A prospective study of septicaemia in colostrum-deprived foals. Fourteen mares and their foals were attended at parturition. After mare-foal bonding, 8 colostrum-deprived (CD) foals were removed from their dams, deprived of colostrum, and provided with an alternative milk source for the first 24 h of life. The mares were milked out every 2-4 h during this period to remove colostrum, after which the CD foals were returned to their mares and allowed to nurse. Airborne dust and aeroallergen concentration in a horse stable under two different management systems. Airborne dust concentration (ADC) was measured in 2 different horse management systems using an Andersen cascade impactor in the box-stall, and a personal Marple cascade impactor attached to the halter to measure ADC in the breathing zone. Communication of the ulnaris lateralis bursa with the equine elbow joint and evaluation of caudal arthrocentesis. Elbows from cadaver limbs were evaluated to determine the presence of a communication between the ulnaris lateralis bursa (ULB) and the joint and the extent of the bursa. Thirty-two pairs of joints were studied: 12 pairs were frozen, then transversely sectioned and 20 pairs were injected with methyl methacrylate. The 12 frozen-section pairs revealed a communication between the ULB and the elbow joint in 9/24 joints (37.5%) and a true bursa (absence of communication) in 15/24 joints (62.5%). Factors associated with the risk of developing sarcoid tumours in horses. A retrospective case-control study was conducted to identify risk factors in horses associated with the development of the common skin tumours known as sarcoids. The study involved 503 sarcoid cases diagnosed (January 1980-December 1989) at New York State College of Veterinary Medicine and a similar number of controls (non-sarcoid cases). A comparison of responses to analgesia of the navicular bursa and intra-articular analgesia of the distal interphalangeal joint in 59 horses. Analgesia of the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint and of the navicular bursa was performed independently in the lame or lamer forelimb of 59 horses, in which lameness was significantly improved by perineural analgesia of either the palmar digital or palmar (abaxial sesamoid) nerves. Ground reaction force patterns of Dutch warmblood horses at normal trot. This study was undertaken to establish limb loading patterns of sound horses at the trot, to provide a data base against which results for lame horses could be compared. Ground reaction force (GRF) data were collected from 20 clinically sound Dutch Warmblood horses. Platelet-activating factor (PAF) is an important mediator of endotoxaemia and various PAF receptor antagonists prevent many of the adverse effects of experimental endotoxaemia in laboratory animals. Factors influencing the outcome of equine anaesthesia: a review of 1,314 cases. Patient data, physiological variables and recovery quality were extracted from 1,314 records of equine anaesthetics covering a 7-year period and analysed retrospectively. Better recovery quality was significantly associated with shorter duration of anaesthesia, longer recovery times, less invasive surgery, a lower pulse rate at induction and higher pulse and respiratory rates during anaesthesia. Effects of sodium bicarbonate on cardiorespiratory measurements and exercise capacity in thoroughbred horses. We examined the effects of sodium bicarbonate in 6 Thoroughbred horses during submaximal and maximal treadmill exercise. Cardiorespiratory function was assessed together with the effect on exercise capacity by determining the run time to fatigue at maximal intensities. To discriminate between sodium bicarbonate's alkalinising effects and the fluid shifts that could result from the high osmotic load, we administered an equimolar solution of sodium chloride as a control. An immunohistological study of MHC class II expression and T lymphocytes in the endometrium of the mare. The distribution of T lymphocytes and of cells bearing MHC Class II antigens in the endometrium of the mare was studied using an avidin-biotin-peroxidase staining method. The cells within the endometrium which expressed MHC Class II were macrophages, lymphocytes, monocytes, dendritic cells, epithelial cells and endothelial cells. Clinical evaluation of an infusion of xylazine, guaifenesin and ketamine for maintenance of anaesthesia in horses. General anaesthesia was maintained in 40 horses by the continuous intravenous infusion of a mixture of 500 ml 10% guaifenesin solution, 1 g ketamine and 500 mg xylazine. The median duration of infusion was 65 mins (interquartile range 51-95 mins). Anaesthesia was characterised by active palpebral reflexes, variable degrees of nystagmus and occasional swallowing. Recognition of Pneumocystis carinii in foals with respiratory distress. Five 3-month-old foals presenting with fever and respiratory disease were found to have pulmonary abscesses with patchy to diffuse alveolar and interstitial pneumonia on post-mortem examination. All affected foals had evidence of Rhodococcus equi infection and had few to abundant Pneumocystis carinii cysts in the sections of affected lung. Muscle characteristics in standardbreds of different ages and sexes. Biopsy samples were taken from the middle gluteal muscle in 107 health Standardbred horses. The horses were separated according to sex and divided into 4 age groups (1, 2, 3 and 4-6 years). The proportion of Type I fibres increased with age (from 16 to 20%), irrespective of sex. The proportions of Type IIA and IIB fibres varied with age and differed between stallions and mares. Flunixin meglumine blocks frusemide-induced bronchodilation in horses with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Six horses that developed acute airway obstruction (heaves) when housed in a barn and fed poor-quality hay were studied. Airway obstruction was verified by a maximal change in pleural pressure during tidal breathing (delta Pplmax) of at least 15 cmH2O. Characterisation of equine influenza isolates from the 1987 epizootic in India by nucleotide sequencing of the HA1 gene. Two A/Equi-2 (H3N8) isolates were obtained during the 1987 Indian equine influenza epizootic. The sequence of the Ludhiana/87 HA1 gene revealed that this isolate was very similar to recent European and North American isolates of equine influenza. In contrast, the Bhiwani/87 HA1 gene was nearly identical to the Miami/63 prototype H3 sequence. Effect of surgical removal of endometrial cups on concentrations of chorionic gonadotrophin and subsequent fertility in the mare. Seven pregnant mares underwent general anaesthesia, laparotomy, hysterotomy and removal of a 50-day conceptus.
