Topic:Diagnostic Technique

Diagnostic techniques in equine medicine encompass a range of procedures and tools used to identify diseases, injuries, or other health conditions in horses. These techniques include imaging methods such as radiography, ultrasonography, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), as well as laboratory tests like blood work and tissue biopsies. Each diagnostic method provides specific information that can aid in the assessment and management of equine health issues. Radiography is commonly used for evaluating bone structures, while ultrasonography is useful for soft tissue examination. MRI offers detailed images of both soft and hard tissues, though its use is limited by cost and availability. Laboratory tests can detect biochemical and hematological changes indicative of disease. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the development, application, and efficacy of various diagnostic techniques in equine veterinary practice.
[The spontaneous reduction of a twin pregnancy in two mares].
Schweizer Archiv fur Tierheilkunde    January 1, 1997   Volume 139, Issue 2 71-77
Meier HP, Gertsch U, Kohler S.Twin pregnancies are a serious problem in stud medicine as they terminate in most cases in abortion, stillbirth or the delivery of dead or weak and deformed foals. In recent years, the introduction of sonography has greatly improved the management of mares with twin conceptuses, in particular monitoring the phenomenon of spontaneous embryo reduction to a single vesicle. This allows supervision of pregnancy with relatively little expenditure and loss of time. We document the spontaneous reduction to single vesicles of unilateral twin pregnancies in a draught- and a warmblood-mare. In both mares...
A survey for antibodies to equine arteritis virus in donkeys, mules and zebra using virus neutralisation (VN) and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1997   Volume 29, Issue 1 40-43 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1997.tb01634.x
Paweska JT, Binns MM, Woods PS, Chirnside ED.A seroepidemiological survey of donkeys in South Africa (n = 4300) indicated a wide distribution and increasing prevalence of antibodies to equine arteritis virus (EAV). Donkey sera inhibited equine arteritis virus infection in virus neutralisation (VN) tests and in ELISA specifically bound to a recombinant antigen derived from the Bucyrus isolate of EAV. These results suggest that donkeys have been exposed to the same serotype of this virus as circulates among horses. A good correlation existed between EAV neutralising antibody titres and ELISA absorbance values (0.8631); the ELISA was sensit...
Immunoepidemiology of the equine tapeworm Anoplocephala perfoliata: age-intensity profile and age-dependency of antibody subtype responses.
Parasitology    January 1, 1997   Volume 114 ( Pt 1) 89-94 doi: 10.1017/s0031182096008086
Proudman CJ, Holmes MA, Sheoran AS, Edwards SE, Trees AJ.The equine intestinal cestode Anoplocephala perfoliata has been the subject of recent epidemiological and immunological studies because of its suspected association with intestinal disease in the horse. We have previously shown that the IgG(T) subtype antibody response to the 12/13 kDa component of the parasite excretory/secretory (E/S) antigen is positively correlated with parasite intensity. In this study, we utilize that correlation to examine the changes in natural infection intensity with age. Infection intensity based on IgG(T) responses showed a triphasic age-dependency pattern with pea...
The prevalence of shedding of Cryptosporidium and Giardia spp. based on a single fecal sample collection from each of 91 horses used for backcountry recreation. Johnson E, Atwill ER, Filkins ME, Kalush J.Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia duodenalis are now recognized as primary enteric pathogens in animals and humans. Regulatory agencies, such as the Environmental Protection Agency are under increasing pressure to reduce the concentration of these protozoa in surface waters. Given the popularity of recreational riding of horses on public land in California backcountry, concerns have been raised by various regulatory agencies as to whether horses used for backcountry recreation are a significant source of C. parvum and G. duodenalis for the environment. The prevalence of fecal shedding of Cryp...
Local electrostatic potentials in pyridoxal phosphate labelled horse heart cytochrome c.
Journal of photochemistry and photobiology. B, Biology    January 1, 1997   Volume 37, Issue 1-2 74-83 doi: 10.1016/s1011-1344(96)07345-9
Miteva MA, Kossekova GP, Villoutreix BO, Atanasov BP.The present work shows the application of an optical label pyridoxal phosphate (PLP) for the experimental determination of local electrostatic potentials in singly substituted cytochromes c modified by pyridoxal phosphate at Lys 79 (PLP-Lys-79-cyt.c) or at Lys 86 (PLP-Lys-86-cyt.c). PLP has also been used to calculate the pKa values of all ionizable groups and the electrostatic potentials in the modified proteins and to analyse their properties. The experimental pKa values for the pyridine nitrogen and phenolic hydroxyl of the bound label were obtained from pH-dependent absorbance and fluoresc...

Quantitative two-dimensional echocardiography in the horse: a review.
Acta veterinaria Hungarica    January 1, 1997   Volume 45, Issue 2 127-136
Vörös K.Quantitative two-dimensional echocardiography (2DE) was introduced into equine cardiology in the early 1990s. At first, linear and area dimensions and left ventricular volume were validated by the comparison of parameters determined during in vitro 2DE and autopsy measurements. Based on these studies, tomographic planes and intracardiac reference points for in vivo measurements were established and 2DE values have been determined for healthy adult horses by various authors. These data were similar to each other and proved to be comparable with M-mode echocardiography measurements. However, dif...
Expression of equine morbillivirus (EMV) matrix and fusion proteins and their evaluation as diagnostic reagents.
Archives of virology    January 1, 1997   Volume 142, Issue 11 2269-2279 doi: 10.1007/s007050050241
Wang LF, Gould AR, Selleck PW.Full-length cDNA clones coding for the matrix (M) and fusion (F) proteins of equine morbillivirus (EMV) were isolated by RT-PCR, and expressed in Escherichia coli using two different expression systems. Western blot analysis indicated that the M and F proteins, expressed either by itself or as fusion proteins with glutathione S-transferase (GST), were insoluble and degraded after expression. Analysis of the degradation pattern of recombinant M protein suggested that the N-terminus of the matrix protein might be more stable and antigenic than the C-terminal region. Therefore a third system was ...
Electrically induced blink reflex in horses.
The Veterinary record    December 21, 1996   Volume 139, Issue 25 621-624
Añor S, Espadaler JM, Monreal L, Mayhew IG.The electrically induced blink reflex was studied electromyographically in 21 healthy adult, detomidine-sedated horses. Using surface electrodes, the supraorbital nerve was electrically stimulated at the supraorbital foramen. The responses were recorded from the ipsilateral and contralateral orbicularis oculi muscles with concentric needle electrodes inserted in the lateral aspect of the ventral eyelids. Ipsilateral and contralateral recordings were made on successive stimulations of the same side of the face, maintaining a constant stimulus intensity. The electromyographically recorded respon...

Animal reproduction science    December 2, 1996   Volume 45, Issue 1-2 91-102 doi: 10.1016/s0378-4320(96)01554-0
Gentry PA, Zareie M, Liptrap RM.The amounts of total protein, albumin, fibronectin, alpha 2-macroglobulin (alpha 2-M), immunoglobulin G, ceruloplasmin and antithrombin were determined in fluids collected from 53 preovulatory equine follicles and compared with the contents of estradiol-17 beta, progesterone and androstenedione, with follicle size and the amounts of the equivalent proteins in normal equine plasma. The concentration of fibronectin and the fibronectin/albumin ratios increased significantly with follicle size and with follicular estradiol levels. The alpha 2-M levels and alpha 2-M/albumin ratios correlated with f...
Testing methods for exercise intolerance in horses.
The Veterinary clinics of North America. Equine practice    December 1, 1996   Volume 12, Issue 3 421-433 doi: 10.1016/s0749-0739(17)30265-1
Parente EJ.The many testing methods available and the increasing sophistication of diagnostic equipment have enhanced greatly our capabilities to diagnose causes of exercise intolerance in the equine athlete during the last several years. High-speed treadmill examination has become the focus of this form of evaluation. Not all clinicians perform or have access to high-speed treadmill examinations. Testing methods that require the use of the high-speed treadmill, as well as methods that do not, are discussed.
Modified apparatus for collection of free-flow urine from mares.
Journal of the South African Veterinary Association    December 1, 1996   Volume 67, Issue 4 214-216
van den Berg IS.An apparatus for collection of free-flow urine from female horses is described. This apparatus is a modification of a similar device described previously. It allows the collection of voided urine from adult female horses without confining them to metabolic stables or resorting to invasive procedures like bladder catheterisation. It is relatively easy to use after a short adaptation period.
Measurement of cardiac output by transoesophageal Doppler echocardiography in anaesthetized horses: comparison with thermodilution.
British journal of anaesthesia    December 1, 1996   Volume 77, Issue 6 773-780 doi: 10.1093/bja/77.6.773
Young LE, Blissitt KJ, Bartram DH, Clutton RE, Molony V, Jones RS.In order to determine if transoesophageal Doppler echocardiography could be used to estimate cardiac output in anaesthetized horses, we have compared the technique with estimations of cardiac output by thermodilution in eight healthy adult thoroughbreds. Measurements of aortic blood flow velocity were made by high pulse repetition frequency (HPRF) and continuous wave (CW) Doppler echocardiography from a 3.5-MHz transoesophageal probe. Cardiac output was increased during the study by administration of dobutamine, providing a range of cardiac output measurements by thermodilution from 15.0 to 64...
Neosporosis as a cause of equine protozoal myeloencephalitis.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    December 1, 1996   Volume 209, Issue 11 1907-1913
Marsh AE, Barr BC, Madigan J, Lakritz J, Nordhausen R, Conrad PA.Neosporosis was diagnosed in an 11-year-old Quarter Horse gelding with clinical signs and diagnostic test results compatible with equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM). Presumptive postmortem diagnosis of EPM attributable to Sarcocystis neurona infection is generally made on the basis of detecting an antibody titer to S neurona in the CSF or characteristic histologic lesions, even when parasites have not been specifically identified. Neosporosis was confirmed in the horse described here by use of immunohistochemical examination, in vitro culturing, and ultrastructural and molecular characte...
[Observations of Setaria equina (Nematoda: Setariidae) with the optical microscope and scanning electron microscope].
Parassitologia    December 1, 1996   Volume 38, Issue 3 525-529
Giannetto S, Zanghì A, Cristarella S.Adults of S. equina (Spirurida, Setariidae), 1 male and 2 females, collected from vaginal sac of stallion, were studied by soanning electron microscopy (SEM). The amphids, cephalic and cervical papillae, peribuccal ring, fine transverse bands and bosses of the cuticle, as well as caudal papillae were visualized clearly at this examination. The results of the present survey contribute towards the identification of S. equina, improve the definition of the characters which are demonstrated by common light microscopy and give the exact number of male caudal papillae including the lateral cloacal r...
Lower respiratory tract disease.
The Veterinary clinics of North America. Equine practice    December 1, 1996   Volume 12, Issue 3 457-472 doi: 10.1016/s0749-0739(17)30267-5
Moore BR.Lower respiratory tract disease is an important source of poor performance and exercise intolerance in racehorses and middle-aged sport horses. Horses that perform high-intensity exercise are predisposed to development of infectious and noninfectious respiratory disease. Diagnostic aids for investigation of lower respiratory tract disease include thorough thoracic auscultation with rebreathing, endoscopic examination, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), and thoracic radiographic examination. The therapeutic approach for horses with lower respiratory tract diseases often can be directed by cytologic ...
Direct detection of equine herpesvirus DNA in tissues of aborted equine fetuses.
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe B. Journal of veterinary medicine. Series B    December 1, 1996   Volume 43, Issue 10 639-642 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0450.1996.tb00363.x
Ishiyama T, Nishimori T, Kato M, Yamada H, Sato K, Sentsui H.Restriction endonuclease analysis of equine herpesviruses 1 (EHV-1) and 4 has been investigated using cultured cells infected with these viruses. The DNA cleavage patterns of these viruses were observed in the intracellular DNA after digestion with Eco RI and electrophoresis. This procedure was applied to the diagnosis of equine herpesvirus infection in aborted equine fetuses. The characteristic Eco RI restriction pattern of EHV-1 DNA was directly detectable in the emulsion of lungs collected from aborted equine fetuses.
Alterations in equine guttural pouch morphology with head position: observations using a new technique for producing accurate casts.
The Anatomical record    December 1, 1996   Volume 246, Issue 4 579-584 doi: 10.1002/(SICI)1097-0185(199612)246:43.0.CO;2-L
Babptiste KE, Holladay SD, Freeman LE.An improved technique for preparing casts of the equine guttural pouch is described. The new technique is simplified and inexpensive in comparison to previous techniques and produces highly accurate anatomic models which are both durable and flexible. Methods: Silicone rubber bathtub caulk was injected into the guttural pouches of horse cadavers. The silicone was allowed to cure overnight, and casts were removed by dissection. The new technique was then used to evaluate changes in the shape of the guttural pouch with changes in head position. Results: With flexion of the atlanto-occipital join...
Measurement of extravascular lung water by the double indicator dilution method using heat and sodium in horses under general anesthesia.
The Journal of veterinary medical science    December 1, 1996   Volume 58, Issue 12 1205-1209 doi: 10.1292/jvms.58.12_1205
Ito S, Ishimaru M, Hobo S, Fujinaga T.Rapid infusion is believed to be harmful to the lung, however, the pathological status of pulmonary edema resulting from excessive fluid therapy in horses has not been clarified because the quantitative diagnosis of pulmonary edema is impossible. To evaluate the precision of the double indicator dilution method using heat and sodium in horses, which allows the quantitative diagnosis of pulmonary edema, we compared extravascular lung water volume measured using a lung water computer based on the theory of the double indicator dilution method with that determined by the direct method. The value ...
Diagnostic approach to exercise intolerance in racehorses.
The Veterinary clinics of North America. Equine practice    December 1, 1996   Volume 12, Issue 3 555-564 doi: 10.1016/s0749-0739(17)30272-9
Lilich JD, Gaughan EM.The diagnostic approach to the exercise intolerant racehorse depends on sound, fundamental steps to allow complete examination of the entire horse in a logical, time-efficient fashion. Availability of referral diagnostic modalities should not overshadow the need for collecting a clinical history or performing a complete physical examination. The diagnostic approach to exercise intolerance can be divided into a few basic steps. The first step, conducted without the horse, is a thorough discussion about the horse with the trainer and/or owner. Many clinical histories are complex and therefore fo...

Intravenously administered treatments were 0.9% NaCl solution, erythromycin (0.1 or 1.0 mg/kg of body weight), or bethanechol (0.25 mg/...
Treatment of a comminuted frontal-plane fracture of the distal phalanx in a horse.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    November 15, 1996   Volume 209, Issue 10 1750-1752
Anderson BH, Turner TA, Kobluk CN.Successful treatment of a comminuted frontal plane fracture of the distal phalanx in a horse is described. The bone fractured through the solar canal, close to the insertion of the deep digital flexor tendon. A hoof case was used to reduce bending and tensile stresses on the solar surface by limiting expansion of the hoof wall during weightbearing. In addition, the heel was elevated, using 3 degrees wedge pads incorporated within the hoof cast, to reduce distraction at the fracture site caused by the pull of the deep digital flexor tendon. Two casts were used over a 4-month period. Complete ra...
Analysis of the long terminal repeat from a cytopathic strain of equine infectious anemia virus.
Virology    November 15, 1996   Volume 225, Issue 2 395-399 doi: 10.1006/viro.1996.0614
Madden CR, Shih DS.Sequential passage of the tissue culture-adapted prototype strain of EIAV in fetal donkey dermal (FDD) cell cultures generated a virus stock which exhibits cytopathic effects in FDD cell cultures. In this study, the effects of the long terminal repeat (LTR) region on virus replication and cytopathogenicity were examined. The FDD-adapted virus LTR was found to contain a number of base pair mutations and a large insertion within the U3 region in comparison with the previously characterized LTR, lambda12. Transient gene expression studies showed that basal promoter activity, in FDD cell cultures,...

Equine veterinary journal    November 1, 1996   Volume 28, Issue 6 437-445 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1996.tb01615.x
Chaffin MK, Matthews NS, Cohen ND, Carter GK.A commercially available pulse oximeter was evaluated in anaesthetised foals to determine its accuracy for estimating arterial haemoglobin saturation (SaO2). Five different transducer/transducer attachment site (TTAS) combinations were evaluated; 1-3) a fingertip transmission transducer attached to the foal's ear, lip and tongue, 4) an adhesive transmission transducer positioned on the foal's ear and 5) a forehead reflectance transducer placed on the ventral aspect of the foal's tail-base. Eight normal, Quarter Horse foals (age 5-10 days) were studied while under general anaesthesia. Alteratio...
Immunohistochemical examination of light-chain expression (lambda/kappa ratio) in canine, feline, equine, bovine and porcine plasma cells.
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    November 1, 1996   Volume 43, Issue 9 573-576 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0442.1996.tb00489.x
Arun SS, Breuer W, Hermanns W.Five species of domestic animals were examined immunohistochemically and the light-chain ratios of the immunoglobulins produced by plasma cells analysed. Forty dogs, 11 cats, 10 horses, 11 cattle and 14 pigs were tested using the sequential indirect immunoperoxidase and immunophosphatase methods. Tissues from the tonsils, spleen and cervical lymph nodes were analysed. It could be seen that the lambda/kappa ratio in dogs, cats, horses and cattle is largely dominated by the lambda chains (lambda/kappa ratio in dogs: 91/9%, in cats; 92/8%; in horses: 96/4%; in cattle: 91/9%). A more or less balan...

Veterinary parasitology    November 1, 1996   Volume 66, Issue 1-2 75-86 doi: 10.1016/s0304-4017(96)00998-3
Lyons ET, Tolliver SC, Drudge JH, Stamper S, Swerczek TW, Granstrom DE.Critical tests (91) were done between 1977 and 1992 in Shetland ponies to evaluate drug susceptibility and population dynamics (present paper) of endoparasites. The test ponies, most less than 1 year old, were from a herd where older animals were treated every 8 weeks initially with cambendazole (CBZ) (1974-1978) and then with oxibendazole (OBZ) (1978-1992). Previous field test data (1974-1992) on older ponies in the breeding herd indicated the presence of benzimidazole (BZ) resistant small strongyles. Data on population dynamics from the present critical tests indicated that 28 species of sma...
