old Morgan gelding was presented for progressive weakness and muscle atrophy. The horse was initially diagnosed with equine protozoal myelitis based on history, physical examination, and laboratory diagnostics. Despite therapy, the horse declined clinically and was euthanized. Necropsy revealed a rare form of neurotropic lymphoma, described in this report.

Summary
This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.
The research is about a rare form of neurotropic lymphoma found in a 14-year-old Morgan horse who was initially diagnosed with equine protozoal myelitis but continued to decline despite treatment.
Case Presentation
- This study discusses an unusual case of a 14-year-old Morgan horse presented with progressive weakness and muscle wasting.
- Initially, the horse was diagnosed with Equine Protozoal Myelitis, a common neurological disease in horses, based on the animal’s history, physical examination, and laboratory diagnostics.
- Despite the administered therapy designed to combat the disease, the horse’s condition continued to deteriorate.
- Given the poor prognosis and the animal’s deteriorating quality of life, the decision was made to euthanize the horse.
Postmortem Findings and Diagnosis
- Upon necropsy, a rare form of a disease was diagnosed – neurotropic lymphoma.
- Lymphoma is a type of cancer that begins in immune system cells called lymphocytes, and neurotropic lymphoma is a rare variety that affects the nervous system. This is considered to be extremely unusual in horses.
- The postmortem examination revealed that the initial diagnosis of Equine Protozoal Myelitis was not the major factor contributing to the animal’s declining health. Instead, the neurotropic lymphoma was identified as the predominant cause of the clinical symptoms the horse was exhibiting.
Scientific Significance
- The study raises awareness about neurotropic lymphoma in horses, which may initially be misdiagnosed as another condition due to its rarity.
- In addition to highlighting the significance of postmortem examinations for accurate diagnoses, this case report also emphasizes the importance of considering rare diseases when common treatments fail to improve the animal’s condition.
- Furthermore, it may contribute to more extensive research in this area, potentially leading to better diagnostic measures and treatment options for neurotropic lymphoma in horses.
