Metalloproteinase activity has a role in equine chorionic girdle cell invasion. Chorionic girdle cells are a highly invasive subpopulation of trophoblast cells of the equine conceptus. By Day 35 (Day 0 = day of ovulation), cells of the chorionic girdle adhere to the uterine epithelium and begin to invade the endometrial wall. Comparison of the effects of low-molecular-weight and unfractioned heparin in horses. Thirty healthy male horses were allotted to 3 groups and treated blindly during 4 days. Group-1 horses received unfractioned calcium heparin (100 IU/kg of body weight, SC, q 12 h). Group-2 horses received a single dose of a low-molecular-weight heparin (50 anti-Xa IU/kg, SC) every morning, and a similar volume of saline solution every evening. Detection of Trichinella spiralis muscle larvae in naturally infected horses. Human trichinellosis outbreaks related to horsemeat consumption have been reported in France and Italy in recent years. In order to determine if Trichinella is present in horses slaughtered at an abattoir in the State of Mexico, diaphragm muscle tissue samples (22-37 g) from 80 horses were examined by artificial digestion. Four of these samples had larvae that were characterized as Trichinella sp. by morphological criteria and as Trichinella spiralis by the polymerase chain reaction.
Molecular cloning of equine interleukin-1 alpha and -beta cDNAs. Equine interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1 alpha) and IL-1 beta were molecularly cloned to establish a basis for research on inflammatory and immune responses in the horse. Equine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and cDNA clones of equine IL-1 alpha and IL-1 beta covering the whole coding sequences were isolated from them. Evaluation of fetal infection and abortion in pregnant ponies experimentally infected with Ehrlichia risticii. Fetal infectivity of Ehrlichia risticii was investigated in 19 ponies that were E risticii negative on the basis of results of an indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test. Thirteen pregnant ponies were infected by IV administration of E risticii between 90 and 180 days of gestation. Six pregnant ponies served as noninfected controls. Intracranial pressure and cerebral perfusion pressure in clinically normal equine neonates. Intracranial pressure (ICP) and cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) were determined in 8 clinically normal neonatal foals. [Differentiated prognosis in the colicky horse]. In a retrospective study on 271 horses with colic the prediction about the outcome of the disease was made by a discriminating analysis. The best combination of quantitative prognostic parameters was capillary refill time, hematocrit, lactate and anion gap, with 90% correct predictions. In comparison with individually prognostic parameters, the combined prognosis constantly reached a higher percentage of correct predictions, the exact value resulting in 89%. Moreover, survival was better predictable than death.
Sensitivity of antigen ELISA test for detecting Trypanosoma evansi antigen in horses in the subtropical area of Argentina. The sensitivity of an antigen detection enzyme immunoassay (Ag-ELISA) based on a Trypanosoma brucei group-specific monoclonal antibody was evaluated to detect circulating Trypanosoma evansi antigen in horse sera. Molecular cloning of DNA for inhibin alpha-subunit from equine ovary. cDNA encoding equine inhibin alpha-subunit precursor protein was isolated from an equine ovarian cDNA library. Fracture of the distal sesamoid bone in horses: 17 cases (1982-1992). Medical records of 17 horses in which a distal sesamoid bone fracture was diagnosed between 1982 and 1992 were reviewed. An investigation of gram-negative tannin-protein complex degrading bacteria in fecal flora of various mammals. Gram-negative tannin-protein complex degrading bacteria (T-PCDB) were first isolated from animals except for the koala. The occurrence of T-PCDB in feces of 15 species of mammals with different feeding habits was investigated. T-PCDB occurred in 7 of 54 horses but they could not be isolated from other mammals tested. Preweaning diet and stall weaning method influences on stress response in foals. The stress response of foals during weaning was examined in terms of a behavioral protocol and the responses of plasma ascorbate, serum cortisol, and the serum cortisol response to an ACTH challenge. Antibacterial susceptibility patterns for microbial isolates associated with infectious keratitis in horses: 63 cases (1986-1994). Seventy-three aerobic bacterial isolates were cultured from 64 eyes of 63 horses with infectious keratitis. Forty-two (58%) of the organisms isolated initially were gram-positive (g+, 10 genera) and 31 (42%) were gram-negative (g-, 5 genera). Retrograde contrast radiography of the distal portions of the intestinal tract in foals. A technique for retrograde contrast radiography of the distal portions of the intestinal tract of foals was developed and then performed in 25 foals (1 to 30 days old) with colic. Retrograde contrast radiography was shown to be sensitive (100%) and specific (100%) for evaluating obstruction of the small colon or transverse colon. Ependymoma of the neurohypophysis and hypernatremia in a horse. A 2-year-old Standardbred gelding was examined because of prolapse of the third eyelid; myoclonus of the muscles of the head, neck, and forelimbs; and persistent tail swishing. The horse had a high plasma sodium concentration but was not drinking water. [The abnormal white line and hollow wall in horses, a comparative mycological study]. There are few descriptions of an abnormal white line in the horse, and it is not known what causes this disorder. Thirty horses and ponies with this disorder were examined mycologically, as were 30 horses and ponies with normal hooves.
