Pharmacokinetics, stability, and retrospective analysis of use of an oral gel formulation of the bovine injectable enrofloxacin in horses.
Veterinary therapeutics : research in applied veterinary medicine    October 7, 2004   Volume 5, Issue 2 155-167
Epstein K, Cohen N, Boothe D, Nieuwoudt C, Chandler J.In many cases of equine infectious disease, long-term administration of antimicrobial drugs is required. Oral agents are preferred because of the relative ease of administration compared with other routes. Enrofloxacin has been shown to be effective against a variety of equine pathogens, but oral administration of this drug has proved difficult in horses. An oral gel formulation made from the injectable cattle product produces blood levels sufficient to resolve infections caused by a variety of common equine pathogens.
Eye infections due to Listeria monocytogenes in three cows and one horse. Evans K, Smith M, McDonough P, Wiedmann M.A retrospective study was conducted to determine case histories, microbiological characteristics, and molecular subtypes associated with Listeria monocytogenes infections of the eye in large animals. For selected cases, environmental L. monocytogenes contamination patterns on case farms were also evaluated to probe for potential sources and spread of listerial eye infections. Records of 170 L. monocytogenes isolates from animal infections were reviewed to determine the fraction of isolates associated with eye infections (conjunctivitis, keratitis, and uveitis) of animals and to gather informat...

Interrelationships among follicles during the common-growth phase of a follicular wave and capacity of individual follicles for dominance in mares.
Reproduction (Cambridge, England)    September 30, 2004   Volume 128, Issue 4 417-422 doi: 10.1530/rep.1.00259
Gastal EL, Gastal MO, Beg MA, Ginther OJ.The changing diameter interrelationships among follicles during the interval from emergence to deviation (common-growth phase) were studied in 59 mares. All follicles of > or =6.0 mm were ablated 10 days after ovulation. The four largest follicles of the postablation wave were ranked D1, D2, D3 and D4 at the expected beginning of deviation (D1 > or = 20.0 mm), according to descending diameter. The four follicles were also ranked independently, according to order of emergence at 6.0-6.9 mm as E1 (first to emerge), E2, E3 and E4. The follicles emerged during 1.3 +/- 0.1 to 3.1 +/- 0.1 days...

Acrylic bite plane for treatment of malocclusion in a young horse.
Journal of veterinary dentistry    September 16, 2004   Volume 21, Issue 2 84-87 doi: 10.1177/089875640402100203
Klugh DO.A 5-month-old quarter horse filly was presented for evaluation of a congenital overbite. The horse was diagnosed with a class 2 malocclusion. A non-removable, acrylic bite plane was constructed to provide a surface for the occlusal forces to be directed in a manner maintaining the normal anatomic position of the premaxilla. The preservation of normal anatomic relationships provided free range of motion of the mandible and maximized its growth potential, limiting the malocclusion. Although normal occlusion was not attained, partial incisor occlusion was present 20-months following initial treat...
Echocardiography and electrocardiography as means to evaluate potential performance in horses.
Journal of veterinary science    September 15, 2004   Volume 5, Issue 3 259-262
Lightowler C, Piccione G, Giudice E, del Olmo GR, Cattaneo ML.Prediction of potential performance is one of the goals of exercise physiology investigations. When Selecting a horse for competition, one of the main objectives is to choose the one that predictably will reveal a competitive aptitude above the average. The horses used in this study underwent a two-dimensional echocardiography study and a conventional 3 leads electrocardiogram. The results show that heart score is not an appropriate index to evaluate the heart size in the horse. On the other hand, there are currently more suitable and accurate procedures such as echocardiography that allow per...

Assessment of Sarcocystis neurona sporocyst viability and differentiation between viable and nonviable sporocysts using propidium iodide stain.
The Journal of parasitology    September 11, 2004   Volume 90, Issue 4 872-875 doi: 10.1645/GE-262R
Elsheikha HM, Mansfield LS.Sarcocystis neurona has become recognized as the major causative agent of equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) in the Americas. At least 3 pathogenic species of Sarcocystis, including S. neurona, can be isolated from opossums. Methods are needed to ascertain whether these isolates are viable and capable of causing infections. In this study, the nuclear stain propidium iodide (PI) was used to differentiate between live (viable) and heat-killed (nonviable) S. neurona sporocysts. PI was excluded by live sporocysts but penetrated compromised sporocyst membrane and stained sporozoite nuclei of ...
Development of recombinant capsid antigen/transmembrane epitope fusion proteins for serological diagnosis of animal lentivirus infections.
Journal of virological methods    September 8, 2004   Volume 121, Issue 1 73-78 doi: 10.1016/j.jviromet.2004.06.001
Rosati S, Profiti M, Lorenzetti R, Bandecchi P, Mannelli A, Ortoffi M, Tolari F, Ciabatti IM.Among animal lentiviruses, Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), Equine infectious anaemia virus (EIAV) and Small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLV) are important pathogens associated with a variety of clinical pictures including immunodeficiency, anaemia, arthritis, pneumonia. The detection of viral antibody response represents a practical diagnostic approach in all lentivirus infections since they remain detectable long life. Capsid antigen (CA) is the major viral core protein and specific antibodies against this antigen are usually first recognised in infected sheep, goat and horse, remaining dete...

Insulin-like growth factors-I and -II and insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-2 in dominant equine follicles during spring transition and the ovulatory season.
Reproduction (Cambridge, England)    August 31, 2004   Volume 128, Issue 3 321-329 doi: 10.1530/rep.1.00100
Watson ED, Bae SE, Thomassen R, Thomson SR, Woad K, Armstrong DG.The period between seasonal anoestrus and cyclicity is characterized in many mares by cyclical growth and regression of large dominant follicles. The insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system plays a key role in follicular growth and regression; therefore, we hypothesized that changes in the IGF system and its binding proteins would modulate onset of cyclicity in mares. Ovaries were obtained from pony mares on the day after detection of an actively growing 30 mm transitional anovulatory follicle, and also at the second or third oestrus of the breeding season on the day after the preovulatory fol...
Effect of teasing, mechanical stimulation and the intrauterine infusion of saline on uterine contractions in mares.
The Veterinary record    August 27, 2004   Volume 155, Issue 4 103-110 doi: 10.1136/vr.155.4.103
Campbell ML, England GC.Uterine motility may have significance for the transportation of spermatozoa and the elimination of the ejaculate and inflammatory products after mares have been covered. The effect of some of the component stimuli of coitus on uterine contractions was investigated by using M-mode ultrasound. The number, amplitude and duration of the uterine contractions of each uterine horn and of the uterine body were measured in oestrous mares for four minutes before and four minutes after teasing by a stallion, mechanical stimulation of the vagina and cervix, the intrauterine infusion of 80 ml of sterile s...

Journal of veterinary internal medicine    August 24, 2004   Volume 18, Issue 4 564-567 doi: 10.1892/0891-6640(2004)182.0.co;2
Saulez MN, Cebra CK, Tornquist SJ.Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is an enzyme present in intestinal mucosa, bile, bone, and renal tubule cells. We sought to assess the diagnostic and prognostic relationships of total ALP (ALPt) activity and that of intestine-derived ALP (ALPi) in serum and peritoneal fluid of 126 horses with colic. ALPt and ALPi activities were measured in both serum and peritoneal fluid by using both standard and L-phenylalanine-based buffers, respectively. Neither ALPt nor ALPi activity were useful in classifying type or severity of intestinal damage. ALPt and ALPi activities in peritoneal fluid were lowest in h...
