Summary
The research explores therapeutic methods for Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome, identifying omeprazole as the world’s predominant pharmacological treatment but suggesting the incorporation of coating agents and synthetic prostaglandins for increased effectiveness, alongside dietary and environmental measures for prevention.
Understanding Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS)
EGUS is a condition broadly used to describe ulcers that appear in different parts of a horse’s digestive system, including:
- The nonglandular squamous
- The glandular mucosa
- The terminal esophagus
- The proximal duodenum
The research shows that gastric ulcers usually develop in the squamous and glandular regions more frequently compared to the esophagus and duodenum. Additionally, they tend to have different causes or pathogenesis.
Omeprazole as a Pharmacological Solution
The study acknowledges omeprazole as the globally approved pharmacological solution for treating these ulcers. Omeprazole is a medication used to reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach, aiding in the healing of ulcers.
Enhancing Omeprazole Treatment
Despite the proven effectiveness of omeprazole, the research suggests it could be made more effective in treating EGUS by adding coating agents and synthetic prostaglandins. Coating agents can provide a protective layer against stomach acids, while synthetic prostaglandins may help to enhance the stomach’s defense against such acids.
Dietary and Environmental Prevention
The research points out the necessity of proper dietary and environmental management in preventing the recurrence of EGUS. Although the specifics of such management are not detailed in the abstract, past studies suggest strategies such as avoiding fasting, providing frequent access to water, introducing a high-forage diet, and limiting the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
