Topic:In Vivo

In vivo studies involving horses refer to research conducted within living organisms to understand various biological processes, disease mechanisms, and therapeutic interventions in equine species. These studies provide insights into the physiological and pathological responses of horses under natural conditions. In vivo research encompasses a range of investigations, including pharmacokinetics, disease modeling, and the evaluation of treatment efficacy. It often involves the use of controlled environments to simulate real-life scenarios while observing the effects of specific variables on equine health. This page gathers peer-reviewed research articles and scholarly studies that explore the methodologies, findings, and implications of in vivo research in horses, contributing to the advancement of equine science and veterinary medicine.

Veterinary pathology    November 1, 1984   Volume 21, Issue 6 574-581 doi: 10.1177/030098588402100605
Sabnis SG, Gunson DE, Antonovych TT.Seven horses ranging from three to 15 years of age had nephrotic syndrome; at necropsy, renal tissue of all seven horses had the morphologic lesions of mesangioproliferative glomerulonephritis (membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis). Homogeneous eosinophilic material which filled the glomerular capillary lumina was found in five horses. Ultrastructurally, this material primarily consisted of electron-dense deposits with a fibrillar pattern in five horses and in one horse, rhomboid crystalline deposits which resembled deposits seen in human cryoglobulinemia. The association of mesangioprolif...
Experimental cantharidiasis in the horse.
American journal of veterinary research    November 1, 1984   Volume 45, Issue 11 2261-2266
Shawley RV, Rolf LL.Crystalline cantharidin in an alfalfa cake or in aqueous suspension was given to 8 horses at a dosage level of 450 to 489 micrograms/kg of body weight (group 1) and 2 horses at a dosage level of 720 micrograms/kg (group 2) via nasogastric tube. Both group 2 horses and 1 group 1 horse died. Horses were evaluated at 6-hour intervals for 36 hours and then again at postcantharidin hours 48. Data evaluation consisted of a comparison of the nonsurvival and survival data to one another and their respective base-line values at each sampling period, irrespective of the route of administration and dosag...
Inhibited development of cyathostominae in the horse in the early third stage.
Research in veterinary science    November 1, 1984   Volume 37, Issue 3 355-356
Eysker M, Jansen J, Mirck MH.Inhibited early third stage larvae of Cyathostominae were found in the digested mucosa of the large intestine of 12 yearling, female Shetland ponies, which were used in two grazing experiments. The ponies were killed in late autumn. In some ponies the inhibited larvae were very abundant and in most animals the majority of the Cyathostominae populations consisted of these early third stage larvae, suggesting that the phenomenon has an epidemiological significance.
Serial investigations of early pregnancy in pony mares using real time ultrasound scanning.
Equine veterinary journal    November 1, 1984   Volume 16, Issue 6 509-514 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1984.tb02002.x
Allen WE, Goddard PJ.The uteri of 13 pony mares were examined daily by ultrasound during the first two months of gestation. The conceptus was first identified between 12 and 16 days after ovulation and the embryo was seen on the ventral surface of the conceptus after Day 21. The foetal heart could be visualised after Day 22 and spontaneous movement of the foetus occurred after Day 39. No consistent pattern was seen in the development of the foetal membranes, although attachment of the umbilical cord to the allantochorion was always on the dorsal aspect of the conceptus. Daily measurements were made of the diameter...

Plasma samples were assayed for 4-AP over a frequent sampling schedule for 8 hours after IV administration. The plasma 4-AP vs time data best fit a 2-compartment pharmacokinetic model. Distribution half-life was 7.4 minutes, elimination half-life was 259 minutes, volume of the central compartment was 0.89 L/kg, volume of distribution (area) was 1.98 L/kg, volu...
Angiography of the corpus cavernosum penis in the pony stallion during erection and quiescence.
American journal of veterinary research    July 1, 1984   Volume 45, Issue 7 1464-1468
Bartels JE, Beckett SD, Brown BG.Serial arteriography was used to determine the vascular pattern and blood flow in the penis of the pony stallion. Ponies were anesthetized with pentobarbital sodium, and catheters were surgically introduced into the internal pudendal and obturator arteries. The vascular anatomy was visualized by angiography via image-intensified fluoroscopy and was recorded on 70-mm film at 3 frames/s or by direct radiography. Blood flow into the corpus cavernosum penis (CCP) was limited during quiescence because the blood was immediately shunted into the venous system. After vasodilation with mild stimulation...
Effect of flunixin meglumine on prostacyclin accumulation in the equine eye.
American journal of veterinary research    July 1, 1984   Volume 45, Issue 7 1383-1385
Cooley PL, Milvae R, Riis RC, Laratta LJ.A study was performed to identify prostacyclin (PGI2) in equine aqueous humor, demonstrate an increase in PGI2 following anterior chamber paracentesis, and determine the effects of subconjunctival injection of flunixin meglumine on PGI2 accumulation. Twenty ponies were found to be normal upon ocular examination and were placed under general anesthesia. Anterior chamber paracentesis was performed in both eyes (right and left); immediately afterward, 25 mg of flunixin meglumine was injected (subconjunctivally) in the left eye. Aqueous paracentesis was performed 1.5 hours later (both eyes). Aqueo...
Experimental medication of equine ringworm due to Trichophyton equinum var. autotrophicum.
Australian veterinary journal    July 1, 1984   Volume 61, Issue 7 231-235 doi: 10.1111/j.1751-0813.1984.tb05997.x
Pascoe RR.Twelve medicaments were tested for their efficacy in the treatment of Trichophyton equinum var. autotrophicum; povidone iodine, thiabendazole ointment, captan ointment and Burroughs Wellcome Ringworm Ointment gave satisfactory results but their usefulness may be limited for treatment of large numbers of horses. Aqueous washes containing 0.5% hexetidine or 0.3% chloramine-T did not prevent fungi being isolated from lesions for up to 7 days after treatment. Similarly neither etisazole nor thiabendazole suspension prevented fungi from being isolated from lesions for up to 15 days after treatment....
