Relationship between biochemical markers and radiographic scores in the evaluation of the osteoarticular status of Warmblood stallions.
Research in veterinary science    March 18, 2009   Volume 87, Issue 2 319-328 doi: 10.1016/j.rvsc.2009.02.002
Verwilghen D, Busoni V, Gangl M, Franck T, Lejeune JP, Vanderheyden L, Detilleux J, Grulke S, Deberg M, Henrotin Y, Serteyn D.Establishing the osteoarticular status of the horse is often performed by means of radiological screening of the animals. Widespread blood sampling could reveal to be an interesting alternative to this procedure which is time consuming and sometimes technically difficult. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the radiological status of the horses and the levels of biochemical markers of cartilage degradation and synovial inflammation. A specific radiological scoring and classification system was therefore developed and applied on 63 stallions presented for studbook ...
The activity and expression of chitinase in the equine lung and its activity in normal horses and animals with recurrent airway obstruction.
Research in veterinary science    December 21, 2008   Volume 87, Issue 1 20-25 doi: 10.1016/j.rvsc.2008.11.002
Reid CJ, Thompson L, Donnelly S, Deaton CM, Marlin DJ, Carrington SD, Irwin JA.Recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) is a chronic inflammatory condition in equine lung, which may share a common immunological basis with human asthma, in which dysregulated Th2 responses occur. Mammals express chitinases and chitinase-like proteins, two of which are active enzymes, chitotriosidase and acidic mammalian chitinase (AMCase). Both enzymes are upregulated in a range of inflammatory conditions, including asthma. We investigated the activity of chitinase in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from horses with and without RAO in response to organic dust challenges. No significant differences ...

Research in veterinary science    March 11, 2008   Volume 85, Issue 3 605-611 doi: 10.1016/j.rvsc.2008.01.003
Torfason EG, Thorsteinsdóttir L, Torsteinsdóttir S, Svansson V.The horse population in Iceland is a special breed, isolated from other horses for at least 1000 years. This provides an exceptional opportunity to investigate old and new pathogens in an inbred herd with few infectious diseases. We have developed a high sensitivity semi-nested PCR to study equid gammaherpesviruses 2 and 5 (EHV-2 and 5) in Iceland. The first PCR is group specific, the second type-specific, targeting a 113bp sequence in the glyB gene. DNA isolated from white blood cells and 18 different organs was tested for the presence of EHV-2 and 5. This was done in adult horses and foals, ...
Comparison of Fick and thermodilution cardiac output determinations in standing horses.
Research in veterinary science    February 21, 2008   Volume 85, Issue 2 307-314 doi: 10.1016/j.rvsc.2007.10.013
Lépiz ML, Keegan RD, Bayly WM, Greene SA, McEwen MM.The Fick and thermodilution (TD) methods are two currently popular techniques for determination of cardiac output (CO) in adult horses. To our knowledge, a comparison of these two techniques has not been reported. Six healthy, resting, fit, adult horses of either sex and weighing 516.5+/-33.2 kg (mean+/-SD) were instrumented to enable measurement of cardiac output. Resting CO was determined by the Fick method and by thermodilution while the horses stood quietly in the stocks. Fick and thermodilution CO measurements were repeated under conditions of increased cardiac output achieved with the us...

Respirable dust concentrations in equine stables. Part 1: validation of equipment and effect of various management systems.
Research in veterinary science    May 2, 2007   Volume 83, Issue 2 256-262 doi: 10.1016/j.rvsc.2006.12.002
Clements JM, Pirie RS.Traditional methods of measuring airborne dust concentrations (ADC) in animal housing have included the collection of dust onto pre-weighed filters permitting the calculation of mean, not maximum, ADC. However real-time continuous particle monitors are advantageous in identifying short duration elevations in ADC which may be detrimental to equine respiratory health in the face of a relatively low mean ADC. These monitors have not previously been used to measure ADC in equine stables. Comparisons of a filter-based sampler and a real-time continuous particle monitor revealed no significant diffe...
Respirable dust concentrations in equine stables. Part 2: the benefits of soaking hay and optimising the environment in a neighbouring stable.
Research in veterinary science    April 30, 2007   Volume 83, Issue 2 263-268 doi: 10.1016/j.rvsc.2006.12.003
Clements JM, Pirie RS.The effect of soaking hay to minimise equine breathing zone respirable dust concentration (RDC) is unknown, as is the duration of soaking required. Additionally, the influence of the bedding and forage used in one stable on the mean and maximum RDC in a neighbouring stable within a common airspace is unknown. Consequently, in the management of equine environmental respiratory disease uncertainty remains about the necessity for optimising conditions in neighbouring stables. Investigations using a real-time continuous particle monitor revealed that when feeding hay, horses' mean breathing zone R...
