A 3-month-old Quarter Horse colt sustained a penetrating injury over the coronary band on the right forelimb resulting in an articular bone sequestrum and septic arthritis of the distal interphalangeal joint. Equine goiter associated with excess dietary iodine. Naturally occurring goiter cases are described in 2 newborn Arabian foals whose mares were supplemented with excess iodine during the final 24 w of the pregnancy. Six nursing foals and 2 mares were also affected clinically with thyroid hypertrophy. At least 12 times the maximum tolerable level of iodine supplementation was given, as the daily iodine intake for each mare was 299 mg. The prevalence of goiter cases was 2 and 9% in the mares and foals, respectively.

[Idiopathic gastric rupture in a Friesian foal]. Acute idiopathic gastric rupture resulted in sudden death of a 4.5-months-old healthy Friesian foal. No morphological lesions were present which could explain the preceding gastric impaction. Pharmacokinetics of a high dose of amikacin administered at extended intervals to neonatal foals. Placental teratocarcinoma in a mare with possible metastasis to the foal. A teratocarcinoma was diagnosed in the amnion of a 5-year-old Arabian mare that delivered a healthy, full-term foal. The foal died at 2.5 months of age as a result of metastasis of an undifferentiated component of the mass. This case is unique because it is the first reported case of placental teratocarcinoma in animals and the malignant component apparently metastasized to the foal resulting in its death.

Retrospective analysis of 50 cases of guttural pouch tympany in foals.
