Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a species of yeast commonly used as a probiotic and digestive aid in animal feed. It is included in equine diets to support gut health, improve fiber digestion, and promote a balanced microbial population in the hindgut.
In equine nutrition, Saccharomyces cerevisiae is often added to feeds and supplements to enhance the fermentation of fibrous feedstuffs, leading to better nutrient absorption and digestive efficiency. It may be particularly beneficial for horses on high-fiber diets, those undergoing dietary transitions, or those prone to digestive disturbances such as colic or hindgut acidosis. While live yeast cultures provide direct probiotic effects, dried yeast products containing fermentation metabolites can also contribute to gut health and feed efficiency.
