Neuromelanin in the substantia nigra of adult horses. The structure and histochemical properties of neuromelanin in the Substantia nigra of the horse were studied by light and electron microscopy. Astrocytes in the guinea pig, horse, and monkey retina: their occurrence coincides with the presence of blood vessels. In the present study the distribution of astrocytes in the nerve fiber layer (NFL) has been studied in the sparsely vascularized retinae of the guinea pig and horse and in the richly vascularized retina of the Old World monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops) using immunocytochemical methods. Comparative topography of the immunoreactive alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone neuronal systems in the brains of horses and rats. The present study describes and compares the topography of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH)-immunoreactive neurons in the forebrain of rats and horses. Two groups of immunoreactive cells were present in both species. These groups were distinguished by their cross-immunoreactivity and topography. Ataxia due to lymphosarcoma in a young horse. A 20-month-old, Standard-bred colt was presented with an acute onset of hindlimb ataxia. Clinical and radiographic examination identified a compressive lesion affecting the spinal cord at the level of the 17th to 18th thoracic vertebrae. After euthanasia, post-mortem examination revealed a tumour in the epidural space, diagnosed histologically as a lymphosarcoma. The intraneural course of nerve fibres in the equine recurrent laryngeal nerve was investigated by partially ligating the nerve at a proximal site, and 3-8 weeks later, tracing the course and spatial relationships of intact and degenerating fibres along the distal stump. Retinal astrocytes: their restriction to vascularized parts of the mammalian retina. The distribution of astrocytes has been studied in whole-mounted horse and monkey retinae by the immunocytochemical localization of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). In the horse, astrocytes were found to be restricted to a narrow zone close to the optic nerve head. This is also the only region of the horse retina that is vascularized. Auditory brain stem response testing in anesthetized horses. Auditory brain stem response testing, using insert earphones, was performed in 10 healthy horses given general anesthesia. The procedure involved clicks of alternating polarity delivered at a rate of 25 clicks/s. Wave forms, including five peaks, were commonly identified. Latencies were measured in milliseconds for waves I through V for all intensities. Latencies of all waves decreased as stimulus intensity increased. [Functional characteristics and distribution of neuromuscular spindles]. The mm. lumbricales and the mm. capsulares of the shoulder and hip joints of the horse are rich in neuromuscular spindles (NMS). The mm. interossei of the pig, but not of the horse, have NMS too. In the m. orbicularis of the eye, m.hyo-epiglotticus and the m. palatinus of the horse NMS are absent. In the vestigial muscles, as m. extensor digitorum brevis and m. of Thiernesse, NMS are absent too. A role of modulator for the proximal muscles of the limbs by the distal muscles is hypothesized, as well as the absence of NMS in striated muscles not involved in locomotion.
Experimental crush of the equine recurrent laryngeal nerve: a study of normal and aberrant reinnervation. Experimental reinnervation of the equine larynx in healthy ponies was studied after the recurrent laryngeal nerve was crushed, using endoscopic, electromyographic, and microscopic techniques. Use of an ELISA in the differential diagnosis of cauda equina neuritis and other equine neuropathies. In 27 potential neuropathies an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, using P2 preparations from either bovine or equine myelin, detected all cases of cauda equina neuritis in which there was caudal involvement. The test was of limited value in differentiating neuropathies involving only cranial or other peripheral nerves.
Meningocerebral hemangiomatosis resembling Sturge-Weber disease in a horse. A 3-year-old horse presented with intermittent generalized seizures of 2-month duration. During interictal periods, the horse appeared normal and a cause for the seizures could not be identified. Necropsy revealed opacity of the leptomeninges, covering most of one cerebral hemisphere along with thinning and collapse of the cortex in the ipsilateral pyriform lobe. Subclinical entrapment neuropathy of the equine suprascapular nerve. This study confirmed that neurogenic muscle pathology exists in intrinsic laryngeal muscles supplied by the recurrent laryngeal nerves in horses subclinically and clinically affected with laryngeal hemiplegia. Hindlimb hyperesthesia associated with rabies in two horses. Rabies was diagnosed in 2 adult Quarter Horses with hindlimb hyperesthesia and progressive weakness. Microscopic examination of the cord and brain of the first horse revealed nonsuppurative meningomyelitis and ganglioneuritis in the cord extending cranially to the 6th cervical segment. Four cases of traumatic optic nerve blindness in the horse. Traumatic optic nerve atrophy is characterised clinically by a unilateral or bilateral sudden onset of blindness. Dilated, fixed pupils and a lack of a menace reflex are the only abnormalities noted soon after the trauma. Within three to four weeks the optic disc becomes paler and the retinal vasculature is markedly decreased. The pathological lesion is a rupture of the nerve axons from stretching forces produced by the posterior movement of the brain against the fixed canalicular portion of the optic nerves. Cross-sectional area of the aditus laryngis and rima glottidis before and after transection of the left recurrent laryngeal nerve in the horse. Localization of tones by horses: use of binaural cues and the role of the superior olivary complex. The ability of horses to use binaural time and intensity difference cues to localize sound was assessed in free-field localization tests by using pure tones. The animals were required to discriminate the locus of a single tone pip ranging in frequency from 250 Hz to 25 kHz emitted by loudspeakers located 30 degrees to the left and right of the animals' midline (60 degrees total separation). Thoracic limb digital extensor denervation in young horses. Low radial neurectomy in the left thoracic limb was performed in 4 mixed-breed weanling horses, with subsequent paralysis of the lateral and common digital extensor muscles. Weight bearing of the denervated and control limbs was discouraged by the use of special shoeing. Clinical signs of flexural deformity were not induced in the horses.
Macroscopic organization and sensitive innervation of the tendinous intersection and the lacertus fibrosus of the biceps brachii muscle in the ass and horse. The most developed and organized lamina running trough the biceps brachii muscle belly forms a well-marked tendinous intersection connecting the proximal tendon with the distal one. Moreover, the lacertus fibrosus arises from this lamina close to the distal tendon and blends with the fascia of the forearm and joins the extensor carpi radialis muscle. Paralysis and lipofuscin-like pigmentation of farm stock caused by the plant, Trachyandra laxa var. laxa. A paralytic condition of farm stock in South West Africa, characterized by prominent neuronal and some mild extraneuronal pigmentation, is described. The distribution of the pigment, which was mainly located in the larger neurones of the brain and spinal cord, is given. Experimental evidence, obtained by feeding the plant, is presented that the condition is caused by Trachyandra laxa var. laxa. The histochemical features of the pigment proved to be compatible with a lipofuscin.
Scapular notch resection for suprascapular nerve decompression in 12 horses. Supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscle paralysis with atrophy was treated by partial osteotomy of the scapula, deep to the suprascapular nerve. The horses had various gait abnormalities, which were corrected by the surgery, but regeneration of the muscles varied from partial to complete, depending on the duration of the condition and the degree of atrophy before surgery.
A surgical approach to treatment of suprascapular nerve injury in the horse. Suprascapular nerve decompression has proven to be a useful treatment for refractory neuropraxia in horses. The surgical procedure used to effect that decompression is described. The surgery can be undertaken when conservative treatment has failed, but the sooner the surgery is done, the more likely the muscle mass is to be cosmetically satisfactory.
