Prevalence of antibodies to equine viruses in the Netherlands.
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    April 15, 1979   Volume 104, Issue 8 65-74
de Boer GF, Osterhaus AD, van Oirschot JT, Wemmenhove R.The prevalence of antibodies to various viruses was investigated in a series of serum samples collected from horses in the Netherlands between 1963 and 1966 and from 1972 onwards. Neutralizing antibodies to equine rhinopneumonitis virus, equine arteritis virus and to equine rhinovirus types 1 and 2 were detected in respectively 76%, 14%, 66% and 59% of the equine serum samples tested. The observed incidence of serum samples positive to equine adenovirus in the complement fixation test was 39%. Precipitating antibodies to equine infectious anaemia virus were detected only in serum samples from ...

[Studies on the bacterial causes of neonatal mortality in foals. Report on post-mortem findings (author’s transl)].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    February 15, 1979   Volume 104, Issue 4 165-177
van der Molen EJ.The causes of neonatal mortality in foals were studied over a period of two years. The total number of foals studied was 121. Bacterial infection was found to be an important factor. Infection caused by A. equuli (1.6%) which previously was the most important one, has been superseded by E. coli infection (56%). E. coli infections particularly occur during the first weeks of life and, depending on the course of the disease, give rise to various pathological changes. Infections running an acute course are mainly marked by pathological changes of the lung and lymphoid organs. Infections running a...
[Morphology of live and dead spermatozoa of stallions (author’s transl)].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    December 1, 1978   Volume 103, Issue 23 1277-1283
Hendrikse J, van der Holst W, Best AP.Examination of 539 ejaculates of stallions of various breeds showed that approximately 60 per cent of the spermatozoa were completely normal morphologically. Of these morphologically normal spermatozoa, 13 per cent were dead. The total proportion of live spermatozoa was 75 per cent, 32 per cent being obviously abnormal (22 per cent of live and 10 per cent of dead spermatozoa). Separated heads (normal as well as abnormal) were significantly more common among dead spermatozoa. Protoplasmic droplets (both at the neck and at the end of the middle piece) were mainly present in live spermatozoa. As ...

[Effectiveness of coumaphos against chorioptes bovis in a horse with foot-mange (author’s transl)].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    April 1, 1978   Volume 103, Issue 7 377-380
Boersema JH.A horse with foot-mange failed to recover following a number of courses of treatment with coumaphos. Mites isolated from this horse were tested in vitro for their sensitivity to coumaphos and lindane. The mites were resistant to coumaphos and sensitive to lindane. Following treatment with lindane, the horse recovered within four weeks.

Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    April 1, 1978   Volume 103, Issue 7 355-360
Mirck MH, Franken P.Experimental infections using 600,000 infective larvae of Strongyloides westeri were carried out in seven worm-free Shetland ponies, four foals and thee yearlings. In the foals, the prepatent period varied from ten to fourteen days, the patent period ranging from forty-three to eighty-three days. Within approximately two months after infection, a decrease in the concentration of haemoglobin and an increase in the beta-globulin fraction of the protein pattern of the serum, practically coinciding with the maximum S. westeri faecal egg counts, were recorded. In the yearlings, the prepatent period...
[Veterinary and clinical experience of the use of a beta2-receptor-stimulating sympathicomimetic agent (NAB 365) in horses with respiratory discase (author’s transl)].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    November 1, 1977   Volume 102, Issue 21 1233-1238
Sasse HH, Hajer R.The manufacturers state that NAB 365 is a beta2-receptor-stimulating sympathicomimetic agent. According to the medical literature it combines a bronchial antispasmodic effect with certain bronchia secretolytic properties and has few untoward side-effects on, for instance, the heart and intestine. The effectiveness of administration of NAB 365 in horses with chronic or acute respiratory disease was tested in the Department of Veterinary Internal medicine in Utrecht. NAB 365 administered at a dosage of 0.8 gamma/kg, of body weight was found to have a marked bronchodilative effect in horses. Ther...
Studies on a number of erythrocytic enzymes and intermediate products of equine erythrocyte metabolism.
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    October 15, 1977   Volume 102, Issue 20 1197-1203
Franken P, Schotman JH.The activities and concentrations of a number of erythrocytic enzymes and intermediate products of erythrocyte metabolism were determined in twenty-one normal standard-bred horses which were studied clinically and biochemically. These studies showed that equine anaerobic glycolysis is characterized by a biochemical pattern similar to that observed in human PK deficiency. The greater sensitivity of equine haemoglobin to oxidants is attributable either to low stability of GSH, which may be due either to the low activity of GR or that of 6PGD as observed in the studies. In addition, the saturatio...
[Strongyloides westeri Ihle, 1917 (Nematoda: Strongyloididae). I. Parasitological features of natural infection (author’s transl)].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    September 1, 1977   Volume 102, Issue 17 1039-1043
Mirck MH.Patent S. westeri infection is particularly common in unweaned foals (61.2 per cent). It is much less common in foals which have been weaned (15.4 per cent). Examination of the faeces of ten artificially reared foals (free from worms) did not supply any evidence of possible prenatal (intra-uterine) helminth infection. In one Shetland pony mare, larvae of S. westeri were found to be present in the milk on the tenth, twenty-fourth and thirty-second day after parturition. Larvae were not detected in the milk of the other mares but all foals showed patent S. westeri infection within from thirteen ...
[Results obtained using various types of suture material in laparotomy and the treatment of umbilical hernia in horses (author’s transl)].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    August 15, 1977   Volume 102, Issue 16 969-974
Bras GE, Kersjes AW.Comparative studies were done on healing of the wound following laparotomy through the ventral wall of the abdomen (paramedian incision or in the linea alba) in seventy horses and following surgical treatment of umbilical hernia in eighty-five (young) horses, in which perlon, (chromic) catgut, stainless steel wire and polyglycollic acid were used as suture material. Though with some reserve, as the study was concerned with the comparison of findings in clinical cases in which a number of conditions may vary, it is concluded that steel wire and polyglycollic acid are preferable to perlon and (c...
[Cyathostominosis: a form of severe strongylidosis (author’s transl)].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    August 1, 1977   Volume 102, Issue 15 876-878
Mirck MH.A form of strongyle infection in young horses and ponies, observed during the period from November to May, is described. Large numbers of larvae of Cyathostominae in the fourth or early fifth stage of development are found to be present in the (often watery) faeces. This excretion of larvae is not affected by treatment with anthelmintics. A large number of these patients die from the sequelae of verminous enteritis.
The influence of chlormadinone acetate treatment on the concentration of some steroids in the blood, on the ovarian activity, and on the sexual behaviour of the mare.
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    July 15, 1977   Volume 102, Issue 14 805-816
Nitschelm D, van der Horst CJ.The effect of orally administered chlormadinone acetate (CAP), 10 mg daily for a period of 16 days, was investigated in the case of four mares with an irregular oestrous pattern accompanied by low ovarian activity (group 1), four mares which did not show oestrous symptoms at all and which had also low ovarian activity (group 2), and two ovariectomized and two ovario-hysterectomized mares (group 3). In all mares of group 1 and in the two ovariectomized mares of group 3 oestrus symptoms became apparent during treatment. Two mares of group 2 came into heat 8 and 11 days after the cessation of tre...
Acyclicity and dyscyclicity in mares.
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    January 15, 1977   Volume 102, Issue 2 86-105
Van Leeuwen W.Two trotter stud farms were visited on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during 1972 and 1973. A total of 356 mares were bored on these farms during these breeding seasons. There were 194 nursing, 113 barren, and 49 maiden mares. Of the 356 mares, 78 (21.9%) had functional disorders of the ovaries at one time or another. The functional disorders consisted of: 27 anoestrous mares after early embryonic death, 20 with low ovarian activity, 19 with multifollicular ovaries, and 12 mares with persistent corpora lutea. The following therapies were used: (a) 1000 I.U. PMSG i.v. + 10 mg stilboestrol i.m...
[Influenza vaccination: which vaccine (author’s transl)].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    December 1, 1976   Volume 101, Issue 23 1321-1322
Verberne LR, Mirck MH.A comparative study of the literature of the past ten years showed that vaccination of horses and ponies against influenza is best done using adjuvant-containing vaccines. Comparable results may probably be obtained by twice inoculating an aquenous vaccine. There are no drawbacks to the use of aluminium-hydroxide as an adjuvant when mineral oil is used as an adjuvant, the first and second vaccinations do not present any problems.

Some steroids in the blood of mares suffering from endometritis and post-partum mares as compared to normal cycling mares.
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    October 15, 1976   Volume 101, Issue 20 1154-1162
Nitschelm D, van der Horst CJ.It appeared that in mares suffering from endometritis the concentrations of pregnenolone, of the compound "5.4", and of progesterone in the blood during the first 2 days of the heat period were significantly higher than in normal cycling mares, in which the concentrations of all steroids were less than or equal to 1 ng/ml. In five endometritis mares the "5.4" and progesterone concentrations decreased after the first days of the heat period, and at about two days before ovulation the values were comparable to those of normal cycling mares. Eight mares suffering from a severe endometritis did no...
[Review of the incidence of antibodies to various serological groups of the species Leptospira interrogans in a number of farm animals in the Netherlands (author’s transl)].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    August 1, 1976   Volume 101, Issue 15 835-848
Hill WK, Weenink-Van Loon CD.Report on the results of serological studies on the species Leptospira interrogans in cattle (19,607), swine (6,348), dogs (182) and horses (88) from the Netherlands during the period from 1969 to 1974. Living cultures of the serotypes of pomona, icterohaemorrhagiae, canicola, guidae (Tarassovi serological group), grippotyphosa and sejroe were used as antigen in the micro-agglutination test. The numerical findings showed that antibodies to serotypes of the species Leptospira interrogans were present in 7.67 per cent of the cattle, 22.21 per cent of the pigs, 36.81 per cent of the dogs and 92.0...
The influence of taking uterine biopsies on the concentration of some steroids in the blood and in the uterus, on the ovarian activity, and on the sexual behaviour of the mare.
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    July 15, 1976   Volume 101, Issue 14 796-804
Nitschelm D, Van der Horst CJ.It has been shown that stimulation of the uterus of mares by the daily taking of biopsies can result in the occurrence of oestrous symptoms. This is accompanied by some follicular growth and a progesterone content in the blood often higher than 1 ng/ml. The following observations suggest that this progesterone originates in the uterus and not in the ovaries: (1) no active corpora lutea appeared to be present in the ovaries after ovariectomy, (2) ovariectomized mares showed the same oestrous symptoms in similar experiments and even mating took place, (3) in the uterine biopsies the concentratio...

Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    March 15, 1976   Volume 101, Issue 6 310-312
Gruys E, Kok HA, Van Der Werff YD.Post-morten examination of a fourteen-year-old mare of the Gelderland breed, which had been treated for severe dyspnoea and had subsequenlty died, revealed the presence of haemothorax, atelectasis of the lung and a metastasized haemangiosarcoma of the left ovary. The haemothorax could have resulted from rupture of one of the metastases.
Hormonal pattern in the blood of eight mares during the first weeks of pregnancy.
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    January 15, 1976   Volume 101, Issue 2 83-89
Nitschelm D, Van der Horst CJ.The hormonal pattern in the blood of eight mares was studied during the first 5 to 6 weeks of pregnancy; in two of the eight animals early embryonic death was established on D-28 and on D-40, respectively. Progesterone peaks were found in the blood around D-5, D-12 to D-10, and D-17 to D-18. It is suggested that the decrease of the progesterone concentrations in the blood during the intermediate periods is due to the action of oestrogens. During the period from D-18 to about D-34 the concentrations both of progesterone and of pregnenolone were low in the pregnant mares. Thereafter a small incr...
[Preliminary performance test in saddle horses (author’s transl)].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    December 1, 1975   Volume 100, Issue 23 1259-1267
van der Mey GJ, Bos H.The study of the literature on a preliminary performance test for saddle horses (stallions) is concerned with European countries. Interest is found to be increasing in the various countries. Performance of the test in the Netherlands (since 1966) is described and the various criteria of evaluation are discussed in detail. The intensity of selection based on this test is referred to. In 1974, it was 78 per cent in the Netherlands. Part of studies on the relationship between some results of testing are reviewed. The traction test shows a very low coefficient of correlation with the other parts o...
