In the normal motion of the mitral valve there is anterior motion noted during atrial systole. In 3 horses with atrial fibrillation the mitral valve motion had no anterior motion to correspond with atrial contractions. Quinidine returned the electrocardiogram of one horse to a sinus rhythm after which echocardiography demonstrated the reappearance of the anterior motion of the mitral valve.

These structures were grossly and histologically similar to complete subaortic stenotic rings, being composed of variably dense interlacing bands and sheets of fibrous connective tissue. van Nie CJ, van der Kamp JS.A case of tricuspid atresia in a premature foal associated with large atrial septal and ventricular septal defects is reported. This anomaly is compared with other cases in horses as reported in the literature. As tricuspid atresia in horses is usually not diagnosed so that relatively few cases have been reported, a classification similar to that of human anomalies is not possible. It is suggested that the present malformation is due to abnormal development of the atrioventricular canal. The factors involved in the pathogenesis of this abnormal development are obscure.

A basket retrieval catheter was introduced into the jugular vein and manipulated under fluoroscopic guidance to remove the fragment from the right side of the heart. Percutaneous retrieval should be considered as an alternative to thoracotomy for retrieval of intracardiac or intravascular foreign bodies.

Brown CM, Holmes JR.In horses experimental right and left heart catheterization using a catheter with two microtransducers 9 cm apart, usually in a transvalval position produced pressure and sound artifacts that confounded the diagnosis. Most were probably due to malpositioning resulting in movement through a valve during recording or impingement on the valve cusps or the chordae tendineae or lodgement in the apex of the heart. The recognition of these artifacts is particularly important in studies of large animals in which catheter siting cannot be monitored by radiography.
