Comparison of systolic cardiac function before and after treatment of atrial fibrillation in horses with and without additional cardiac valve insufficiencies. Clinical, electrocardiographic and echocardiographic examinations were conducted before therapy and 4 days after conversion to normal sinus rhythm in 15 horses with a history of atrial fibrillation of 2-6 months duration. Seven horses showed no other signs of cardiac disease. Four horses suffered additionally from mitral valve insufficiency, while six horses had aortic valve insufficiency, including two of the four horses with mitral valve insufficiency, but none had signs of congestive heart failure. Doppler echocardiographic estimates of various variables were made for assessment of systolic...
Comparative pharmacokinetics of diphenhydramine in camels and horses after intravenous administration. The pharmacokinetics of diphenhydramine (DPHM) was compared in camels (n = 8) and horses (n = 6) following intravenous (i.v.) administration of a dose of 0.625 mg/kg body weight. In addition, the metabolism and urinary detection time of DPHM was evaluated in camels. The data obtained (median and range in brackets) in camels and horses, respectively, were as follows. The terminal elimination half lives (h) were 1.58 (1.13-2.58) and 6.11 (4.80-14.1), and the total body clearances (L/h per kg) were 1.42 (1.13-1.74) and 0.79 (0.66-0.90). The volumes of distribution at steady state (L/kg) were 2.38...
The use of electrocardiographic recording with Holter monitoring during treadmill exercise to evaluate cardiac arrhythmias in racehorses. The research examines the use of Holter monitoring combined with treadmill exercise to better understand and diagnose cardiac arrhythmias in racehorses. This technology provides a comprehensive view of the horse’s […]
Variations in some electrocardiographic parameters in the trotter during racing and training. In the athletic horse, the efficiency of physical exercise during activity is strictly
connected to several organic–functional characteristics. Among these, cardiovascular
function takes a primary role in determining the quality of performance. The morphological and functional changes occurring in the cardiovascular system during physical
exercise are due to the increasing demand required to deal with intense muscular
activity. Thus, the cardiovascular physiological response to physical exercise is characterized both by transitory modifications and adjustments that are similar in both

Evaluations of testicular biopsy by tru-cut in the stallion. Testicular biopsy is one of the supplementary examinations performed in the course
of andrological testing. In veterinary medicine, it is seldom used in low-fertility or
sterility testing, or in the investigation of suspected cancer. Biopsies are discouraged
in horses in particular, since they may result in testicular sclerosis and atrophy

Evaluation of stress during transport. Domestic animals are transported for a variety of reasons including breeding, biomedical purposes, slaughter and, in the case of sporting horses, for competitions, pleasure activities or ceremonial proceedings. Studies to determine the amount of stress on farm animals during transport often have highly variable results and are difficult to interpret. The reaction of animals to stressors depends on the duration and intensity of the stressors, the animal's previous experience, its physiological status and the immediate environmental restraints. Behavioural, haematological, haematochemical, physi...
Comparison of in vitro methods and faecal egg count reduction test for the detection of benzimidazole resistance in small strongyles of horses. The objective of the study was to compare the in vitro egg hatch test (EHT), larval development test (LDT) and in vivo faecal egg count reduction test (FECR test) for the detection of benzimidazole resistance in equine strongyles. The presence of resistant or susceptible strongyle populations was determined in 25 stud farms using the in vivo FECR test and in vitro EHT. On the basis of the FECR values, resistance to fenbendazole was detected on 15 of the 25 farms (60%). The ED50 value (anthelmintic concentration producing 50% inhibition of hatching) for suspected resistant populations varied fr...
Muscarinic receptors in equine airways. The distribution of muscarinic receptors in equine airways was investigated using autoradiography. Frozen sections of tissue from six different levels in the bronchial tree, from the trachea to the distal bronchioles, were incubated in vitro with 1.5 nmol/L of the muscarinic receptor antagonist 1-[N-methyl-3H]scopolamine methyl chloride (3H-NMS). In addition, the subtype pattern of muscarinic receptors was investigated in equine tracheal smooth muscle using radioligand binding with methoctramine, tripinamidc, 4-DAMP-methiodide and pirenzipine as competitors against the binding of 1.3 nmol/L 3H...
Differences in pulmonary functional indices derived from the single-breath diagram for CO2 (SBD-CO2) in horses related to age, sex and usage. Although pulmonary function tests have been used to evaluate horses with clinically normal lungs and those with recurrent airway obstruction (RAO), comprehensive studies of equine respiratory function, considering factors such as sex, age and usage are not available. Studies on the influence of these factors on pulmonary function in healthy horses are required for interpretation of measurements made in those with respiratory disease. The study was performed with 63 warmblood horses and the status of their pulmonary health was evaluated by clinical examination. The functional aspect of pulmonar...
Endometrial tissue concentrations of enrofloxacin after intrauterine administration to mares. Endometritis in mares is a common cause of infertility. Conventional treatments of the disease have mostly been unsuccessful, so new therapeutic alternatives need to be investigated. This study evaluated the uterine disposition and plasma pharmacokinetic behaviour of a commercial formulation of enrofloxacin (EFX) given by the intrauterine (i.u.) route (2.5 mg/kg) in healthy mares. In order to evaluate the uterine inflammatory response, an initial histopathological study assessing polymorphonuclear cell infiltration was carried out in 20 mares over a 14-day period after treatment. In a second s...
Simultaneous flow cytometric analysis of phagocytosis and oxidative burst activity in equine leukocytes. This paper describes a method for simultaneously measuring phagocytosis and oxidative burst activity in equine peripheral blood leukocytes by flow cytometry. Opsonized propidium iodide-labelled Staphylococcus aureus (PI-Sa) was used to measure the uptake of bacteria by equine phacocytes and the oxidative burst activity by oxidation of dihydrorhodamine 123. The requirements to achieve optimal activity of phagocytosis and oxidative burst are described. The advantage of the simultaneous technique is that it provides both independent and comparative values for phagocytosis and the oxidative burst,...
Activities of enzymes related to the malate-aspartate shuttle in the blood cells of thoroughbred horses undergoing training exercise. The activities of the enzymes related to the malate-aspartate shuttle, which convert cytosolic NADH into mitochondrial NADH, were measured in red and white blood cells from thoroughbred horses undergoing continuous training (race horses) and compared with those in blood cells from riding horses. The activities of malate dehydrogenase (MDH), a rate-limiting enzyme for the malate-aspartate shuttle, were significantly elevated in the white blood cells (WBC) from race horses compared with those from riding horses. There were no significant differences in the activities of the enzymes in the red bl...
Influence of plasma proteins on erythrocyte aggregation in three mammalian species. The aggregation capacity of human erythrocytes lies between that of the non-aggregating bovine erythrocytes and the remarkably aggregating equine ones. As the ability to aggregate is attributed to cell factors and the composition of the plasma proteins, the role that plasma proteins play in the aggregation process in these three species was studied. Washed erythrocytes were suspended in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS; pH 7.4, 300 mOsm/L) plus polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in a suitable concentration to obtain an average intensity of aggregation (control media). The superimposed effect of replacin...
Demonstration of heterogeneous genotypes of Taylorella equigenitalis isolated from horses in six European countries by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Forty-six isolates of Taylorella equigenitalis were analysed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) after separate digestion of the genomic DNA with ApaI and with NotI. The isolates had been obtained from horses in six European countries and were classified into 18 genotypes. In Belgium, 2 genotypes were detected in 2 isolates, in England 9 among 15, in Finland 2 in 2, in France 2 among 10, in Sweden 3 among 5, and in Switzerland 3 among 12. Two English isolates and 4 French isolates gave identical PFGE profiles to those of Kentucky 188 from the United States. A common genotype was found i...
Inhibition of nitric oxide synthase with L-NAME does not increase lactate production at rest or during short-term high-intensity exercise in Thoroughbred horses. The present study was carried out to determine whether inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) synthase promotes anaerobic metabolism in exercising horses, resulting in a significantly increased blood lactate concentration. N(omega)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) is a potent inhibitor of NO synthase that has been tested in horses and other species. Two sets of experiments, namely placebo (saline control) and L-NAME (20 mg/kg, i.v.) studies, were carried out on seven healthy, sound, exercise-trained, Thoroughbred horses in random order, 6 to 7 days apart. In both experiments, an incremental exe...
The variability and repeatability of indices derived from the single-breath diagram for CO2 in horses with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and the effect of lobelin hydrochloride on these indices. Several indices of ventilatory heterogeneity can be identified from the volumetric capnogram and its graphic presentation, the single-breath diagram for CO2 (SBD-CO2). Physiologically based indices of pulmonary function (VTE, VCO2, FACO2, VDBohr% VDBohr%, VD/VTE, A1/A2) were calculated for healthy horses (group I, n = 5) and for horses with subclinical (group II, n = 7) or clinically manifest chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (group III, n = 8) during tidal breathing and after medication with lobelin hydrochloride (Lobelin). We investigated the variability and repeatability of the l...
Comparison of the value of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, random amplified polymorphic DNA and amplified rDNA restriction analysis for subtyping Taylorella equigenitalis. Eight strains of Taylorella equigenitalis were identified by a polymerase chain reaction using a primer pair specific to the 16S rDNA of T equigenitalis. These eight strains were chosen because they had previously been shown to represent eight distinct genotypes by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis analysis after separate digestion of the genomic DNA with ApaI or NotI. The eight strains could be classified into six or seven types by random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis using different kinds of primers. Amplified rDNA restriction analysis after separate digestion with five restriction enzym...
