Topic:Equine Health

Equine health encompasses the study and management of diseases, disorders, and overall well-being of horses. It involves understanding various physiological systems, preventive care, and treatment strategies to maintain optimal health in equine populations. Common areas of focus include nutrition, infectious diseases, orthopedic conditions, and reproductive health. Research in equine health aims to advance knowledge on diagnostic methods, therapeutic interventions, and management practices that improve horse welfare and performance. This page collects peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the diverse aspects of equine health, offering insights into current findings and advancements in the field.

Cardiovascular effects of amphetamine in the horse. Smetzer DL, Senta T, Hensel JD.Each of nine horses was treated with amphetamine alone, with atropine alone, and with amphetamine and atropine in combination. Cardiac effects of these drugs were studied by electrocardiography during resting and exercising states and immediately after exercise. Although each treatment increased heart rate significantly during the resting state, only the amphetamine plus atropine treatment increased heart rate significantly during exercise. Decrease in heart rate immediately after exercise differed significantly for each treatment; the most rapid decrease in heart rate was found after the amph...

Multiple hemangiosarcomas in the tarsal synovial sheath of a horse.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    July 1, 1972   Volume 161, Issue 1 49-52
Van Pelt RW, Langham RF, Gill HE.A 2-year-old Standardbred colt with a history of intermittent lameness of the left hindlimb had hemangiosarcomatous involvement of the tarsal synovial sheath. Tibiotarsal and proximal intertarsal synovial sacs were visibly distended and there was pronounced distension of the tarsal synovial sheath. A large, firm mass was palpable in the sheath at about the level of the tuber calcis. Three circumscribed sessile growths were surgically excised from the sheath. The growths were lobulated, moderately vascular, and of fibrotic consistency. Microscopically, the pattern of the hemangiosarcomas appear...
The autoxidation of horse hemoglobin: the effect of glutathione.
Biochimica et biophysica acta    June 26, 1972   Volume 273, Issue 1 30-39 doi: 10.1016/0304-4165(72)90188-2
Rifkind JM.The reduced glutathione in the erythrocyte was found to inhibit the autoxidation of purified horse hemoglobin. It was observed that much higher concentrations of oxidized glutathione also stabilize hemoglobin. The stabilization by oxidized glutathione most likely involves the formation of a mixed disulfide with the reactive β-93 sulfhydryl groups on the hemoglobin. A similar effect is also observed with N-ethyl- maleimide and HgCl2 which also react with the sulfhydryl groups. The apparent stabilization by reduced glutathione is partially due to the reduction of ferrihemoglobin formed by autox...
