Amino acid composition of casein isolated from the milks of different species.
Canadian journal of zoology    January 1, 1977   Volume 55, Issue 1 231-236 doi: 10.1139/z77-026
Lauer BH, Baker BE.Casein was isolated from the milks of the following species: cow, horse, pig, reindeer, caribou, moose, harp seal, musk-ox, polar bear, dall sheep, and fin whale. The caseins were subjected to acid hydrolysis, the resultant amino acids were converted to their n-butyl-N-trifluoroacetyl esters, and the amino acid composition of the caseins was determined by gas chromatographic analysis of these esters. Notable among the results was the close similarity, with respect to amino acid composition, of reindeer and caribou caseins. The results of the amino acid analyses of the other caseins are present...
Recent advances in equine reproduction.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1977   Volume 9, Issue 1 4-11 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1977.tb03960.x
Dawson FL.Mares rarely ovulate in winter; ovulation is induced by increase in daylight length. Ova accumulate in the oviducts of unserved mares. During pregnancy, corpora lutea accumulate; all regress together at mid pregnancy. Plasma progesterone levels rise and oestrogen levels fall towards the end of pregnancy. Methods are available for early termination of pregnancy and for induction of parturition. Pregnancy can be diagnosed efficiently by rectal examination, and by immunological assay of pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin. Service at the foal heat is associated with an increased prevalence of early...

A general survey of tumours in the horse.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1977   Volume 9, Issue 1 16-21 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1977.tb03964.x
Cotchin E.Published figures from veterinary schools indicate that tumours may account for about 1 to 3 per cent of surgical cases. In this paper an account is given of clinical and pathological aspects of the tumours that are most likely to be encountered in practice, either as visibly or palpably detectable masses of tissue, or as internal tumours responsible for clinical signs. Amongst the common and important tumours dealt with, the most prominent are "equine sarcoid", squamous-cell carcinoma (of eye region and of glans penis), granulosa-cell tumours and melanomas. Well over a hundred references prov...
Ataxia in a Welsh cob filly due to a venous malformation in the thoracic spinal cord.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1977   Volume 9, Issue 1 40-42 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1977.tb03974.x
Gilmour JS, Fraser JA.An 8-month old Welsh Cob filly had shown progressive ataxia of the hindquarters since about 3 months of age. Autopsy revealed a venous malformation resulting in malacia in the ninth thoracic segment of the spinal cord. It is proposed that the tissue destruction associated with this congenital lesion gave rise to the ataxia.

Carlson GP, Harrold DR.A highly significant correlation between the water content and protein concentration of equine serum and plasma samples was demonstrated over a wide range of concentrations. A close correlation was also observed between protein concentration as estimated by refractometry and as determined by the biuret procedure for equine serum and plasma samples.
Veterinary aspects of doping.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1977   Volume 9, Issue 1 27-28 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1977.tb03968.x
Clarke EG, Moss MS.Doping can improve or impair performance and can be done either deliberately or accidentally. Accidental doping to win is the offence which most concerns the veterinary surgeon. The distinction between legitimate therapy and assisting an unfit horse to win a race by giving it a drug is a fine one. General guidelines are presented for the veterinary surgeon in practice.

Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1977   Volume 9, Issue 1 22-26 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1977.tb03966.x
Meek DG, Dickinson EO.An illustrated approach to the medial aspect of the equine fetlock joint is described, whereby the collateral ligaments are transected. This approach is suggested as a possible technique for metatarsal or metacarpal bone fracture repair by retrograde pinning, arthrodesis of the fetlock joint and other joint and sesamoid bone surgery. The histological evidence of satisfactory healing is presented and the advantages and disadvantages are discussed.

Methods in enzymology    January 1, 1977   Volume 46 516-523 doi: 10.1016/s0076-6879(77)46062-2
Gopalakrishnan PV, Zimmerman UJ, Karush F.Affinity labeling studies with anticarbohydrate antibodies have been very limited. In earlier studies, diazoniumphenyl glycosides were employed as affinity labeling reagents for rabbit and equine anti-p-azophenyl-β-lactoside and p-azophenyl- β-galactoside antibodies. Although these antibodies were heterogeneous, it was possible to identify the labeled residues in the heavy or light chains since the modified residues had characteristic absorption spectra. With the discovery of bacterial cell walls of Streptococcus groups A and C induced antipolysaccharide antibodies of restricted heterogeneit...

Human lymphocyte subpopulations: rosette formation with sheep, human and horse red blood cells.
Immunological communications    January 1, 1977   Volume 6, Issue 5 455-471 doi: 10.3109/08820137709094145
Yu DT, Gale RP, Kacena A, Pearson CM.Rosette formation between human lymphocytes and horse red blood cells could be promoted by a low pH medium, overnight incubation and a temperature of 4 degrees C. The percent of sheep, horse and human rosette-forming cells in the peripheral blood were 71.7 +/- 1.8, 30.5 +/- 2.8 and 28.3 +/- 3.4 respectively. However, their percentages in thymuses were 97.1 +/- 1.1, 91.4 +/- 2.4 and 89.0 +/- 3.4. Using preparations of isolated subpopulations, it was observed that the horse and human red cell rosette-forming cells were probably also "early" sheep red cell rosette-forming cells. Rosette formation...
Comparative study of the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve.
American journal of veterinary research    January 1, 1977   Volume 38, Issue 1 37-49
Kitchell RL, Stromberg MW, Davis LH.Quantitative studies were made of cells in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve in the horse, dog, cat, pig, sheep, goat, and calf. This nucleus was larger in ruminants than in nonruminants. Some cells in all parts of the nucleus supplied visceral structures in the head, cervical, thoracic, and abdominal regions; however, a definite topographic localization did exist within the nucleus. Eighty percent of the cells which supplied the abdominal viscera were in the rostral and rostral-middle regions. The cells which supplied the thoracic viscera were distributed almost equally within the r...
The activity of some nucleolytic enzymes in semen and in the secretion of the male reproductive tract.
Andrologia    January 1, 1977   Volume 9, Issue 1 15-22 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0272.1977.tb01252.x
Mennella MR, Jones MR.The activity of 5'-nucleotidase (EC 1.3.5), cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase (EC 2.1.4.17), non-specific phosphodiesterase (EC 3.1.4.1) and ribonuclease (EC 1.7.7.16)has been investigated in the seminal plasma of whole semen and in the secretions of the seminal vesicle, prostate and epididymis of the bull, boar, ram, stallion, jackass, rabbit and man. Bull seminal plasma showed the highest activity for 5'-nucleotidase, cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase and ribonuclease; in contrast, stallion and jackass semen were very poor in these enzymes. Ram, rabbit and boar seminal plasma showed inte...
Proton-dependent dissociation equilibrium of hemoglobin. 1. A 700-nanometer light-scattering study on horse methemoglobin in the pH range 4.8 to 7.2.
Biochemistry    December 28, 1976   Volume 15, Issue 26 5693-5697 doi: 10.1021/bi00671a002
Schroeder E, Wollmer A, Kubicki J, Ohlenbusch HD.The effect of proton concentration upon the subunit dissociation of horse methemoglobin has been investigated at two ionic strengths by light scattering photometry at 700 nm. Differential refractometry revealed a slight but systematic decrease of the specific refractive index increment with decreasing protein concentration for solutions in dialytic equilibrium with the solvent. In the pH range 4.8-7.2 the dissociation can be described by a simple equilibrium between tetramers and dimers. The dissociation constant Kd of the met derivative is found to be very similar to those of the O2- and CO-l...

Pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin: ratio of follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone activities measured by radioreceptor assay.
The Journal of endocrinology    December 1, 1976   Volume 71, Issue 3 471-482 doi: 10.1677/joe.0.0710371
Stewart F, Allen WR, Moor RM.Specific radioreceptor assays for FSH and LH, which employ tissue receptors from rat testis and highly purified human FSH (LER 1575-C) and LH (Hartree IRC-2, 24/6/69) as standards, have been developed to determine the FSH-like and LH-like activities in pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG). Measurements of FSH and LH concentrations in the serum of six pregnant Pony mares showed that the ratio of these two activities did not vary significantly between mares and remained constant between days 40 and 80 of gestation with a value of 1-45 +/- 0-04 (S.E.M.). The FSH:LH ratio of PMSG produced by cu...
