Stimulation by phytohaemagglutinin of peripheral blood lymphocytes from horse, pig, sheep and man. Optimal conditions for stimulation by phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) were established for equine, porcine, ovine and human lymphocytes in MEMS medium. Optimal thymidine concentration was determined for assay of cell transformation. With all species tested horse serum gave highest thymidine incorporation. Homologous serum was not more appropriate for lymphocytes of man, pig and sheep. Optimal stimulation was achieved at 20, 0.5-5, 5, and 10-40 micrograms PHA per 10(6) cells for human, equine, porcine and ovine lymphocytes, respectively.
Epidemiological significance of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus in vitro markers. One hundred and fifty-eight strains of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus were typed antigenically and classified epidemiologically as either epizootic or enzootic. Plaque sizes for 148 of these strains were determined, and the pH requirements for hemagglutination (HA) of goose erythrocytes of 131 were studied. Energy metabolism of the contagious equine metritis bacterium. The energy metabolism of the English E-CMO strain of contagious equine metritis bacterium was studied in whole cells and cell extracts. This bacterium appears to have an active Krebs cycle and probably obtains energy by oxidative phosphorylation since glycolysis and the hexose monophosphate pathways appear to be absent. Chemotaxis of horse polymorphonuclear leukocytes to N-formyl-L-methionyl-L-leucyl-L-phenylalanine. Mesothelial cells of peritoneal fluid. Cells in the peritoneal fluid from 159 horses were examined in Giemsa stained preparations using light microscopy. Normal mesothelial cells showed an oval nucleus with finely reticular chromatin and pale blue cytoplasm. Activated mesothelial cells occurred in fluids derived from mesothelium under acute or subacute, non-septic stimulus and were remarkable for their pleomorphism and intense basophilia which may mimic neoplasia. Transformed mesothelial cells seen in chronic inflammatory fluids were sometimes phagocytic and showed conspicuous cytoplasmic vacuolation.
Isolation and some properties of equine alpha 1-antitrypsin. 1. Equine alpha 1-antitrypsin was isolated from horse plasma by a combination of ammonium sulfate and acidification precipitation followed by ion-exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose, molecular sieve chromatography on Sephadex G-200 and affinity chromatography on Cibacron Blue-agarose. 2. The purified protein showed a single precipitin arc on immunoelectrophoresis in agarose but gave two bands on discontinuous polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). 3. Transmission electron microscopy of horse embryos 3-16 days after ovulation. The 23 embryos were obtained by flushing the reproductive tract. Though the general cytology was observed, most attention was given to the formation of the embryonic capsule. It first appeared as a thin uniform layer on the inner surface of the zona pellucida of embryos recovered from the uterus on Day 6. By Day 8 the capsule was about 1 micron thick and the zona pellucida had been shed. In fixed embryos of 11 days and over the capsule was 3 microns thick and had a finely stippled but otherwise homogeneous appearance.

Subtype-1 isolates of Equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) from a quadriplegic horse and from an aborted foetus were compared with each other and with a subtype-2 respiratory isolate. Comparison of the interaction of equine LH and human chorionic gonadotrophin to equine testicular receptors. Human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) can be used to study horse luteinizing hormone (LH) receptors in stallion testicular tissue. hCG was more stable than horse LH during radioiodination when compared by their abilities to bind to testicular receptor sites. Lymphocyte stimulation was observed in whole equine blood in the presence of phytohaemagglutinin and M protein extracted from a typical strain of Streptococcus equi.
