Veterinarians from throughout the USA were enrolled in a surveillance programme and were asked to collect blood and nasal secretions from equine cases with acute infectious upper respiratory tract disease and/or acute onset of neurological disease. A questionn...
Effects of soaking on the water-soluble carbohydrate and crude protein content of hay.
The Veterinary record    June 7, 2011   Volume 168, Issue 23 618 doi: 10.1136/vr.d157
Longland AC, Barfoot C, Harris PA.The aim of this study was to determine the amounts of water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC), WSC constituents and protein leached from a range of U.K. hays soaked according to common practice. Initial hay WSC content ranged from 123 to 230 g/kg dry matter (DM). Soaking the hays for up to 16 hours in water at a mean temperature of 8°C resulted in a mean loss of 27 per cent (range 6 to 54 per cent) of hay WSC. The mean percentage losses of WSC constituents were 24 per cent (range 14 to 31) for fructan, 41 per cent (range 21 to 70) for fructose, 45 per cent (range 28 to 100) for sucrose and 56 per ce...

The Veterinary record    April 18, 2011   Volume 168, Issue 18 483 doi: 10.1136/vr.d731
Allison K, Taylor NM, Wilsmore AJ, Garforth C.An online survey was conducted to establish horse owners' beliefs, attitudes and practices relating to the use of anthelmintic drugs. Out of a total of 574 respondents, 89 per cent described themselves as 'leisure riders', most of whom took part in a variety of activities including eventing, show jumping, dressage, hunter trials, hunting, driving, endurance and showing. Overall, respondents were generally aware and concerned about the issue of anthelmintic resistance. Less than 60 per cent of all respondents were comfortable with their existing anthelmintic programme, and 25 per cent would lik...

The Veterinary record    March 4, 2011   Volume 168, Issue 12 326 doi: 10.1136/vr.c6168
O'Neill HD, Bladon BM.Records of horses admitted to a veterinary surgery in the UK for lameness investigation during 2000 to 2008 were reviewed. Twenty-one horses were identified with both scintigraphic and radiological evidence of enostosis-like lesions (ELLs), in which 68 individual foci of increased radiopharmaceutical uptake were confirmed in 57 long bones. The presenting lameness was attributed to ELLs in 15 of 21 (71 per cent) horses; the remainder were thought to be incidental findings. Five horses were subjected to a repeat examination, four of which showed the occurrence of new lesions in the same or diffe...
