Topic:Horse Breeds

Horse breeds represent the diverse genetic and phenotypic variations found within the species Equus ferus caballus. These breeds are categorized based on characteristics such as size, conformation, coat color, and temperament, which have been selectively bred over centuries to fulfill specific roles and functions. Common classifications of horse breeds include light horses, draft horses, and ponies, each serving different purposes ranging from riding and racing to work and companionship. This page aggregates peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the genetics, history, and functional attributes of various horse breeds, as well as their impact on equine management and breeding practices.

Significance of affinity and cooperativity in oxygen binding to hemoglobin of horse fetal and maternal blood.
Zoological science    October 28, 2003   Volume 20, Issue 9 1087-1093 doi: 10.2108/zsj.20.1087
Zhang Y, Kobayashi K, Sasagawa K, Imai K, Kobayashi M.The physiological significance of the position and shape of the oxygen equilibrium curve (OEC) of horse hemoglobin (Hb) is considered from the viewpoint of oxygen (O2) transport efficiency and the effectiveness of the Bohr effect. In horse fetal and maternal bloods, their physiological O2 affinities are nearly optimized with respect to the effectiveness of the Bohr shift occurring at the O2 release site, when it is measured by the change in O2 saturation per unit change in P50. With relatively low cooperativity (n=2.69) of horse Hb under physiological conditions, the effectiveness of the Bohr ...
The variations of white blood cell count in Lipizzan horses.
Journal of veterinary medicine. A, Physiology, pathology, clinical medicine    October 22, 2003   Volume 50, Issue 5 251-253 doi: 10.1046/j.1439-0442.2003.00539.x
Cebulj-Kadunc N, Kosec M, Cestniki V.Total and differential leucocyte counts (lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils) were measured in 140 stallions, 101 mares and 25 foals of Lipizzan breed. The values fell in the normal ranges for warm-blooded horses. Differences between mares and stallions were not significant with the exception of foals, having higher white blood cell, neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte and basophil values in females than in males. Foals exhibited an age-related increase of total leucocyte count during the first 4 months of life, accompanied by a decrease in neutrophil and increase in ly...

Microsatellite variation in Japanese and Asian horses and their phylogenetic relationship using a European horse outgroup.
The Journal of heredity    October 15, 2003   Volume 94, Issue 5 374-380 doi: 10.1093/jhered/esg079
Tozaki T, Takezaki N, Hasegawa T, Ishida N, Kurosawa M, Tomita M, Saitou N, Mukoyama H.The genetic relationships of seven Japanese and four mainland-Asian horse populations, as well as two European horse populations, were estimated using data for 20 microsatellite loci. Mongolian horses showed the highest average heterozygosities (0.75-0.77) in all populations. Phylogenetic analysis showed the existence of three distinct clusters supported by high bootstrap values: the European cluster (Anglo-Arab and thoroughbreds), the Hokkaido-Kiso cluster, and the Mongolian cluster. The relationships of these clusters were consistent with their geographical distributions. Basing our assumpti...
Evaluations of testicular biopsy by tru-cut in the stallion.
Veterinary research communications    October 11, 2003   Volume 27 Suppl 1 211-213 doi: 10.1023/b:verc.0000014142.20416.80
Carluccio A, Zedda MT, Schiaffino GM, Pirino S, Pau S.Testicular biopsy is one of the supplementary examinations performed in the course of andrological testing. In veterinary medicine, it is seldom used in low-fertility or sterility testing, or in the investigation of suspected cancer. Biopsies are discouraged in horses in particular, since they may result in testicular sclerosis and atrophy (Galina, 1971; Smith, 1974; Marusi and Corradi, 1989; Varner, 1991; Del Vento et al., 1992; Threlfall and Lopate, 1993; Roser, 2000). In humans (Foresta and Varotto, 1992; Foresta et al., 1992; Kessaris et al., 1995; Harrington et al., 1996) good resul...
Equine hepatic disease: the effect of patient- and case-specific variables on risk and prognosis.
Equine veterinary journal    October 1, 2003   Volume 35, Issue 6 549-552 doi: 10.2746/042516403775467207
Smith MR, Stevens KB, Durham AE, Marr CM.Liver disease is fairly common in horses and, although previous literature suggests that fatality rates are high, impressions gained from current clinical practice suggest that this is no longer the case. Objective: A case-control study was undertaken in 2 hospitals to investigate whether age, gender or breed type predisposed horses to developing hepatic disease, with the additional aim of determining whether these factors and disease category had any effect on outcome. Methods: Eighty-eight cases were identified by review of computerised archives at 2 hospitals. Three cases admitted immediate...
Fetal development of the segment-specific papillary body in the equine hoof.
Journal of morphology    October 1, 2003   Volume 258, Issue 2 207-224 doi: 10.1002/jmor.10142
Bragulla H.Fetal development of the unique papillary body and its localized peculiarities in the equine hoof are described based on the study of 51 fetuses, nine newborn foals, and five adult horses. The shape and dimensions of the dermal papillae and lamellae have a formative influence on the structure and physical quality of the corneous hoof capsule with its horn tubules and lamellae. The size and arrangement of these horn structures determine the mechanical quality of hoof horn. Proper horn quality is a prerequisite for the various functions of the hoof capsule, such as protecting the living dermis s...
Male, female and management risk factors for non-return to service in Dutch mares.
Preventive veterinary medicine    October 1, 2003   Volume 61, Issue 1 17-26 doi: 10.1016/s0167-5877(03)00128-4
van Buiten A, Westers P, Colenbrander B.The "effect" of stallion, mare and management-related factors on the odds of pregnancy per cycle in the horse were identified and quantified from the breeding records of Dutch Warmblood (n=4491), Friesian (n=1467) and Shetland-pony mares (n=3267) mated either naturally or by artificial insemination to one of the 88 stallions between 1992 and 1996. A mare was considered to be pregnant when she did not return to oestrous within 28 days of the last insemination. For Dutch Warmblood horses, the percentage of mares that did not return for service within 28 days (NR28) varied between studfarms and r...
Equine athletes, the equine athlete’s heart and racing success.
Experimental physiology    September 5, 2003   Volume 88, Issue 5 659-663 doi: 10.1113/eph8802615
Young LE.Our recent data have confirmed that maximum oxygen delivery in racing Thoroughbreds is positively correlated to left ventricular mass measured by echocardiography. A similar, but weaker relationship also exists between left ventricular mass and Timeform performance rating in commercial racehorses. The relationship of the Thoroughbred heart to racing success and the special problems that selective breeding for aerobic capacity have had in this species are reviewed in this article.
A pH-dependent aquomet-to-hemichrome transition in crystalline horse methemoglobin.
Biochemistry    August 27, 2003   Volume 42, Issue 34 10113-10125 doi: 10.1021/bi030059t
Robinson VL, Smith BB, Arnone A.In 1947, Perutz and co-workers reported that crystalline horse methemoglobin undergoes a large lattice transition as the pH is decreased from 7.1 to 5.4. We have determined the pH 7.1 and 5.4 crystal structures of horse methemoglobin at 1.6 and 2.1 A resolution, respectively, and find that this lattice transition involves a 23 A translation of adjacent hemoglobin tetramers as well as changes in alpha heme ligation and the tertiary structure of the alpha subunits. Specifically, when the pH is lowered from 7.1 to 5.4, the Fe(3+) alpha heme groups (but not the beta heme groups) are converted from...
Effect of capacitation of stallion sperm with polyvinylalcohol or bovine serum albumin on penetration of bovine zona-free or partially zona-removed equine oocytes.
Journal of animal science    August 21, 2003   Volume 81, Issue 8 2080-2087 doi: 10.2527/2003.8182080x
Choi YH, Landim-Alvarenga FC, Seidel GE, Squires EL.Experiments were conducted to study effects of macromolecules on stallion sperm capacitation and fertilization as determined by penetration of bovine zona-free and equine partially zona-removed oocytes. Stallion sperm were capacitated in TYH medium (modified Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate) supplemented with either 1 mg/mL of polyvinylalcohol (PVA) or 4 mg/mL of BSA. Capacitation was induced with 8 bromoadenosine cyclic monophosphate (8BrcAMP; 0.5 mM) alone or in combination with 0.1 microM of ionomycin. Intraspecies gametes were co-incubated in TYH/PVA or TYH/BSA for 18 to 20 h. For zona-free bovine...

Biochimica et biophysica acta    August 21, 2003   Volume 1622, Issue 3 161-168 doi: 10.1016/s0304-4165(03)00138-7
Dean MF, Lee YW, Dastjerdi AM, Lees P.The basal rate of in vitro proteoglycan (PG) synthesis in explants of equine articular cartilage was subject to considerable variation in animals of the same age but was greater in younger than older animals. Synthesis of PGs in explant cultures was stimulated by a synthetic link peptide, identical in sequence to the N-terminus of the link protein (LP) of PG aggregates, in a similar manner to that demonstrated previously for human articular cartilage [Biochem. Soc. Trans. 25 (1997) 427; Arthritis Rheum. 41 (1998) 157]. Stimulation occurred in tissue from animals ranging from 1 to 30 years old ...

Effects of in vitro production on horse embryo morphology, cytoskeletal characteristics, and blastocyst capsule formation.
Biology of reproduction    August 6, 2003   Volume 69, Issue 6 1895-1906 doi: 10.1095/biolreprod.103.018515
Tremoleda JL, Stout TA, Lagutina I, Lazzari G, Bevers MM, Colenbrander B, Galli C.Blastocyst formation rates during horse embryo in vitro production (IVP) are disappointing, and embryos that blastulate in culture fail to produce the characteristic and vital glycoprotein capsule. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of IVP on horse embryo development and capsule formation. IVP embryos were produced by intracytoplasmic sperm injection of in vitro matured oocytes and either culture in synthetic oviduct fluid (SOF) or temporary transfer to the oviduct of a ewe. Control embryos were flushed from the uterus of mares 6-9 days after ovulation. Embryo morphology was eval...

Journal of veterinary medicine. A, Physiology, pathology, clinical medicine    July 31, 2003   Volume 50, Issue 6 280-285 doi: 10.1046/j.1439-0442.2003.00543.x
Villegas-Castagnasso EE, Díaz S, Giovambattista G, Dulout FN, Peral-García P.The second exon of equine leucocyte antigen (ELA)-DQB genes was amplified from genomic DNA of 32 Argentine Creole horses by PCR. Amplified DNA was analysed by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and PCR-single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP). The PCR-RFLP analysis revealed two HaeIII patterns, four RsaI patterns, five MspI patterns and two HinfI patterns. EcoRI showed no variation in the analysed sample. Additional patterns that did not account for known exon 2 DNA sequences were observed, suggesting the existence of novel ELA-DQB alleles. PCR-SSCP analysis exhibited se...

Equine veterinary journal    July 26, 2003   Volume 35, Issue 4 350-353 doi: 10.2746/042516403776014262
Spike-Pierce DL, Bramlage LR.Proximal sesamoiditis has been a common and confusing radiographic diagnosis in Thoroughbred yearling surveys. This study categorised the radiographic appearance of yearling proximal sesamoid bones and determined their effect on the number of races started and earning potential for racing at ages 2 and 3 years. Objective: Yearlings with moderate to severe proximal sesamoiditis have decreased performance at age 2 and 3 years. Methods: Survey radiographs of 487 Thoroughbred yearlings were reviewed. Proximal sesamoid bones were examined and findings placed into 7 categories, 5 of which measured s...
The effects of maternal age and parity on placental and fetal development in the mare.
Equine veterinary journal    July 24, 2003   Volume 35, Issue 5 476-483 doi: 10.2746/042516403775600550
Wilsher S, Allen WR.The normality of equine placentation is essential for fetal health and development. Substantial information exists on the gross morphological status of the placenta but few studies have addressed the problem of degenerative lesions that interfere with placental morphology and placental efficiency. Objective: Degenerative changes in the endometrium with increasing age and parity are reflected in the morphology and density of the placental microcotyledons. Objective: To assess placental efficiency on the basis of foal birthweight as a function of total microscopic area of fetomaternal contact. M...
Pregnancy outcome in mares following insemination deep in the uterine horn with low numbers of sperm selected by glass wool/Sephadex filtration, Percoll separation or absolute number.
Animal reproduction science    July 11, 2003   Volume 79, Issue 1-2 103-109 doi: 10.1016/s0378-4320(03)00086-1
Nie GJ, Johnson KE, Wenzel JG.Mares were inseminated deep in the uterine horn with 25 million sperm selected by glass wool/Sephadex (GWS) filtration, Percoll separation (PS) or absolute number (AN). Deep-horn insemination using a low-volume, smooth tipped, flexible pipette/catheter delivery system allowed more efficient use of stallion sperm and reduced post-breeding uterine reaction in mares. Mares were pregnant in 15/30, 13/30 and 10/30 cycles for GWS, PS and AN selection methods, respectively. Sperm selection method did not effect pregnancy outcome (P=0.422). However, sperm selected for deep-horn insemination by filtrat...
Contribution to the history of the horse domestication and breeding in the Ukraine.
Historia medicinae veterinariae    July 4, 2003   Volume 28, Issue 2 41-46
Rudik SK.The Ukraine is one of the centers of domestication of animals. Many archaeological excavations and chronicles evidence this. The wild horse tarpan was domesticated in Ukraine. There were huge herds of tarpans lived in Ukraine. Tarpans were distinguished for their speed, quality of their hooves (it was very important for the shoeless horses). The last tarpan mare was killed at Ukrainian territory at 1898. In contradistinction to the Eq. Prezewalskii the tarpan was the direct ancestor of the European domesticated horse breeds.
Genetic polymorphism of the serum proteins of horses in Jeju.
Journal of veterinary science    June 24, 2003   Volume 3, Issue 4 255-263
Shin JA, Yang YH, Kim HS, Yun YM, Lee KK.The study was carried out to investigate the genetic polymorphism of the serum proteins of horses in Cheju. They were assigned to three groups; 45 Cheju native horses(CNH), 60 Cheju racing horses(CRH) and 60 Thoroughbreds(TB). We analyzed the phenotypes and gene frequencies of serum proteins which were albumin (Alb), vitamin-D binding protein(GC), esterase (ES), A1B glycoprotein(A1B) and transferrin(TF) loci using horizontal polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (HPAGE). All of the loci, except A1B in TB, showed polymorphisms and different allelic and phenotypic frequencies in all three groups. E...
Molecular cloning of equine muscle-type phosphofructokinase cDNA.
The Journal of veterinary medical science    June 17, 2003   Volume 65, Issue 5 645-648 doi: 10.1292/jvms.65.645
Sato T, Itou T, Sakai T.The complete coding region sequence of equine muscle-type phosphofructokinase (ePFKM) was obtained from skeletal muscle of a thoroughbred horse. The deduced amino acid sequence of ePFKM showed 97%, 96%, 96%, 96% and 95% identity to canine, human, mouse, rabbit and rat PFKM, respectively. The amino and carboxyl terminal halves of ePFKM presented a structure of tandem repeat, as other mammalian PFKMs. As the amino acid residues constituting various ligand-binding sites were also conserved, it is thought that ePFKM has enzymatic activity similar to PFKM in other mammals.
