Surgical treatment of osteomyelitis in the metacarpal and metatarsal bones of the horse. The case histories of four horses with osteomyelitis involving the metacarpal and metatarsal bones are reviewed and the surgical treatments discussed. The horses recovered after curettage of all infected tissue and post operative drainage. The role of antibiotics in treatment is considered and reference is made to the acute treatment of deep wounds to avoid osteomyelitis.
Maintenance of foals with combined immunodeficiency: causes and control of secondary infections. Sixty-six cases of combined immunodeficiency (CID) in foals were studied to determine the most prevalent causes of infection and death. Pregnant mare’s serum gonadotropin: V. Indomethacin or cortisone and the reversal of antifertility efficacy of pregnant mare’s serum gonadotropin. Pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin (PMSG) of 10 IU on day 5 of pregnancy induced luteal demise and consequently an absolute resorption of fetuses and placentae resulted on day 16 of pregnancy. Simultaneous regimen of PMSG and indomethacin or cortisone was found to be consistently effective in preventing the luteolytic effect of PMSG. Monitoring of plasma and milk progesterone for evaluation of postpartum estrous cycles and early pregnancy in mares. Plasma and milk progesterone concentrations in 13 mares were determined 3 times a week for 5 months, beginning at parturition. The estrous cycle was divided into 2 phases. Estrus was considered to occur when the plasma progesterone concentration was less than 1 ng/ml, with diestrus occurring when plasma progesterone content was greater than or equal to 1 ng/ml. Cardiovascular, acid-base, electrolyte, and plasma volume changes in ponies developing alimentary laminitis. Twelve Shetland ponies were fed a high-starch ration. Seven ponies which had a transitory metabolic acidosis developed laminitis 56 hours (+/- 3.5, SEM) after overfeeding. These ponies also developed persistent hypokalemia, hyperthermia, and increased heart rate 24 hours before the onset of lameness. Equine rhinopneumonitis vaccine: immunogenicity and safety in foals. Immunogenicity and safety of an equine herpesvirus 1 (ehv-1) vaccine were studied in 111 foals varying in age from 1 to 122 days. Each of 88 principals was given 1 im injection of vaccine. Five of the 88 foals were revaccinated; 69 of the vaccinated principals and 23 nonvaccinated foals (serving as controls) were challenge exposed intranasally with virulent ehv-1.

A case of spermatic arteriovenous anastomosis in the horse. A large anastomosis of the spermatic artery and vein is described. This was found while surgically removing an abdominal testis. Before surgery the animal wanted to rear after exercise and could not stand on 3 legs for any length of time while being shod. This unusual behaviour disappeared after removal of the mass. The performance and conformation of the horse has also greatly improved.
Cardiopathological observations on histopathogenesis of wandering pacemaker in horses.
