Animal immunodeficiency viruses.
Veterinary microbiology    November 1, 1992   Volume 33, Issue 1-4 311-331 doi: 10.1016/0378-1135(92)90059-3
Egberink H, Horzinek MC.Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) has morphological, physical and biochemical characteristics similar to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the cause of AIDS in man. However, it is antigenically and genetically distinct from HIV; an antigenic relatedness with equine infectious anaemia virus has been demonstrated. FIV has been molecularly cloned and sequenced. Diagnostic tests are commercially available and attempts at preparing inactivated, subunit and molecularly engineered vaccines are being made in different laboratories. During FIV infection a transient primary illness can be recognized...
Measurement of the cytotoxic effects of different strains of Mycoplasma equigenitalium on the equine uterine tube using a calmodulin assay.
Canadian journal of veterinary research = Revue canadienne de recherche veterinaire    October 1, 1992   Volume 56, Issue 4 331-338
Bermúdez VM, Miller RB, Rosendal S, Fernando MA, Johnson WH, O'Brien PJ.The cytopathic effects induced by five strains of Mycoplasma equigenitalium for cells of equine uterine tube explants were tested by measuring changes in cellular and extracellular concentrations of calmodulin (CaM). Calmodulin concentrations in samples of total homogenate (TH) and total homogenate supernates (THS) of the infected equine uterine tube explants were significantly lower than respective measurements on noninfected controls. In tissue culture medium fractions (TCM) of some infected explants, CaM concentrations were significantly higher than noninfected controls (p > 0.95). The r...
Keratin and associated proteins of the equine hoof wall.
American journal of veterinary research    October 1, 1992   Volume 53, Issue 10 1859-1863
Grosenbaugh DA, Hood DM.In this study, we described water-insoluble proteins extracted from the germinative regions (stratum internum and coronary band epithelium) and the cornified outer surface (stratum medium) of the equine hoof wall. Two major types of polypeptides were identified: the intermediate filaments (IF) and the IF-associated proteins. The IF, including keratins, composed a major portion of this fraction, had electrophoretic mobilities on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the range of 40 to 80 kDa, and reacted with acidic or basic keratin-specific monoclonal antibodies. Differe...
Effect of hypertonic and isotonic saline solutions on plasma constituents of conscious horses.
American journal of veterinary research    October 1, 1992   Volume 53, Issue 10 1844-1849
Bertone JJ, Shoemaker KE.Blood constituents and vascular volume indices were determined in 5 standing horses by use of 2-period crossover experimental design. Horses were either administered hypertonic (2,400 mosm/kg of body weight, i.v.) or isotonic (300 mosm/kg, i.v.) saline solution. Each solution was administered at a dosage of 5 ml/kg (infusion rate, 80 ml/min). Samples for determination of PCV, plasma volume, blood volume, plasma osmolality, total amount of plasma protein and plasma concentrations of protein, Na, K, and Cl were collected at 0 hour (baseline, before fluid infusion) and 0.5 hour (at the end of flu...

Comparative biochemistry and physiology. B, Comparative biochemistry    October 1, 1992   Volume 103, Issue 2 385-389 doi: 10.1016/0305-0491(92)90309-f
Aminlari M, Vaseghi T.1. A new colorimetric method was used for determination of arginase in different tissues of some domestic animals. 2. In all species studied liver was the richest source of arginase. 3. Significant differences were observed in the specific activity of arginase in livers from different species. 4. In all species, besides liver, kidney and brain also contained significant levels of arginase. 5. In the dog, in addition to the three organs mentioned above, lung, heart, spleen and skeletal muscle showed some arginase activity. 6. In sheep and cattle significant arginase activity was observed in the...
Furosemide-induced electrolyte depletion associated with echinocytosis in horses.
American journal of veterinary research    October 1, 1992   Volume 53, Issue 10 1769-1772
Weiss DJ, Geor R, Smith CM, McClay CB.Echinocytes have been incriminated in the pathogenesis of exertional diseases in horses. To evaluate the hypothesis that echinocytes are dehydrated erythrocytes, we decreased blood sodium and potassium concentrations in 4 horses by administering furosemide (1.0 mg/kg of body weight, q 12 h) for 2 days and we monitored CBC, serum and erythrocyte sodium and potassium concentrations, and echinocyte numbers. Serum sodium concentration decreased progressively over the 48 hours of furosemide administration, then returned to near baseline concentration at 168 hours. A statistically significant decrea...
Acetylsalicylic acid and blood coagulation in the horse.
DTW. Deutsche tierarztliche Wochenschrift    October 1, 1992   Volume 99, Issue 10 410-412
Hagedorn HW, Böck M, Schulz R.Equine blood may contain salicylic acid (SA) taken up as free acid or represents the metabolite of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA). To obtain information of SA in race horses we screened blood samples of trotting-horses routinely drawn to be analyzed for doping substances. The individual values determined followed a Gaussian distribution displaying a geometric mean of 19 ng SA per ml serum. A probit analysis revealed linear relationship (r = 0.995). Additional studies examined the antithrombotic efficacy of ASA in the horse. An oral dose of 300 mg ASA considerably elevated the bleeding time for mor...
Sex does not influence serum osteocalcin levels in standardbred horses of different ages.
Canadian journal of veterinary research = Revue canadienne de recherche veterinaire    October 1, 1992   Volume 56, Issue 4 379-381
Lepage OM, Marcoux M, Tremblay A, Dumas G.The influence of sex on serum osteocalcin levels was studied in 99 Standardbred horses, 52 males and 47 females. The age varied between the day of birth and five years old. A significant inverse correlation (r = -0.87, p 0.05). When the subjects were divided into five age groups of six months or less, 6 to 18, 18 to 24, 24 to 36 and between 36 and 60 months, no significant influence of sex was noted. A predictive model for serum osteocalcin levels (y = 52.19 - 0.026 age in days, r2 = 0.76) for Standardbred horses aged between the day of birth and five years is described.
[Electrophoretic studies of serum protein fractions in horses with laminitis].

Berliner und Munchener tierarztliche Wochenschrift    October 1, 1992   Volume 105, Issue 10 328-332
Zepperitz H, Gürtler H.Concentrations of ionized calcium (Cai) in blood and of total calcium (Ca(t)) in serum were determined in 99 cattle, 58 sheep, 74 pigs and 59 horses of different age groups and reproductive periods as well as kinds of use of the animals. The values of Cai in blood in the groups taken into account for comparison of species decreased significantly in the order dairy cows < ewes < sows < horses. In cattle and pigs, there were significant differences in the Cai-level, according to age with the youngest animals having the highest values. In cows from the fourth lactation onward, one day po...
Arteriovenous differences for glutamine in the equine gastrointestinal tract.
American journal of veterinary research    October 1, 1992   Volume 53, Issue 10 1864-1867
Duckworth DH, Madison JB, Calderwood-Mays M, Souba WW.Glutamine has been shown to be an important metabolic substrate of enterocytes in many animals, including cats, dogs, hamsters, human beings, monkeys, rabbits, rats, and sheep. To determine whether glutamine is important in the metabolism of cells of the equine gastrointestinal tract, we examined transintestinal differences in glutamine concentrations in the arterial and venous circulation, and measured activity of the major glutamine catabolizing enzyme, glutaminase. Arteriovenous differences provide an index of the amount of a given substrate removed by the tissue across which the measuremen...
Potential use of simple manganese salts as antioxidant drugs in horses.
American journal of veterinary research    October 1, 1992   Volume 53, Issue 10 1822-1829
Singh RK, Kooreman KM, Babbs CF, Fessler JF, Salaris SC, Pham J.The scavenging of superoxide radicals by endogenous and therapeutically administered superoxide dismutases may prevent superoxide-mediated oxidative stress leading to lipid peroxidation, membrane lysis, and cell death in a wide variety of normal and pathologic states. Simple inorganic manganous salts such as MnCl2 also have superoxide dismutase-like activity and are extremely inexpensive, compared with enzymatic superoxide dismutase preparations. In this study, we explored the use of Mn salts as antioxidant drugs. We used the percentage of inhibition of nitroblue tetrazolium reduction by super...
Acholeplasma multilocale sp. nov., isolated from a horse and a rabbit.
International journal of systematic bacteriology    October 1, 1992   Volume 42, Issue 4 513-517 doi: 10.1099/00207713-42-4-513
Hill AC, Polak-Vogelzang AA, Angulo AF.Acholeplasma strains were isolated from the nasopharynx of a horse (strain PN525T [T = type strain]) and the feces of a rabbit (strain B1). One clone of strain PN525T and one clone of strain B1 were examined in detail. These clones were indistinguishable from each other and were serologically distinct from the previously described Acholeplasma and Mycoplasma spp. The strains had the following properties: guanine-plus-cytosine content of 31 mol%; sterol was not required for growth, which occurred under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions; glucose was metabolized; and arginine was hydrolyzed. ...
Immunochemical study of equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG/PMSG): antigenic determinants on alpha- and beta-subunits.
Biochimica et biophysica acta    September 4, 1992   Volume 1159, Issue 1 74-80 doi: 10.1016/0167-4838(92)90077-q
Maurel MC, Ban E, Bidart JM, Combarnous Y.In the present study we have established an immunochemical mapping of equine Chorionic Gonadotropin (eCG/PMSG) using three monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), namely the antibodies ECG01, E10 and D7, raised against the native hormone. These antibodies do not bind to reduced, alkylated hormone, suggesting that they recognize discontinuous rather than continuous epitopes. We have also assessed the reactivity of mAbs towards human CG, and ovine, porcine, equine and bovine LH and FSH. The antigenic determinant recognized by ECG01 is localized on the alpha-subunit of equine gonadotropins and of human CG ...
[A lectin histochemical study of the epidermis off the skin and the hoof of horses].
Anatomia, histologia, embryologia    September 1, 1992   Volume 21, Issue 3 238-245 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0264.1992.tb00456.x
Hashimoto Y, Reese S, Bragulla H, Budras KD.Carbohydrate moieties of cell membranes in the epidermis of equine skin and hoof were investigated using lectin-histochemistry. The loss of desmosomes during keratinization leads to a reduced lectin affinity. Lectin binding capacity of the intercellular matrix in the stratum corneum of the epidermis is weak compared to that of the intercellular kitt of the hoof. Qualitative differences in lectin binding of the intercellular kitt of different hoof segments correlate with the quality of the horn in the respective areas.

Changes in the hypothalamic-hypophyseal axis of mares in relation to the winter solstice.
Journal of reproduction and fertility    September 1, 1992   Volume 96, Issue 1 195-202 doi: 10.1530/jrf.0.0960195
Silvia PJ, Johnson L, Fitzgerald BP.In mares, the amount of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) is low in the hypothalamus during seasonal anoestrus, but by early spring, concentrations of GnRH are high. The timing of this response was characterized more precisely by determining concentrations of GnRH in hypothalamic tissue collected immediately before and at various times after the winter solstice (22 December 1986). Ovaries, pituitary gland, hypothalamus and a blood sample were collected from six groups of mares (6-12 mares per group) at death, 1 week before day of the winter solstice and 1, 2, 3 and 12 weeks afterwards. No...
Comparison of standard and radionuclide methods for measurement of glomerular filtration rate and effective renal blood flow in female horses.
American journal of veterinary research    September 1, 1992   Volume 53, Issue 9 1612-1616
Matthews HK, Andrews FM, Daniel GB, Jacobs WR, Held JP.Comparison of standard and radionuclide methods for measuring glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and effective renal blood flow (ERBF) was performed in 8 healthy female horses. Inulin and p-aminohippurate solutions were administered IV as a bolus, followed by sustained administration. Urine and plasma inulin and p-aminohippurate concentrations and urine volume were measured. Glomerular filtration rate and ERBF were calculated on the basis of these measurements. Glomerular filtration rate and ERBF were measured on the basis of plasma clearance of the radiopharmaceuticals, 99mTc-labeled diethylene...

Biulleten' eksperimental'noi biologii i meditsiny    September 1, 1992   Volume 114, Issue 9 274-276
Gulevskiĭ AK, Grishchenko VI, Tereshchenko OS, Zagnoĭko VI, Akhremenko AK, Kucherenko SN.The effect of the fraction (1-10 kDa) obtained from the brain of cold-adapted animal (Yakut horse) on Ca2+ transport in sarcolemma vesicles of cardiomyocytes was investigated. It was shown that during insertion of Yakut horse brain fraction into incubation medium at the concentration from 10(-9) M to 3.10(-5) M at Ca2+ transport substrate concentration from 0.1 mM to 1.0 mM, the rate of Ca2+ passive penetration into vesicles slightly increased and at Ca2+ transport substrate concentration 3 mM, which is physiologic, a decrease of rate values was established for all concentrations of the fracti...
Histochemical study on the gland of pelvis renalis in the horse.
The Kitasato archives of experimental medicine    September 1, 1992   Volume 65, Issue 2-3 117-122
Mutoh K, Watanabe S, Wakuri H.The glands of pelvis renalis in adult and fetal horses were examined by histochemically. The glandular terminal was divided into two types, intraepithelial gland (IE) and extraepithelial gland (EE) by their locations and histochemical characters. Both glands were composed of mucous cells. The former lay in the transitional epithelium and were stained reddish with galactose oxidase-Schiff (GOS) and mild oxidation-Schiff (MOS), bluish purple with periodic acid-cold thionine Schiff-NaOH-PAS (PCP). The latter distributed in the lamina propria, but was not discovered in the fetus. They were stained...

American journal of veterinary research    September 1, 1992   Volume 53, Issue 9 1641-1644
Troedsson MH, Liu IK.Undiluted uterine secretion was used to determine the concentration of total protein and the accumulated volume of uterine secretion after a bacterial inoculation in mares susceptible and resistant to chronic uterine infection (CUI). The uterus of 6 susceptible and 5 resistant mares was inoculated with 5 x 10(6) Streptococcus zooepidemicus on the third day of estrus. Using a tampon inserted in the uterus, secretions were sampled at 5, 12, 24, and 36 hours after inoculation, followed by intrauterine lavage with phosphate buffered saline solution. The concentration of protein was determined in t...
The development of gluconeogenic enzymes in the liver and kidney of fetal and newborn foals.
Journal of developmental physiology    September 1, 1992   Volume 18, Issue 3 137-142
Fowden AL, Mijovic J, Ousey JC, McGladdery A, Silver M.The activities of glucose-6-phosphatase (G6P), fructose diphosphatase, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK), aspartate and alanine transferases were measured in liver and kidney of fetal foals between 100-318 days of gestation (term approximately 335 days) and during the immediate postnatal period (0-48 h after birth). All 5 enzymes could be detected in the fetal liver and kidney at the youngest gestational age studied. Mean fetal activities were lower than those observed in their mothers and showed no change with gestational age for the majority of enzymes studied. However, renal PEPCK a...
1H-NMR comparative study of the active site in shark (Galeorhinus japonicus), horse, and sperm whale deoxy myoglobins.
Journal of biochemistry    September 1, 1992   Volume 112, Issue 3 414-420 doi: 10.1093/oxfordjournals.jbchem.a123914
Yamamoto Y, Iwafune K, Chûjô R, Inoue Y, Imai K, Suzuki T.1H-NMR spectra of deoxy myoglobins (Mbs) from shark (Galeorhinus japonicus), horse, and sperm whale have been studied to gain insights into their active site structure. It has been demonstrated for the first time that nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) can be observed between heme peripheral side-chain proton resonances of these paramagnetic complexes. Val-E11 methyl and His-F8 C delta H proton resonances of these Mbs were also assigned from the characteristic shift and line width. The hyperfine shift of the former resonance was used to calculate the magnetic anisotropy of the protein. The shift ...
Interaction of plasma gelsolin with tropomyosin.
FEBS letters    August 31, 1992   Volume 309, Issue 1 56-58 doi: 10.1016/0014-5793(92)80738-3
Koepf EK, Burtnick LD.Horse plasma gelsolin labelled with benzophenone-4-isothiocyanate can be photochemically cross-linked to rabbit cardiac tropomyosin. The cross-linking proceeds with greater efficiency in calcium-containing buffers. Further evidence for interaction between these proteins is provided by retention of fluorescently labelled gelsolin on tropomyosin-agarose affinity columns and by the ability of tropomyosin to cause an increase in the fluorescence intensity of gelsolin labelled with fluorescein-5-isothiocyanate. Both of these effects require the presence of calcium ions.
Hydrophobic interaction of lysozyme and alpha-lactalbumin from equine milk whey.
Biochimica et biophysica acta    August 21, 1992   Volume 1122, Issue 3 305-310 doi: 10.1016/0167-4838(92)90409-7
Haezebrouck P, Noppe W, Van Dael H, Hanssens I.From fluorescence measurements on mixtures of bis-ANS and equine lysozyme and from Ca(2+)-dependent hydrophobic interaction chromatography of equine lysozyme, it is demonstrated that Ca2+ binding induces a conformational change upon which hydrophobic regions in the protein become less accessible. Bis-ANS fluorescence titrations in the absence of Ca2+ and in 2 mM Ca2+ are also performed with equine alpha-lactalbumin variants B and C. These variants differ by an amino-acid exchange Asp----Ile at residue 95. The fluorescence titration curves indicate that the accessibility of the probe to the Ca2...
Crystal structure of cleaved equine leucocyte elastase inhibitor determined at 1.95 A resolution.
Journal of molecular biology    August 20, 1992   Volume 226, Issue 4 1207-1218 doi: 10.1016/0022-2836(92)91062-t
Baumann U, Bode W, Huber R, Travis J, Potempa J.The crystal structure of active-site cleaved equine leucocyte elastase inhibitor, a member of the serpin superfamily, has been solved and refined to a crystallographic R-factor of 17.6% at 1.95 A resolution. Despite being an intracellular inhibitor with rather low sequence homology of 30% to human alpha 1-antichymotrypsin and alpha 1-proteinase inhibitor, the three-dimensional structures are very similar, with deviations only at the sites of insertions and few mobile secondary structure elements. The better resolution in comparison with the structures of other cleaved serpins allows a more pre...
Increases in serum sphingosine and sphinganine and decreases in complex sphingolipids in ponies given feed containing fumonisins, mycotoxins produced by Fusarium moniliforme.
The Journal of nutrition    August 11, 1992   Volume 122, Issue 8 1706-1716 doi: 10.1093/jn/122.8.1706
Wang E, Ross PF, Wilson TM, Riley RT, Merrill AH.Consumption of food contaminated with Fusarium moniliforme causes leucoencephalomalacia and hepatotoxicity in horses, pulmonary edema in pigs and liver cancer in rats, and has been correlated with esophageal cancer in humans. The causative agents are thought to be a family of compounds called fumonisins, which have recently been shown to be potent inhibitors of sphingosine (sphinganine) N-acyltransferase. Because inhibition at this step blocks the formation of complex sphingolipids while leading to accumulation of sphinganine, we hypothesized that exposure of animals to fumonisin-contaminated ...
[Plasma gastrin levels in horses with colic].
Tierarztliche Praxis    August 1, 1992   Volume 20, Issue 4 395-398
Schusser GF, Obermayer-Pietsch B.The plasma gastrin levels in fasted horses (21.1 +/- 15.6 pg/ml), in horses with spasmodic colic (7.3 +/- 5.4 pg/ml) and in horses with impaction of the left ventral large colon and/or pelvic flexure (11.4 +/- 3.1 pg/ml) were not significantly different. The plasma gastrin concentrations of horses with strangulation obstruction of the small intestine, large colon displacement or adynamic ileus, and which had no gastric reflux, were 12.9 +/- 8.7 pg/ml and did not differ from fasted gastrin levels. Horses which had 5-10 litres of stomach content reflux had a higher mean gastrin level (32.2 +/- 2...
Variability of muscle fibre composition and fibre size in the horse gluteus medius: an enzyme-histochemical and morphometric study.
Journal of anatomy    August 1, 1992   Volume 181 ( Pt 1), Issue Pt 1 1-10
López-Rivero JL, Serrano AL, Diz AM, Galisteo AM.To determine the variability in fibre types and fibre sizes in the equine gluteus medius muscle, biopsy specimens were removed from 5 sites, at 4 different depths, within the right and left muscles of 3 Andalusian stallions. The percentage, lesser fibre diameter and cross-sectional area of the various fibre types were measured systematically in myosin ATPase and NADH-tetrazolium reductase-stained, serial cryostat sections of these multiple samples. Significant differences in muscle fibre type composition were recorded, with a lower percentage of type I fibres (high myosin ATPase activity at pH...
