DTW. Deutsche tierarztliche Wochenschrift    February 1, 1991   Volume 98, Issue 2 60-63
Karsai F, Szaniszló F, Pethes G.The levels of the two primary bile acids, cholic acid (CA) and chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA), were determined by radioimmunoassay in cattle, horse, pig and dog serum. The mean serum cholic acid (SCA) and deoxycholic acid (SCDCA) levels of cows varied with their reproductive status, being 7.8 (+/- 3.3) and 1.5 (+/- 1.0) mumol/l in dry cows, 17.8 (+/- 6.9) and 2.3 (+/- 1.0) mumol/l in freshly calved dams, and 15.8 (+/- 5.7) and 2.3 (+/- 0.8) mumol/l, respectively, in lactating cows. The SCA level found in the immediate prepartal period and also on the day of calving corresponded to those found du...
Uterine and fetal dynamics during early pregnancy in mares.
American journal of veterinary research    February 1, 1991   Volume 52, Issue 2 298-306
Griffin PG, Ginther OJ.Fetal activity and mobility and changes in diameter of the allantoic fluid compartment in the uterine horns were studied in mares between days 69 and 81 of pregnancy by use of transrectal ultrasonography (n = 12) and transcervical videoendoscopy (n = 8). The insertion tube of the videoendoscope was positioned within the allantoic sac to permit viewing of the fetus and entrance to each uterine horn. Each uterine horn was divided ultrasonographically into 3 segments of equal length, and the horns were designated on the basis of side of umbilical attachment (cord vs noncord horns). The diameter o...
Effect of aspiration of the preovulatory follicle on luteinization, corpus luteum function, and peripheral plasma gonadotropin concentrations in the mare.
Biology of reproduction    February 1, 1991   Volume 44, Issue 2 292-298 doi: 10.1095/biolreprod44.2.292
Hinrichs K, Rand WM, Palmer E.Follicular fluid from small- to medium-sized follicles has been shown to have an inhibiting effect on luteinization of granulosa cells in vitro. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of in vivo removal of follicular fluid on luteinization, peripheral gonadotropin concentrations, and ovulation of secondary follicles in the mare. Follicular fluid was aspirated from the preovulatory follicles of mares when the diameter of the follicle was 30-34 mm (Group A), 35-39 mm (Group B), or 40-44 mm (Group C). Mares in Group D served as controls and the preovulatory follicle was not aspirated....
Effects of increased end-expiratory lung volume on breathing in awake ponies.
Journal of applied physiology (Bethesda, Md. : 1985)    February 1, 1991   Volume 70, Issue 2 715-725 doi: 10.1152/jappl.1991.70.2.715
Brice AG, Forster HV, Pan LG, Lowry TF, Murphy CL, Mead J.We studied the changes in breathing and respiratory muscle electromyograms (EMG) during passively induced increases in end-expiratory lung volume (EELV) in awake normal (N), hilar nerve-denervated (HND), carotid body-denervated (CBD), and HND + CBD ponies. EELV was increased by applying continuous negative pressure (-10 and -20 cmH2O) around the torso of the standing pony. In all groups, negative pressure produced sustained increases in EELV that were linearly related to the degree of negative pressure. Elevated EELV decreased breathing frequency (f) in N and CBD ponies but increased f in HND ...
Different combinations of regulatory elements may explain why placenta-specific expression of the glycoprotein hormone alpha-subunit gene occurs only in primates and horses.
Biology of reproduction    February 1, 1991   Volume 44, Issue 2 231-237 doi: 10.1095/biolreprod44.2.231
Nilson JH, Bokar JA, Clay CM, Farmerie TA, Fenstermaker RA, Hamernik DL, Keri RA.Expression of the glycoprotein hormone alpha-subunit gene occurs in the pituitary of all mammals but in placenta of only primates and horses. In humans, two different elements, termed upstream regulatory element (URE) and cAMP response element (CRE), are required for placenta-specific expression of the alpha-subunit gene. The URE binds a protein unique to placenta whereas the CRE binds a ubiquitous protein. Comparative analysis of the promoter-regulatory region of the alpha-subunit gene from a number of mammals indicates that a functional URE has been retained and suggests the potential for pl...
Effect of increased inspired CO2 on respiratory dead space in ponies.
Journal of applied physiology (Bethesda, Md. : 1985)    February 1, 1991   Volume 70, Issue 2 732-739 doi: 10.1152/jappl.1991.70.2.732
Lowry TF, Forster HV, Forster MA, Murphy CL, Brice AG, Pan LG.The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of elevated inspired CO2 on respiratory dead space (VD) of 12 normal, 8 carotid body-denervated (CBD), 7 hilar nerve-denervated (HND), and 6 CBD+HND ponies. The Fowler technique was used to determine VD on a breath-by-breath basis while the ponies breathed room air and inspired CO2 at 3 and 6%. During room air breathing, tidal volume (VT) and VD were greater in HND ponies than in normal and CBD ponies (P less than 0.05), and VT was less and VD/VT was greater after CBD than before CBD. For all groups. VD, VT, and breathing frequency...
Evolution of placenta-specific gene expression: comparison of the equine and human gonadotropin alpha-subunit genes.
Molecular endocrinology (Baltimore, Md.)    February 1, 1991   Volume 5, Issue 2 243-255 doi: 10.1210/mend-5-2-243
Steger DJ, Altschmied J, Büscher M, Mellon PL.Primate and equine species are thought to be unique among mammals in synthesizing placental gonadotropin glycoprotein hormones. Human chorionic gonadotropin (CG) and equine pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin (PMSG) are produced in placenta by the specific activation of a glycoprotein hormone alpha-subunit gene and a corresponding beta-subunit gene. The evolutionary mechanisms for the apparently independent acquisition of tissue specificity were investigated by cloning the 5' flanking region of the equine alpha-subunit gene and comparing the DNA elements and trans-acting factors involved in pla...

The Journal of veterinary medical science    February 1, 1991   Volume 53, Issue 1 81-86 doi: 10.1292/jvms.53.81
Washizu T, Tomoda I, Kaneko JJ.The fractionation of serum bile acids was performed in the dog, cow, horse, and human by high performance liquid chromatography equipped with an immobilized 3 alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3 alpha-HSD) column. There were significant differences in the bile acid compositions, conjugation patterns and quantities of each bile acid among these animals. Cholic acid was the major primary bile acid in the dog and cow, which constituted 62.9% and 83.5%, respectively, whereas chenodeoxycholic acid was the major acid in the horse and human, which constituted 68.4% and 46.3%, respectively. Taurine ...
[The effects of crude drugs using diuretic on horse kidney (Na+ + K+)-adenosine triphosphatase].
Yakugaku zasshi : Journal of the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan    February 1, 1991   Volume 111, Issue 2 138-145 doi: 10.1248/yakushi1947.111.2_138
Satoh K, Yasuda I, Nagai F, Ushiyama K, Akiyama K, Kano I.In the folk-medicine, several kinds of crude drugs are used as diuretics. Twenty three kinds of diuretic drugs were chosen, and examined for their effects on the horse kidney (Na+ + K+)-adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase), which is an intrinsic enzyme of the plasma membrane and responsible for the active transport of Na+ and K+ across the membrane. Twenty one out of twenty three kinds of ethanol extracts of diuretic drugs inhibited the kidney (Na+ + K+)-ATPase activity. The intensity of the inhibition of these drugs was compared by estimating the amounts of their ethanol extracts which inhibited...

Pulsed radio frequency therapy of experimentally induced arthritis in ponies. Crawford WH, Houge JC, Neirby DT, Di Mino A, Di Mino AA.The effect of pulsed radio frequency therapy (PRFT) was evaluated on seven ponies with no arthritis and in 28 ponies in which arthritis was created using intra-articular amphotericin B to induce synovitis in the right middle carpal joint. The ponies were divided into five treatment and two control groups. Two levels of arthritis were created and two dosage levels of PRFT were evaluated. The effect of PRFT on arthritic and nonarthritic joints was measured by comparing synovial fluid parameters, the degree and duration of lameness, the range of carpal motion, and carpus circumference, for treate...

Nonlinear algorithm for identification of a fiducial marker for various cardiac events. Jiang B, Rugh KS, Hatfield DG, Jiang D, Hahn AW.We report on a nonlinear algorithm which identifies R-wave peaks on the surface electrocardiogram, consistent reference points on the left ventricular pressure waveform and the initiation of the QRS complex on the epicardial electrogram. The algorithm has been used to evaluate data from horses, ponies, dogs and humans at rest and during exercise. It permits rapid, accurate evaluation of data on a beat-by-beat basis even with noisy signals and varying waveform configurations. The algorithm facilitates the acquisition of detailed information previously difficult or impossible to obtain by more c...
Comparison of the microheterogeneity of horse LH and FSH in the pituitary with that secreted into pituitary venous blood at oestrus.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1991   Volume 44 1-11
Shand N, Alexander SL, Irvine CH.For aqueous extracts of pituitary glands of oestrous mares, luteinizing hormone (LH) profiles were found to be similar to each other and to earlier work after chromatofocussing (CF) and isoelectricfocussing (IEF). After CF, both LH and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in pituitary extracts focussed in multiple peaks in the acidic range, with 86% of LH and 80% of FSH found between pH 4 and 6. By contrast, in pituitary venous plasma, only 18% of the LH focussed in this range, whereas a significantly greater proportion (P less than 0.01) eluted above pH 7 than occurred in pituitary extracts (37...

Journal of reproduction and fertility    January 1, 1991   Volume 91, Issue 1 155-164 doi: 10.1530/jrf.0.0910155
Monfort SL, Arthur NP, Wildt DE.Immunoreactive urinary oestrogen conjugates were assessed in daily urine samples (approximately 5 samples/week) collected from 8 Przewalski's mares maintained under semi-free-ranging pasture conditions. The relative percentage contributions of immunoreactive urinary oestrogens during different reproductive stages (oestrus, luteal phase, early, mid- and late gestation) were determined using high-pressure liquid chromatography. In general, conjugated forms of oestrone (oestrone sulphate and oestrone glucuronide) were the major excreted immunoreactive oestrogens in nonpregnant and pregnant Przewa...
[CEA test in domestic animals].
Schweizer Archiv fur Tierheilkunde    January 1, 1991   Volume 133, Issue 7 311-313
Hässig M, Casal M, Von Beust B, Nussbaumer M, Rüsch P.In human cancer treatment, CEA (carcino embryonic antigen) testing is a routine procedure, even though the test is of low sensitivity (40%) and low specificity (70%). Since tests with polyclonal antibodies render no reproducible results with animal sera, the applicability of a recently available monoclonal CEA test designed for human sera was evaluated. We were able to show that the latter test was of supplemental diagnostic value when testing animal sera. The upper normal limit for dogs is 1.65 ng/ml, for cats 2.81 ng/ml, for cows 2.85 ng/ml, for sheep 2.85 ng/ml and for horses 1.61 ng/ml.

Veterinary research communications    January 1, 1991   Volume 15, Issue 2 107-116 doi: 10.1007/BF00405142
Delbeke FT, Debackere M.A high pressure liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method for measuring the theobromine content in cocoa husks, pelleted food and horse urine is described. Starting with 2 ml of urine, concentrations of 500 ng/ml could easily be detected. When feed containing 38.4 mg of theobromine was given twice daily to horses for 2 1/2 days, two days were needed after the last intake before the theobromine concentrations fell below the threshold value of 2 micrograms/ml. The time at which the peak excretion rate occurred varied from 2 to 12 h after the last administration, while the excretion rate seemed to be ...
Lung contains an inhibitor for nicotinatemononucleotide pyrophosphorylase (carboxylating) of NAD biosynthesis.
Life sciences    January 1, 1991   Volume 48, Issue 3 253-259 doi: 10.1016/0024-3205(91)90352-c
Seither RL, Brown OR, Babu BV.Rat, cow and foal lung extracts contained an inhibitor for the liver NAD biosynthetic-pathway enzyme, nicotinatemononucleotide pyrophosphorylase (carboxylating) [EC 2.4.2.19]. The inhibitor was not dialyzable, was labile at 100 degrees C, was retained by a 30,000 dalton pore size Amicon membrane and, when partially purified by precipitation at 40-100% ammonium sulfate, inhibited the enzyme stoichiometrically. Lung reportedly does not contain nicotinate-mononucleotide pyrophosphorylase or make NAD de novo. However, the inhibitor would mask detection of the enzyme in lung extracts. We detected a...
Effect of sexual arousal on gonadotrophin-releasing hormone, luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone secretion in the stallion.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1991   Volume 44 135-143
Irvine CH, Alexander SL.In an experiment conducted late in the physiological breeding season, 5 stallions were fitted with indwelling pituitary venous cannulae that permitted unobtrusive collection of blood coming from the pituitary and the hypothalamo-hypophyseal portal vessels. The next day, blood samples were collected at 5 min intervals for several hours while the stallions were resting. Pulses of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) occurred approximately once per hour. After this, an oestrous mare was brought into contact with each stallion for ...
Inheritance of the equine Tf F3 allele.
Animal genetics    January 1, 1991   Volume 22, Issue 2 187-190 doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2052.1991.tb00662.x
Cothran EG, Henney PJ, King JA.The inheritance of the equine Tf F3 allele was examined in 39 parent-offspring combinations. For 26 of the cases the allele inherited by the offspring from the heterozygous parent could be determined. The proportion of individuals that inherited the F3 variant compared to the alternative allele was exactly 1:1. In five cases the parental phenotype was identical to that of the offspring. For the remaining eight cases the parent was homozygous for the F3 allele and all offspring had the F3 allele. The results were consistent with Mendelian inheritance.
Triglyceride, insulin, and cortisol responses of ponies to fasting and dexamethasone administration.
Journal of veterinary internal medicine    January 1, 1991   Volume 5, Issue 1 15-22 doi: 10.1111/j.1939-1676.1991.tb00925.x
Freestone JF, Wolfsheimer KJ, Ford RB, Church G, Bessin R.Ponies were evaluated for their response to feed withholding and exogenous administration of corticosteroids (dexamethasone 0.04 mg/kg intramuscular [IM]) in an attempt to reproduce the hyperlipemia syndrome. Because insulin resistance has been associated with hyperlipemia, all ponies were initially evaluated for insulin response to an oral glucose load and normal dexamethasone suppression of serum cortisol. Four ponies were identified as hyperinsulinemic reflecting insulin resistance. All ponies had suppressed cortisol concentrations following dexamethasone administration. Feed withdrawal res...
In vitro and in vivo studies of equine prolactin secretion throughout the year.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1991   Volume 44 27-35
Evans MJ, Alexander SL, Irvine CH, Livesey JH, Donald RA.In vitro, the prolactin response of perifused anterior pituitary cells of horses to thyrotrophin-releasing hormone (TRH) (0.1, 1.0, 10 and 100 nM), correlated significantly with hours of daylight (P less than 0.01). Baseline concentrations of prolactin also were significantly correlated with daylength (P less than 0.01). When response and baseline data were fitted by nonlinear least squares to a cosine function, the circannual phase was -0.06072 (+/- 0.02170) and -0.05560 (+/- 0.0255), respectively, which are not significantly different from that of daylength. In vivo, prolactin secretion was ...

Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1991   Volume 44 405-410
Pruitt JA, Forrest DW, Burghardt RC, Evans JW, Kraemer DC.The viability and ultrastructure of equine embryos were assessed following culture in a static or perifusion system. The percentage change in diameter was greater (P less than 0.025) for embryos in the static treatment (71%) than in the perifusion treatment (33%). Fluorescein diacetate (FD) scores, the percentage of fluorescing cells (FC) and fluorescent intensity (FI), also were greater (P less than 0.05 and P less than 0.01) following static culture than for embryos cultured in the perifusion system. Four of 9 control embryos resulted in pregnancies but no embryos cultured in either system p...
Lodgement of the equine blastocyst in the uterus from fixation through endometrial cup formation.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1991   Volume 44 427-438
Enders AC, Liu IK.The equine blastocyst becomes fixed in position in the uterus on approximately Day 16 of gestation, but allantochorionic villi are not formed until about Day 50. The purpose of this study was to examine evidence that the blastocyst is orientated during this time period, and to determine what morphological features might assist retention of the position of the blastocyst within the uterus. Implantation sites were collected on Days 10-42 of gestation, and the reproductive tracts perfused with fixative for light and electron microscopic examination. The conceptus is found at the bend of a uterine...
