Analyze Diet

Topic:Glucose

Glucose is a simple sugar that serves as a primary energy source for horses. It is metabolized through various biochemical pathways to support cellular functions and overall energy requirements. In equine physiology, glucose levels are influenced by factors such as diet, exercise, and metabolic health. Monitoring glucose concentrations is important for understanding metabolic conditions, such as insulin resistance and equine metabolic syndrome, which can affect a horse's health and performance. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the regulation, metabolism, and clinical implications of glucose in equine health.
Clinical and clinicopathologic effects of large doses of raw linseed oil as compared to mineral oil in healthy horses.
Journal of veterinary internal medicine    February 12, 1998   Volume 11, Issue 5 296-299 doi: 10.1111/j.1939-1676.1997.tb00468.x
Schumacher J, DeGraves FJ, Spano JS.The clinical and clinicopathologic effects of raw linseed oil and mineral oil were compared. In a crossover experimental design trial, 6 horses were given either raw linseed oil (2.5 mL/kg body weight) or mineral oil (10 mL/kg body weight), twice, 12 hours apart. Two weeks later, the horses received the opposite treatment. All horses given mineral oil or linseed oil developed nonformed feces by 24 hours of the first administration of oil. Horses treated with mineral oil had formed feces at 48 hours; horses treated with linseed oil developed normally formed feces at 96 to 108 hours. All horses ...

Tierarztliche Praxis. Ausgabe G, Grosstiere/Nutztiere    February 6, 1998   Volume 25, Issue 6 594-597
Bostedt H, Hospes R, Herfen K.Basing on exact investigations of normal behaviour and abnormalities in newborn and up to 24 hours old foals a program for evaluation, comprehending exogeniously judgable criteria, was developed. It aims at a quick recognition of aberrations in behaviour. The program includes a score, which allows early diagnosis of even subtile abnormalities. As a result, a veterinary surgeon should be consulted if the score exposes a critical situation, so that therapy can be started in time. Furthermore informations about investigations on blood-glucose- and immunoglobulin-G-concentration in relation to neo...
Systemic and colonic venous plasma biochemical alterations in horses during low-flow ischemia and reperfusion of the large colon. Moore RM, Muir WW, Rush BR.The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of low-flow ischemia and reperfusion (I-R) of the large colon on 16 systemic venous (SV) and colonic venous (CV) plasma biochemical variables in horses. Horses (n = 24) were randomly allocated to 3 groups: sham-operated (n = 6), 6 h ischemia (n = 9), and 3 h ischemia followed by 3 h reperfusion (n = 9). SV and CV heparinized blood was collected at 0, 1, 3, 3.25, 4, and 6 h. The SV-CV difference was calculated for each variable. The SV, CV, and SV-CV difference for albumin, total protein, and calcium decreased significantly (P < 0.05) ac...

Mills PC, Ng JC, Kramer H, Auer DE.Five clinically healthy Thoroughbred geldings were injected with Freund's adjuvant 3 times to induce a chronic inflammatory response. Blood was collected at various times before and after adjuvant administration. Clinical responses (rectal temperature and general demeanor) were also monitored. Adjuvant injection induced increases in rectal temperature and plasma fibrinogen concentration (maximum levels measured were mean +/- s.d. 39.7 +/- 0.5 degrees C and 8.2 +/- 0.3 g/l, respectively), indicative of an inflammatory response. A mild clinical depression was also observed in the horses for 24 h...
Transient glucose malabsorption in two horses–fact or artefact?
Australian veterinary journal    December 24, 1997   Volume 75, Issue 10 716-718 doi: 10.1111/j.1751-0813.1997.tb12251.x
Church S, Middleton DJ.Two horses, presented for investigation of chronic weight loss despite normal to increased feed intake, had flat oral glucose absorption curves, suggesting malabsorption. The cause of the apparent malabsorption was not evident grossly or on light microscopic examination of the intestinal tract. Both horses survived long term and at follow-up examination had regained weight and their capacity to absorb glucose. These cases illustrate that flat glucose absorption curves may occur in horses with no obvious intestinal lesions, that they may revert to normal and that the results of these tests shou...

Carbonic anhydrase activity in different placenta types: a comparative study of pig, horse, cow, mink, rat, and human.
Microscopy research and technique    July 1, 1997   Volume 38, Issue 1-2 115-124 doi: 10.1002/(SICI)1097-0029(19970701/15)38:1/2<115::AID-JEMT12>3.0.CO;2-S
Ridderstråle Y, Persson E, Dantzer V, Leiser R.The placenta has multiple functions, being the organ which provides oxygen and nutrients to the developing conceptus. In the placenta, the enzyme carbonic anhydrase (CA) may provide ions for exchange with Na+, K+, and Cl- in transepithelial movement of ions and fluid, as well as facilitating carbon dioxide diffusion. It can also be active in intermediary metabolism, such as gluconeogenesis, urea, and fatty acid synthesis. Placental material from pig, horse, cow, mink, rat, and human was therefore investigated, representing placenta types with variations in shape, internal architecture, and nat...

At 0800 on d 7, mares receiving the restricted diet were switched back to the control diet. Relative to control mares, mares switched to the restricted diet had reduced plasma ...
[Kidney function tests in horses–methods and reference values in healthy animals].
DTW. Deutsche tierarztliche Wochenschrift    April 1, 1996   Volume 103, Issue 4 117-122
Bickhardt K, Deegen E, Espelage W.Investigations of renal function have been done on the basis of renal clearance (Clr) and excretion (E) of endogenous creatinine in healthy horses of different body weight (23 female, 7 male). Creatinine was measured by enzymatic PAP-method. Creatinine-E of female horses was poor positively correlated with body weight. The creatinine-Clr was highly correlated with the inulin-Clr (r = 0,896, p < 0,001). The excretion of creatinine was 35% higher than the filtration of creatinine, determined by inulin-Clr. That demonstrate a tubular net secretion of 26% of the total creatinine excretion. Howe...

Equine veterinary journal    March 1, 1996   Volume 28, Issue 2 146-156 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1996.tb01607.x
West HJ.In horses with hepatic necrosis, lipidosis, neoplasia and cirrhosis, progression of the disease was studied by serial measurements of total serum bile acid concentrations and of plasma glutamate dehydrogenase (GD) and gamma glutamyl transferase (gamma GT) and by liver biopsy. Plasma ammonia concentrations were significantly elevated compared to clinically normal horses, but such changes were not always accompanied by a decline in plasma urea concentration. A fall in plasma glucose concentration carried a guarded prognosis. These were all invaluable aids in early diagnosis and throughout the di...
