Topic:Disease Treatment

Disease treatment in horses encompasses a range of medical interventions and management strategies aimed at addressing various health conditions affecting equine species. These treatments can include pharmacological approaches, such as the administration of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and antiparasitic medications, as well as non-pharmacological methods like physical therapy, dietary adjustments, and surgical procedures. The selection of appropriate treatments depends on the specific disease, its severity, and the individual needs of the horse. This topic brings together peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the efficacy, safety, and advancements in therapeutic options for equine diseases, providing insights into best practices and emerging trends in equine veterinary medicine.

Histopathologic evidence of reperfusion injury in the large colon of horses after low-flow ischemia.
American journal of veterinary research    October 1, 1994   Volume 55, Issue 10 1434-1443
Moore RM, Bertone AL, Muir WW, Stromberg PC, Beard WL.Effects of low-flow ischemia and reperfusion of the large colon on mucosal architecture were determined in horses. Twenty-four adult horses were randomly allocated to 3 groups: sham-operated (n = 6), 6 hours of ischemia (n = 9), and 3 hours of ischemia and 3 hours of reperfusion (n = 9). Low-flow ischemia was induced in horses of groups 2 and 3 by reducing colonic arterial blood flow to 20% of baseline values. Systemic hemodynamic and metabolic variables were maintained constant and in a normal physiologic range. Full-thickness biopsy specimens were obtained from the left ventral colon for his...
Disposition of human drug preparations in the horse. III. Orally administered alclofenac.
Journal of veterinary pharmacology and therapeutics    October 1, 1994   Volume 17, Issue 5 353-358 doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2885.1994.tb00258.x
Delbeke FT, Landuyt J, Debackere M.Concentrations of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) alclofenac were determined by a sensitive high performance liquid chromatographic procedure in plasma and urine of horses following oral administration of a dose of 3 g. In plasma, alclofenac was present in detectable concentrations for 72 h. The plasma disposition in individual horses was best described by a bi-compartmental model with two successive rate constants ka1 = 0.05 +/- 0.06 h-1 and ka2 = 0.06 +/- 0.01 h-1. Alclofenac half-lives t1/2 alpha and t1/2 beta were 1.0 +/- 0.8 h and 6.9 +/- 1.5 h, respectively. Maximal conc...

Reilly L, Habecker P, Beech J, Johnston J, Sweeney C, Hamir A.Abscess of the pituitary gland is a rare condition which has been described in man (Domingue and Wilson 1977; Ahmed et al. 1989), ruminants (Taylor and Meads 1963; Moriwaki er al. 1973; Lomas and Hazell 1983; Perdrizet and Dinsmore 1986) and one horse (Rumbaugh 1977). The some of infection may be either direct extension from an adjacent focus or haematogenous spread from a site elsewhere in the body. In man, pituitary abscess may result from meningitis, sphenoid sinusitis (Selose et al. 1980), and osteomyelitis (Rongetti and Daniels 1950). A review of 20 cases of pituitary abscess in ...
Detection of Ehrlichia risticii from feces of infected horses by immunomagnetic separation and PCR.
Journal of clinical microbiology    September 1, 1994   Volume 32, Issue 9 2147-2151 doi: 10.1128/jcm.32.9.2147-2151.1994
Biswas B, Vemulapalli R, Dutta SK.Potomac horse fever, caused by Ehrlichia risticii, is an important disease of equines. The major features of the disease are fever, leukopenia, and diarrhea. The organism has been detected from the blood mononuclear cells of infected horses, but its presence in the feces has not been known. A method for immunomagnetic separation of E. risticii from the feces of infected horses was developed, and the separated organisms were detected by PCR. Coating immunomagnetic beads (Dynabeads) with a 1:5 dilution of rabbit anti-E. risticii serum and incubating the Dynabeads with fecal samples for 25 min at...

Golenz MR, Wilson WD, Carlson GP, Craychee TJ, Mihalyi JE, Knox L.The suitability of the intraosseous (i.o.) route for drug administration to equine neonates was evaluated in a study comparing the pharmacokinetics of amikacin administered by the i.o. and intravenous (i.v.) routes. Using a cross-over study design amikacin sulphate (7 mg/kg bwt) was administered i.o. or i.v. to 6 healthy foals at 3 and 5 days of age. Amikacin was instantaneously and completely absorbed after i.o. administration, achieving a mean +/- sd peak concentration (34.17 +/- 3.54 micrograms/ml) in the first sample collected 3 min after administration which was not significantly differen...
Quantitation of alpha-1 proteinase inhibitor in the pulmonary epithelial lining fluid of horses with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Research in veterinary science    September 1, 1994   Volume 57, Issue 2 262-264 doi: 10.1016/0034-5288(94)90071-x
Milne EM, Pemberton AD, McGorum BC, Dixon PM, Scudamore CL, Miller HR.The concentration of alpha-1 proteinase inhibitor (API) was measured in the pulmonary epithelial lining fluid (PELF) of horses with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) while they had clinical signs and while they had none. The concentrations of total protein, albumin and API were significantly higher in the PELF of animals with clinical signs of COPD. The correlation between albumin and API in the PELF suggested that most of the API was derived from the serum.

In all cases, hyperlipemia was a secondary complication of a primary systemic disease including septicemia, colitis, parasitism, esophageal obstruction, gastric impaction and rupture, fecalith, and pituitary adenoma. Therapy consisted of specific treatment for the primary disease, supportive care, and nutritional support. The mean time for resolution of hyperlipemia in cases requiring nutritional support (n = 6) was 7 d...
Equine motor neuron disease: findings in 28 horses and proposal of a pathophysiological mechanism for the disease.
Equine veterinary journal    September 1, 1994   Volume 26, Issue 5 409-415 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1994.tb04411.x
Divers TJ, Mohammed HO, Cummings JF, Valentine BA, De Lahunta A, Jackson CA, Summers BA.Over a three and one-half year period, 28 adult horses were diagnosed with equine motor neuron disease (EMND). The most commonly identified environmental risk factors for a horse having EMND were absence of grazing for more than a year and provision of poor quality hay. Quarter Horses were 5.4 times more at risk than other breeds but this was thought to be an epiphenomenon related to the frequency of Quarter Horses at boarding stables. Weight loss, excessive recumbency and/or trembling were the first signs noted. Other clinical diagnostic signs included: constant shifting of the weight in the ...

Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    September 1, 1994   Volume 119, Issue 17 500-502
Greydanus-van der Putten SW, Klein WR, Blankenstein B, de Hoog GS, Koeman J.A 9-year old male Arabian horse was referred to the Department of Large Animal Surgery of the University of Utrecht because of multiple nodules on the inner side of the right hind leg. The nodules seemed to follow a cutaneolymphatic pattern. Histopathology of a nodule showed a granulomatous inflammation with the presence of multinucleated giant cells. In PAS- and Grocott-stained sections, spheroid yeast-like organisms with some budding were found throughout the tissue. A preliminary diagnosis of sporotrichosis was made. A fresh nodule was cultured and the presence of Sporothrix c.f. schenckii ...
Equine demineralized bone matrix: relationship between particle size and osteoinduction.
Veterinary surgery : VS    September 1, 1994   Volume 23, Issue 5 386-395 doi: 10.1111/j.1532-950x.1994.tb00499.x
Vail TB, Trotter GW, Powers BE.The osteoinductive capability of four particle sizes of equine demineralized bone matrix (DBM) was evaluated. Matrix particles were implanted in brachiocephalicus muscle pouches in six horses and were harvested 8 weeks later. Matrix particle sizes of 2.0 mm3 to 4.0 mm3 and 5.0 mm3 to 10.0 mm3 were associated with osteoinductive activity and minimal signs of local inflammation. The two smaller particle sizes (0.425 mm3 to 0.850 mm3 and 0.850 mm3 to 2.0 mm3) were minimally osteoinductive and were associated with a greater local inflammatory response. Microscopic events associated with new bone p...
The anatomic features of the normal tarsus of the live horse as perceived by the sense of sight.
Anatomia, histologia, embryologia    September 1, 1994   Volume 23, Issue 3 239-256 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0264.1994.tb00473.x
McCarthy PH.A description is given of 75 features present in the normal tarsus of the standing horse which are apparent due to visible skin contours overlying them. Depending on whether or not the pelvic limb is supporting full weight or resting, some contours alter their configuration. Therefore the contour of each underlying feature is described separately for each stance of the limb. It is considered that visual inspection and identification of the apparent superficial features of the normal equine tarsus form the basis of orientation and clinical inspection. Furthermore, these features provide referen...
