Friis NF, Bech J.Döhle bodies were observed in a horse suffering from a chronic pleurisy. The bodies were demonstrated in about 80 % of the neutro-phils in blood smears prepared during an acute flare-up of the disease. One to 4 bodies were found in each cell, situated in the periphery of the cytoplasm. The size of the bodies was 1–3 μ and the shape rodlike or oval. They stained blue with M-G-G. Blood smears were examined from 50 horses suffering from various diseases, but Döhle bodies could not be demonstrated in any of these cases. Döhle-Körperchen wurden bei einem Pferd mit chronischer Pleuritis beoba...
Irfan M.Studies have been made on the effect of storage and temperature on factor V in animals and a method for its assay is described. There was a decrease of the factor with age in oxalated plasma of cattle, horses, sheep, dogs, rabbits and one elephant. This deterioration was very rapid in plasma kept at 37C. as compared with that stored at 4C. Rabbit plasma had the highest concentration of factor V followed by dogs, horses, cattle and sheep. Mixing various dilutions of aged plasma kept at 4C. wlth fresh plasma would enable the percentage prothrombin activity to be determined for the assay of facto...
Schauvliege S, Gozalo Marcilla M, Duchateau L, Martens A, Vlaminck L, Pille F, Declercq J, Levet T, Gasthuys F.No studies have been reported on the effects of enoximone in anaesthetised colic horses. Objective: To examine whether enoximone improves cardiovascular function and reduces dobutamine requirement in anaesthetised colic horses. Methods: Forty-eight mature colic horses were enrolled in this prospective, randomised clinical trial. After sedation (xylazine 0.7 mg/kg bwt) and induction (midazolam 0.06 mg/kg bwt, ketamine 2.2 mg/kg bwt), anaesthesia was maintained with isoflurane in oxygen and a lidocaine constant rate infusion (15 mg/kg bwt, 2 mg/kg/h). Horses were ventilated (PaCO2 < 8.00 kPa)...
Evans TJ, Ganjam VK, Miller MA, Niswender KD, Krause WJ, Youngquist RS.Endometrial periglandular fibrosis (EPF) has been proposed as a possible aetiology for equine embryonic and fetal loss. However, the pathophysiology of EPF is not well understood. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) is found in macrophages, endothelium (during angiogenesis) and myofibroblasts at sites of fibrosis in the heart, kidneys, liver and skin in several species. An increase in local tissue ACE-binding activity appears to be a critical event in the initiation and progression of fibrosis in these tissues. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between ACE activity in th...
Luther DG, Cox HU, Dimopoullos GT.Fatty acid composition of erythrocytes of healthy horses was determined. Three fatty acids (C16:0, C18:0, and C18:1) were found in approximately equal quantities and comprised 72.17% of the total. Nine other fatty acids were found in small amounts. Saturated fatty acids constituted 67.2% of the total. Marked variation was demonstrated in the occurrence and distribution of fatty acids in the sterol ester, triglyceride, phospholipid, and free fatty acid fractions.

Gerard M, Pruitt A, Thrall DE.An aged pony with extensive paranasal sinus and nasal passage B-cell lymphoma was treated with palliative radiation therapy. Sixteen gray were administered in two fractions, 7 days apart. A lateral field was used for the first fraction and a dorsal field for the second. Because of tumor being present in the left frontal sinus, gross tumor was knowingly excluded from the treated volume in the lateral field. The tumor regressed within 2 months and the pony remained free of clinical disease for 2.5 years. Acute, temporary blindness developed shortly after the second radiation fraction, but a dire...
Guseĭnov TS.The investigation was performed on 35 corpses of men, 8 corpses of cats, 7--of pigs and 5--of horses. The following methods were used: polychrome injection of arteries, veins, lymph capillaries and vessels, macro-microdissection, staining after van Gieson and with hematoxylin-eosin, impregnation with 0,25--1% solution of silver nitrate, dehydration and clearing, calculation of thickness of loops per 1 mm2 and their depth by means of ocular micrometer. The lymphatic bed of the serous membrane was established to be better developed in representatives of carnivora (cats) and omnivora (pigs), than...

Jensen H, Mikkelsen R, Paulsen ET.Therapeutic riding for somatic disabled has been established as one of the treatment modalities at Beitostølen Health Sports Centre ever since it opened in 1970. The accumulated experience indicates positive effects of the treatment, on empirical grounds, but there is a need of further evaluation and controlled studies. The authors briefly review the principle of the treatment and present the results of a study on the level of pain in patients with Bechterew's disease before and after treatment.
Roth TL, White KL, Thompson DL, Barry BE, Capehart JS, Colborn DR, Rabb MH.In this experiment we have identified and partially characterized the immunosuppressive activity of preimplantation horse conceptus-conditioned medium (HCCM). Horse conceptuses were nonsurgically flushed from mares at Days 9-10 (n = 6), 15-16 (n = 3), and 25-26 (n = 3). After incubating the conceptuses for 24 h in RPMI-1640 supplemented with 15% fetal calf serum (FCS) and 1% penicillin/streptomycin, HCCM was obtained from cultures and tested for immunosuppressive activity in lymphocyte proliferation assays. Peripheral blood lymphocytes obtained from randomly selected mares were stimulated with...
Azimpour S, Emami Alagha H, Faghihi H, Rajaei SM, Shokoohimand A.The purpose of this study was to determine the effects and potential side effects of topical preservative-free (PF) tafluprost 0.0015% in ophthalmologically normal horses. Methods: Five adult grade horses. Methods: One of the eyes of each horse was randomly chosen as the "treatment" eye, and consequently, the contralateral eye served as the "control." A single dose of PF tafluprost 0.0015% (0.2 mL) was instilled in the treated eye of each horse. Intraocular pressure (IOP), Schirmer's tear test (STT) levels of each eye, and an ophthalmic examination were performed at T0 (baseline), T30, T120, ...
Morris DD, Henry MM, Moore JN, Fischer K.In laboratory animals, the incorporation of alpha linolenic acid or other n-3 series fatty acids into the diet results in marked changes in cell membrane composition as well as arachidonic acid metabolism. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether endotoxin-induced thromboxane A2 (TxA2) and/or prostacyclin (PGI2) production by equine peritoneal macrophages was altered by feeding horses a diet containing 8% linseed oil as a source of alpha linolenic acid for 8 weeks. Peritoneal macrophages were cultured in vitro in the presence of endotoxin (LPS) (0.5-500 ng/ml) or calcium ionop...
Burba DJ, Collier MA, Debault LE, Walls RC.An in vivo biopsy technique was developed to harvest cylindrical osteochondral core samples (2 mm diameter x 2 mm depth) from the articular surfaces of radial carpal bones in adult horses for use in osteoarthritis drug kinetic studies. A 25 degree arthroscope was introduced into the midcarpal joint through the dorsolateral surface, and a custom-built motorized core drill was introduced through the dorsomedial surface to create the osteochondral core samples. A total of 24 core samples were sequentially harvested in vivo, and 16 at postmortem, from eight horses on four different occasions withi...
Midon M, Yamada DI, Zangirolami Filho D, Natalini CC, Escobar A, Clark-Price SC.This randomized double-blinded study evaluated the recovery from isoflurane anesthesia in horses receiving doxapram and xylazine. 6 horses were anesthetized 4 times (minimum of 2-week washout period). Anesthesia was performed with xylazine (0.6 mg/kg), ketamine (2.2 mg/kg), midazolam (0.1 mg/kg), and maintained with isoflurane for 90 minutes. At recovery, horses received one of the following randomized treatments: RX: xylazine (0.2 mg/kg), RXD1: xylazine (0.2 mg/kg) and doxapram (0.1 mg/kg), RXD2: xylazine (0.2 mg/kg) and doxapram (0.2 mg/kg), or RS: saline. Recoveries were rope-assisted and e...
