Genetic analysis of equine rotavirus by RNA-RNA hybridization. Serotype G3 equine rotaviruses isolated in Japan made up a common genogroup and were classified into two different genotypes. Temperature and pH effects on the oxygen equilibrium curve of the thoroughbred horse. A new oxygen equilibrium curve is defined for the Thoroughbred horse under standard conditions of 37 degrees C, pH = 7.4 and PCO2 = 5.33 kPa. The "standard" P50 for the Thoroughbred is, at 2.83 +/- 0.04 (SE of mean) kPa, significantly lower than that found for the Hanoverian horse (3.17 +/- 0.03 kPa) by Clerbaux et al. (Can. J. Vet. African horsesickness: pathogenesis and immunity. African horsesickness (AHS) is a serious, non-contagious disease of horses and other solipeds caused by an arthropod-borne orbivirus of the family Reoviridae. The pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of procainamide in horses after intravenous administration. Six horses were administered either 15 or 20 mg/kg body weight (b.w.) procainamide (PA) as an intravenous (i.v.) dose over 10 min. The plasma concentrations of PA and N-acetylprocainamide (NAPA) as well as the pharmacodynamic effect (prolongation of the QT interval) were monitored. The PA plasma concentrations could be described by a one-compartment model with a t1/2 of 3.49 +/- 0.61 h. Primary splenic lymphoma in a horse. A well-demarcated solitary splenic mass (20 x 20 x 15 cm in size) containing hemorrhagic and necrotic foci was observed in a 4-year-old Thoroughbred stallion. Superior check ligament desmotomy for treatment of superficial digital flexor tendonitis in thoroughbred and standardbred horses. Bilateral superior check ligament desmotomy was performed on 31 Thoroughbred and 17 Standardbred horses as the sole method of treatment for superficial digital flexor tendonitis. Horses resumed racing between 6 and 19 months after surgery. Polymorphic sequence in the D-loop region of equine mitochondrial DNA. The D-loop regions in equine mitochondrial DNA were cloned from three thoroughbred horses by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The initial forelimb loading of a horse trotting at 3.7 ms-1 on a treadmill was studied by use of an instrumented shoe, accelerometers and high-speed cinematography. Diagnosis of African horsesickness. African horsesickness (AHS) is a very serious, non-contagious disease of horses and other solipeds caused by an arthropod-borne orbivirus of the family Reoviridae. The epizootic nature of the disease makes rapid, accurate diagnosis of AHS absolutely essential. Currently, diagnosis of AHS is based on typical clinical signs and lesions, a history consistent with vector transmission and confirmation by laboratory detection of virus and/or anti-AHS virus antibodies.
