Relationship between Resting and Recovery Heart Rate in Horses.
Abstract: In endurance racing the heart rate (HR) of horses in the veterinary gates has to reach a maximum set to continue racing. There is no literature on the relationship between resting HR (HRresting) and HR after exercise (HRrecovery). This relationship was examined in seven horses and the results were related to their v (speed at which the blood lactate concentration is 4 mmol/L). Horses were submitted to an exercise test to determine v. Thereafter, horses were exercised on a treadmill in randomized order for 10 and 60 min at different speeds. HR was measured before exercise and several times until 30 min of recovery. The relationship between HRresting and HRrecovery was significant in 16 out of 35 comparisons. There were no significant relationships between the v of the horses and their HRresting and between v and HRrecovery after 10 min of exercise, regardless of the speed of exercise, with one exception. The relationship between the v of the horses and their HRrecovery after 60 min of exercise was significant in the fifth minute after exercise at 3.5 m/s only. Conclusion: Because HRresting and HRrecovery are often related, pre-determined arbitrary HRrecovery values may not allow for fair competition during endurance racing.

The research involved testing the connection between resting and recovery heart rates in horses, with a particular focus on endurance racing. It concluded that the predesigned arbitrary values of recovery heart rate might not ensure fair competition in the sport, as there’s a significant relationship between resting and recovery heart rates.
Methodology
- The relationship between a horse’s resting heart rate and post-exercise heart rate was examined in seven horses. The results were analysed in relation to their v (the speed at which the horse’s blood lactate concentration reaches 4 mmol/L).
- The horses underwent an exercise test to determine v.
- Following this, the horses were subjected to treadmill exercises of 10 minute and 60 minute durations, at random speeds.
- The researchers measured the horses’ heart rates before and multiple times after the exercise, until 30 minutes into their recovery time.
Findings
- There was a significant correlation between resting heart rate and recovery heart rate in 16 out of the 35 comparisons made.
- However, there were no significant relationships between the v of the horses and their resting heart rates.
- Similarly, there was no significant relationship found between v and post-10-minute-exercise recovery heart rates, irrespective of the speed at which the exercise was performed, with one outlier exception.
- A significant relationship was found between v and recovery heart rate after 60 minutes of exercise—but only in the fifth minute after exercise performed at a speed of 3.5 m/s.
Conclusion
- The results suggest that there is often a significant relationship between a horse’s resting heart rate and its recovery heart rate following exercise.
- This finding indicates that predetermined arbitrary recovery heart rate values may not offer fair conditions for endurance horse racing, since they fail to consider this relationship.
- The study provides insightful data for further research in the field of horse athletics and raises questions about the fairness of some current practices in the sport.
