One sheep died 15 h after attack, and the survivors developed skin necrosis on the sting sites. Pathological evaluation revealed necrosis in the dermis, degeneration of the tubular epithelial cells, and multifocal hemorrhages in heart and spleen. The most consistent gross and microscopic lesions were icterus and interstitial nephritis, respectively. Diagnoses were based on visualization of compatible spirochetes in Warthin-Starry-stained sections of kidney, liver, and placenta. Confirmation by immunofluorescence was made in 2 cases.

The abscesses caused colic in the horses by producing an extraluminal obstruction that led to fecal impaction. The abscesses were diagnosed by rectal palpation and aspiration of exudate from the masses and were drained surgically. In horses in which the abscess involved abdominal organs, peritonitis developed.
